Your Personal Scariest Films List

I just finished watching "28 Weeks Later', and we had an interesting discussion. The lads reckoned it was the scariest movie they'd ever seen, and I neither agreed nor disagreed. Being a fan of psychological horror and subscribing to the adage that "it's not what you see, but how it's set up", I prefer slowly-built up tension, as opposed to loud guts and gore (however, I did enjoy this film).

But when the time came to nominate my own top list of scariest films I'd ever seen, I couldn't think of too many. So, what are yours?

Here are some of mine:

* "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" - it's subject matter really struck me, and the way the story was told stays with me to this day

* "The Shining" - the version directed by Stanley Kubrick with Jack Nicholson in the lead...need I say more?

* "The Exorcist" - not a novel addition, but the subject matter and the way it was all dealt with makes it chilling in my eyes

* "Psycho" - in my eyes, it was brilliant; slow-boiled tension at its finest

* "Ringu" (the Japanese version of "The Ring") - if you've seen the American version but haven't seen this, I highly recommend it; the Japanese are into a less showy but more psychologicall intense sort of horror, and this creeped me out.

Whitenoise- I know it isn't that scary but some parts scared me, and to think this is what alot of people do. Every time i see static i listen for words or if i can see a vague image.

The Grudge- Not really scary, but it's more that f**king noise that i hate!

Those are all excellent films you've listed (well, maybe not the Exorcism of Emily Rose), but for some reason they just don't do it for me in terms of scariness. Maybe I've just been desensitised to human violence to the point where the only thing that'll bother me is a pack of blood belching zombies?

My list:

#1: 28 Days Later - saw it in a practically empty theatre with a few mates when it first came out and I can say that the first half of the film was easily the most frightening hour I've spent in a cinema.

#2: Deliverance - some wanker who I'll never forgive suggested that I see this film when I was 15. I didn't sleep for what seemed like a week after watching it.

#3: Alien - another film I haven't seen since I was a kid. People have told me that after a 2nd viewing the movie doesn't seem as scary as they remember it, but I still recall the great feeling of terror that can only be felt while watching a horror classic.

#4: 28 Weeks Later - Not as good a movie as the original, but the pacing was superb, and the infected are just as disturbing as I remember them.

I haven't seen many of these movies but - Salems Lot, The Omen, The Excorcist, Haloween & The Amityville Horror (all the originals not remakes) are the ones I remember best :)

JAWS was a pretty " SCARY " movie at the time. I kept hearing that darn music in my head for years after that, when was out in the surf.

I know i'll get bagged out for this, but we went and saw Blair Witch and we hadnt heard too much about it - wether it was a doco or not. Then that night we were staying at our mates place who lives on a farm. We all got smashed - and started freaking out at stuff.

Not exactly the movie that was scary - be we were all off our chops and freaking out in the bush in the pitch black night!

Good times!!

Ring 2 (Japanese Version) The way that woman moves and that whole mist on ocean thing.

IT: Hate clowns. Someone showed me that film when I was 9

Also a sidenote. Not a film. But apparantly my family sat down to watch the debut of Michael Jacksons Thriller full length clip. Apparantly I lasted all of a minute and ran and closed myself in a cupboard. Children can be perceptive it seems

I agree with "The Exorsicm of Emily Rose". There is one scene in particular that is fuggen scary. When she takes that guy back to her dorm, they go to sleep, he wakes up...ARGH...

Don't wanna spoil it for people who haven't seen it...

That's exactly the scene that freaked me out!

Also all the talk about 3AM...Particularly because a couple of weeks after watching the film, I had a mild attack due to sleep apnea. Basically, because my brain got little oxygen, my brain woke up but my body didn't - so I'm trying to move my limbs and stuff and nothing's happening. After the film goes on about some of the demonic stuff they said...

But yeah - it was just sleep apnea.

"Deliverance" is fantastic.

I also want to add - if nobody's seen them - "Black Christmas" (the original, not the 2006 remake); "The Wicker Man"; "A Tale Of Two Sisters" (it's a Korean film; highly recommended); "Lost Highway" (directed and written by the guy who directed and wrote "Twin Peaks"...I forgot his name...Lynch).

Oh - this film is creepy because of its graphic nature and not so much because of the slow-boiled tension or whatever, but...

"Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer". Some of the scenes in it...

And a great, slow-boiled movie is, in my eyes, "The Amityville Horror" (the original version).
