Sharks want the Bird

By ADRIAN PROSENKO - SMH | Sunday, 02 December 2007

Kangaroos five-eighth Greg Bird is on the verge of signing a seven-figure deal that will keep him at the Sharks for the rest of his career.
Bird is one of several key players the club is in the process of re-signing before it shifts its focus to luring internationals Jarryd Hayne, Krisnan Inu and Israel Folau.
Bird is already contracted for another two seasons but is negotiating to extend his stay until 2012 - a massive five-year deal that will make him a millionaire.
"I like the area and haven't made any plans to go elsewhere," Bird told The Sun-Herald. "I'm not staying just because I love the town and I love the team, I want to win a comp and I really think we've got the potential to do it.
"It would be awesome. I reckon they'd knock the bridge down if it happened, that's really my main goal.
"After the representative season I had I was looking to secure a couple [more] years and I was pretty happy with the team.
"I really think there's some young blokes coming through, and if we can keep the squad we've got now for a few years, under the experience of Ricky Stuart's coaching, we're definitely a top-four team."
Sharks boss Tony Zappia confirmed talks were well under way, with an official announcement expected before Christmas.
"He's a player the club wants to keep long term," Zappia said. "We've met and hopefully we can come to some sort of agreement.
"He's been at the Sharks now for six or seven years and has earned Australian and Origin honours."
The Sharks are also in negotiations to stitch up their most promising prospects.
Prop Luke Douglas, on the fringe of higher honours after gaining selection in the Prime Minster's XIII match against PNG, is in negotiations to extend his contract beyond next season. Officials have opened talks with centre Ben Pomeroy and forward Jacob Selmes.
NSW lock Paul Gallen recently signed on until 2011.
Zappia, a former Eels footballer manager, said retention was his top priority but the focus would then shift to luring Hayne and Inu from Parramatta. Storm sensation Folau is another star on his hit-list.
"They're good players, obviously, but it becomes a matter of whether you can or can't do it," Zappia said.
"We'll have to see what's available in the cap once we've retained the blokes we want to retain."

At least they are trying to retain players, then have a go at poaching. Scum clubs (eg. Souths and Easts) do the opposite which really does suck...

it seems every club is targeting those 3 young guns.. then again if you have the money available under the cap to sign them you would be crazy not to try everything you could to secure their signatures

Pity... I think we can afford to lose one of the two. Tautai looks like he may be a decent centre who could fill the gap. Struggling for depth after that though.

With all the offers those two are getting, I don't see how we could retain both of them.
Maybe Inu should have gone on his Mormon mission afterall. Out of sight, out of mind and all that.

the one thing that ticks me off about the salary cap increase is that when it was being negotiated all the talk was that it was so clubs could retain there players. now it seems the extra cash is being used to poach star players. it's a joke.

seriously, if anyone thinks that it's fair that a club can lose star players this early in their career they are kidding themselves. i'm not saying we will lose inu and hayne but we should be rewarded for putting in the $$$ to develop players like that through our junior ranks. ditto for someone like falau or cameron smith if they ever get poached from melbourne after they came through their feeder system.

So Parramattas gonna refund the $$$ back to the Sharks after developing Raftery?

Dude, get with the times. The good guys dont win anymore.

Taniwha, I think there is a fair bit of difference in your comments.

Inu and Hayne have played first grade and are internationals, Raftery was not offered a full tme deal at Cronulla and is part of our second ter squad and don't beleve we "pinched him.

The 2 boys that are Parra juniors, have had their school fees paid, have had numerous upgrades and have been nursed through the grades at the club, if you were to be fair that is a huge difference.

To lose the guys after 1 maybe 2 effective seasons shows you that there are problems when yopu can't retain the players you have invested in. The clubs such as those on our Eastern seaboard are just bloodsucking pariahs that should do more in their own ranks

My thoughts on this matter, have been known to be wrong (not this time, though).

Being a sharkie i still hope they both stay where they belong and that is with the eels for the next contract at least.
I hate seeing clubs develope young players then lose them it really sucks.
Maybe a transfer fee might discourage some of this say 50k fully payable to the club they leave for a international, just a thought.

If you're comfortable, then that sounds like good news...

being comfortable doesn't mean that they'll sign on the dotted line you can never give that guarentee, however I'm very comfortable that it's heading to the right direction.

if we lose both these guys i don't see why Parra should throw money at developing juniors

let someone else do it and then poach them

that would soon f**k the NRL and send them a message
