That's really f**ked up. It's not even debatable. It'll be lost in some of the bigger ticket issues sadly but there's absolutely no good reason for dropping the ban and it can only do harm

USA Wildlife Conservation something something are spinning the line that sports hunting is good for the survival of the species. Daddy's Xmas present for the boys it seems.

Look, hunting can actually perform a valuable role in certain situations despite what activists say. But not elephants. They are incredibly long lived and slow maturing animals and trophy hunters will be taking the big dominant bulls for their tusks...it's just asking for an extinction

Predators tend to get over hunted, which f**ks the entire ecosystem.

Predators are less important in a terrestrial ecosystem than a marine one because their density is so low relative to the biomass of the system as a whole, and they generally repopulate quickly. Especially in Africa. Lions are extinct in Gambia, but leopards and hyenas have filled the void.

What tends to get over hunted are trophy species. Often that includes predators (lions, bears etc) but also includes animals you can physically take a reminder of, like a tusk or an antler rack. Elephants are incredibly vulnerable to over hunting because they live so long, which means they are slow to reach maturity and very slow to repopulate. Add that most of the hunters are looking for the big mature bulls, and you've got a genetic issue as well once you take the strong survivors out of the pool. It's just a ridiculous decision to lift a ban on elephant trophies in a country where hunting is so rabidly supported by so many
