Complaints about the defense in a NYC game.

A few things to remember

1. Defense is about attitude and these are young kids playing.
2. The large majority of them never make first grade and for those that do another high percentage won't last very long - probably because of reason number 1.
3. NYC isn't supposed to be a reserve grade replacement
4. The only difference between jnr defense 5-6 years ago and jnr defense today is that it's televised for all to see (and whinge about). Yet at NRL level defense is just as good.

Enjoy it for what it is - from the couch.
But it's been elevated in priority well over the reserve grade competitions, and I dont think this bodes well development or for first grade sides.

Look at St George Illawarra, couldnt sort their shit out and get a reserve grade side going so they had players playing park footy when not in first grade, at the end of the season when it was fiansl in Carlton League had no one to call on. There's f**k all coverage of NSW Cup and little acknowledgement of the competition and IMO this isnt good for rugby league.

Not to mention players get discarded at twenty when they can easily peak later, especially forwards. Twenties is a terrible breeding ground for forwards, they just steamroll kids and does little for development. Interesting that Souths had George Burgess playing in NSW Cup despite being eligible for the 20's, believing this was a better development path.

20's have been very good for the Warriors, Cowboys and Storm. Those who use it properly benefit more.

Absolutely this is a big issue, but it's an issue created by those running the game rather than the kids playing. As a result of that the general public sees it more as a reserve grade comp and criticise it on that basis.

 The NYC and Q Cup work well together for those clubs aligned with a Q Cup side. That the NSW Cup is shit and/or clubs use it wrongly is not the NYC's fault.

Just about every team is doing that so whats your point ?

Only those with learning disabilities think the NYC is a development league. Well it is to small degree, mostly its a talent identification comp i.e. to see what players clubs should continue to sink money into.

Yep. Raiders and Tigers have faired ok too, and the Broncos production line just keeps on pumping, but they use the Q Cup well as well.

Stop dressing it up as something its not and you wont be disappointed with its results.

It was always going to be the case for those teams imo. Before the start of the first NYC mself and quite a few other Warrior fans thought it would be the best thing for the club.

Not just because of the way the players could develop but previously Warriors fringe players would often be spread out amongst local teams which didn't give them the opportunity to play together, learn each others game and create a team atmosphere.

Cowboys/Storm would've been in similar situations I imagine.

Aye, but the clubs I've listed have REALLY benefited from it. Before, Cows had problems enticing kids to stay up north since there was little opportunity. But now thanks to an U16's and U18's as well as the NYC the kids have something to do.

Same goes for the Warriors, Storm and their local juniors.

KTF knows what I'm on about.

First 20 minutes will be massive for the Cowboys. Have to stay close or get in front.

The big thing about the Warriors is the size of their outside backs and their bench. The've often started slow but usually come over the top when the forwards are all tired but those extra forwards they disguise as backs keep hitting it up.

Yeah it's pretty much scout identifying.
Talent can't be taught, but defence can be.
