At club level?
Kayln Ponga and i don't think it's close.

Barely plays, when he does, phones it in half the time. Is the captain of the club and one of the worst on field leaders i've ever seen. He's treated like he's the guy the knights have to build around and he's doing all he can but needs more help. The reality is he's one of the biggest problems at that club. Too talented to give up on but has shown no reason to believe he's a player worth building around at club level

f**king brilliant Origin player though!

Gutherson, Ponga or Milford. You can't list someone like Mbye or Brooks in here because nobody has ever rated them, they just somehow keep on getting gigs.

I think Adam Douhei comes in with a big f**king shout. I cannot for the life of me see what some people see in him. Yet, some Souths and Tiger fans seem to think he is the messiah. Horrible defender, pretty slow on his feet and just average in attack. Im hoping we don't extend him.

Reminds me of Connor Watson.

Looks actively involved but isn't good enough to play any position at a first grade level.

I absolutely agree.....at best, he is a utility back. Not good enough for fullback as he has the turning circle of the QE2 and does not have the speed or ballplaying ability. Not good enough for centre as he is too weak defensively....lacks pace too. 6 is probably his best shot in first grade but once again, is just too slow.

I actively dislike the term utility.

Unless a player can actively play a position at first grade level they shouldn't be carried on the bench as insurance.

A mobile tacklebot second rower IMO makes more sense and can defend in the halves or centres.

If a half goes down injured a shit benchie isn't going to win the game.

When Souths bring on Nikorima does anyone think they actually get better as a team?

The point of a utility is that they can actively play multiple positions at a first grade level.

How many are active at club level in the NRL presently?

Brandon Smith is the only one I can think of and he mostly starts.

I was worried all season that at some some point Salmon and Kenny would be needed by PENTITH early in a game for injured backrowers.

I don't think there are many decent pure utility players in rugby league.....especially a utility back. No way on Earth would I pick Douhei on a bench....he either starts or plays reserve grade.

But, there is room for a good utility to play rugby league.....there are just not many true good ones about. A backs type utility could force one of the starting backs to have a stint in the forwards. But, Im with you in that I'd rarely have a utility unless that utility can do a job at dummy half or make a lot of tackles.

I rate Connor Watson as a decent utility. He can play dummy half well and is deceptively tough and can make a lot of tackles. Watson can fill in a lot of positions....he even played lock at Newcastle last year and was pretty decent at it.

Craig Wing and John Plath were also excellent utilities. Wing is probably the best utility I've ever seen....deadly at dummy half but also a dangerous runner in many other positions. John Plath may well be the most versatile player that I've ever seen. Master at no positions....but could bloody fill in anywhere at a moment's notice and do a serviceable job. He often did hooking duties when no injuries were around.

Wing or one of the most underrated players in history Shaun Berrigan.
Luke Lewis was also pretty special
