Cronulla are hopeful they can welcome Daniel Mortimer back for the 2018 season.

While the 28-year-old left the Sharks mid-year for a move to the Super League, Leigh have been relegated which made Mortimer a free agent.

The hooker half has since been offered a one-year-deal to re-join the Sharks.

The Centurions, however, are still hopeful of holding onto the former Eel, Rooster and Titan.

The Sharks expect to have Mortimer’s decision by the end of the week.

The possible return of Mortimer works well for the Dragons.

The Sharks were zeroing in on Penrith No.7 Darren Nicholls as their back-up playmaker but with Mortimer a chance to return, Nicholls will wear the Red V next season.

Coming off a breakout season in the ISP NSW competition, Nicholls will play understudy to Gareth Widdop and Ben Hunt.

From that same article:

"TITANS SNARE YOUNG SHARK

The Gold Coast are on the verge of snaring one of Cronulla’s most talented NYC players, Tony Mata’utia.

The centre-backrower, who is not related to the four Mata’utia brothers plying their trade for the Knights, is close to inking a two-year-deal.

Mata’utia was part of the Sharks’ victorious SG Ball team in 2015 before moving into the 20s.

At 105 kilos, the 20-year-old has represented and captained the NZ Maori."

NO to Mortimer from me. Not a fan. Even tho he singlehandedly won us that game last season.. think it might of been against Raiders can't recall. Just think he is below first grade par and would rather an up and comer than a fringer.

Frenzy.

The “poaching” of juniors.

Let’s remember there is no NYC next year. These guys are next to no chance of breaking into the Sharks NRL squad. That’s a dud option for mine.

They have to go somewhere so it’s obvious most will leave. If they are NRL quality surely Morris knows this and reports to the football people and those will be kept

Rarely to footy people see the same as fans. Probably because footy people have access to assessing other things like motivation, attitude, personal issues, what makes them tick, leadership potential etc etc

Not worth getting in a tizz about

Good points.

We just need to trust in the people that know that we keep the ones really worth keeping.

We no doubt will lose ones we want to keep but it’s not as though we haven’t poached a good junior ourselves before.

Moyza? Keep dreaming.

You were half a chance of Signing Nicholls, but it appears that he's going to St Merge unfortunately.

I thought Nicholls might have been a pretty good fit for the Sharkies.
