I would not say the WA Reds are a shoe-in. The NRL may want to shore the stronghold of league before introducing new areas.

Have the Melbourne Storm brought many new fans to the game. Very questionable and the Storm have a huge debt. Can the NRL afford to carry another club?

WA Reds like the other bids will have to prove they can afford a team, have juniors in place, home crowd support (not depend on a travelling home crowd over 200 - 300 kms to games), a stadium, marketing value and sponsorship.

Would not be surprised CC Bears and a SEQLD team 2013, with the WA Reds to serve their time in a "hopeful new reserve grade" competition.

We bring a whole new audience in the most affluent city in Australia. We bring new fans, new national exposure, new jnrs, new TV slots, new market for NRL clubs sponsors. We basically bring things that no other bid can offer. We have the stadium, we have the fanbase, we have the potential. We lack major $ backers at this point.

To suggest Melbourne bring nothing when they are the most watched pay TV RL club in the country and brought 900k viewers to a GF is a bit of a joke and very ignorant of why News continue to invest in the Storm! Melbourne have no debt.

If the ARLC go for two more heartland clubs then RL deserves everything it gets in the future in terms of falling behind AFL as far as I am concerned.

Speaking of, any talk of a roof being put over NIB? I think it desperately needs one.

The new stand (there is apparently still some debate about if it will be East or West that is replaced) will be covered. That will give (presuming East stand is repalced) undercover seating for approx 12,000 East stand, undercover standing in the shed for around 2,000 and undercover ltd in the West for around 1,000. I would love to see the Shed extended the full length of the sNorth stand, wouldn't be too expensive and would give more undercover options and create a cracking English style atmosphere from that end. Still awaiting some more up to date artist impressions but something like this:

Where do you get this "nervous" crap from? I'm simply correcting your statement. I wasn't referring to TV eyes or anything else. And besides, apart from the WA Reds who I agree WILL bring in more eyes than anyone else because they bring in a whole new state on the other side of Australia into the NRL, it's very debatable if the other bids would bring more than the Bears as the same arguement could be said for the Queenslanders watching the Broncos, Titans, Cowboys.

And of course you are talking about the Bears - we weren't born yesterday... they are the only bidders from NSW, so any passing anti-Sydney or anti-NSW comment is of course in reference to the Bears.

You sound like the nervous one peddling the "too many Sydney teams" arguement in relation to the Bears for the 500 millionth time.

If you think the Bears would bring a bigger TV contract than a QLD team you're dreaming. Let's ask the networks. I would be willing to accept what they say.

I am not begrudging a WA Reds bid but will the media show their games "late" at night on the free TV channels like Victoria. Will the local media give them not much coverage at all like VIC. I know a few people in Perth and they are league followers but they know nothing about the Reds bid due to the low media coverage... Hardly any Victorian's know the difference between League and Union after 10 years. Supporters who do not have the chance to watch League live or a a decent time would of switched already to Fox to view games.

I am going only what I am been told by a person in the know - the NRL wants to shore up the strong hold first - NSW and QLD.

So far only two bids have their act together to a degree - one depends on a travelling home crowd over 200 - 300 kms and hopes to have a stadium in place but depends on elections results and money; and the other one depends on converting AFL fans and having players moving a long distance. Two other bids are trying to get their act together and the last one has been informed its bid superior than all the others due to its strong points.

Can Melbourne survive on its own without the millions of dollars poured in by News Ltd. I stand corrected the Storm made a profit but it depends on the News Ltd support.

The CC Bears bring new fans and old fans back, already has jnrs, brings in a new NSW regional team, and a new market for NRL clubs sponsors. The CC Bears has the stadium, has the fanbase, already have the potential. Have major $ backers already and probably more to come..

End of the day CC Bears and WA Reds in the NRL 2013. Bring in another QLD team when they have their act together in 2018.

TBH I find it hard to believe you could be a RL in Perth and not know about the bid. There has been plenty of articles in the West Australian and Sunday Times over the last 3 years, TV adverts, radio coverage, promotion at Perth NRL games, a WA Reds website linked to the WARL website, jnrs in the SG Ball from most WARL clubs, discussion of the bid on NRL footy shows, a Facebook group, stickers on cars, etc etc. How exactly could you not know there is a bid if you a RL fan living in Perth?

I feel sorry for North Sydney supporters to a degree, but did the bears not have as much opportunity as the other merged clubs to figure out a suitable partner and negotiate it to work ? I hope that one day should another side anywhere near Sydney falls over, that the bears and the CC bid are granted their license.

But the supporters of the CC bid on this forum are bordering on embarrassing themselves with their one eyed slanted dribble. Folks, do yourselves a favour and keep it real. Your credibility and support will suffer if you don't.

Who cares which bid is in front right now or whose bid is put together a little later. When the decision is to be made, thats when it counts.

To put another team in that region is crazy in my view, and I hope both Perth and any Qld bid make themselves impossible to ignore when the time comes.

Oink !

Brisbane poised for second NRL team as Broncos' stranglehold on rugby league market faces challenge

THE Broncos' 23-year stranglehold on the Brisbane rugby league market is under threat. A rival consortium is secretly formulating plans to become Queensland's fourth NRL team. The Courier-Mail can reveal a three-man consortium, including Thoroughbreds chairman Craig Davison, has begun due diligence into the formation of a second Brisbane team that would compete with the Broncos for the city's sponsorship and supporter base.
"We're dubbing it the Battle for Brisbane," Davison said last night.
The consortium's push for NRL inclusion is the most significant challenge to the Broncos' flagship status since the birth of the South Queensland Crushers in 1995.

The Crushers suffered a quick death in 1997 amid the Super League bloodletting but NRL boss David Gallop said yesterday Brisbane's population could easily sustain a second team.
The Brisbane NRL bid team has been investigating options since Christmas.

It is separate to the NRL bids from Ipswich and Central Queensland, which has been the most vocal in the race to become Queensland's fourth team.
The Brisbane NRL consortium, which hopes to clinch a licence to play in the 2013 season, will formally announce its bid as early as tomorrow.
Davison confirmed his involvement in the new entity amid speculation the Thoroughbreds, the high-powered businessmen who provide mentoring to Broncos players, are reviewing their ties to the club.
"If and when the Independent Commission takes tenders for NRL expansion, we'll be in there fighting for that spot in Brisbane," he said.
"We're talking to a number of sponsors and they are excited about coming on board.
"We've spoken to David Gallop. He is very much aware of our plans.
"I was invited by the other guys around Christmas.
"There's been a couple of months of planning in private and I've had to decide if I want to be on board.
"I've told the Broncos I'll be doing it. I believe we've got a strong bid."
Brisbane's second team would play at Suncorp Stadium on alternate weekends to the Broncos, giving the city a weekly NRL event.
The consortium has designed an NRL bid logo and is negotiating to establish headquarters in Brisbane's south.
Gallop yesterday confirmed he had spoken to a Brisbane bid delegate.
He said he saw merit in the proposal.
"I've spoken to (the bid team) and agreed to meet with them in the next couple of weeks," Gallop said.
"There are a group of businessmen interested in an alternate bid to the Ipswich bid.
"We have said all along we would look seriously at expansion in 2011.
"With the strength of the game in Queensland it is pretty easy to see the merit of another team in Brisbane at some stage."

Former Broncos' backer seeks to get second Brisbane NRL team

Ambitious ... plans for a second Brisbane team are advanced.

A PROMINENT member of the Thoroughbreds group of Queensland businessmen is the central figure behind a bid to establish a second NRL team in Brisbane, which would be expected to target Wayne Bennett as the coach.
Craig Davison - chairman of the Thoroughbreds last year, a powerful syndicate that has sponsored and financially supported Broncos players over a long period of time - told the Herald that secret plans to apply for a licence to establish a team south of Brisbane were well advanced.
Davison, who recently resigned as chairman, and two other Thoroughbreds, John Geaney and Tony Scanlon, collectively own 25 per cent of the Broncos, and will speak to a Sydney consortium that is seeking to buy the shares.
Advertisement: Story continues below
''Battle for Brisbane'' is the theme of the new logo, as the new bid team gathers support to establish a second club in the Queensland heartland in 2013 and challenge the Broncos, the most successful rugby league club of the past 20 years.
The Thoroughbreds have been stripped of much of their power by former Broncos chief executive, Bruno Cullen, in response to complaints by official sponsors of the club that the group was taking too much focus away from them.
Davison, who is a great admirer of St George Illawarra grand final-winning coach Bennett told the former Broncos premiership coach of his plans before Christmas, and would hope the legendary figure would eventually join the new club.
Nicholas Livermore, a marketing consultant and son of QRL chief executive Ross Livermore, is another member of the bid team, along with Brisbane businessman Bill Rae.
Livermore's company, Corporate Sports Management Australia, has the FOGs, the group of Former Origin Greats who wore the Maroon jumper, as clients.
The team would play at Suncorp stadium and has already gained sponsorship commitments.
A recent meeting of NRL chief executives voted against a second Brisbane licence but the growing power of the Broncos concerns many clubs.
''If a second Brisbane club threatens to cut the Broncos back to size, the NRL chief executives will change their minds,'' one prominent coach said.
Channel Nine, frustrated by having only three Queensland-based clubs to broadcast (Broncos, Titans and Cowboys), would support a fourth team, increasing its options of games to select for its second Friday night televised match.
Davison, who owns a major Brisbane outdoor furniture business, said he approached the Broncos last week and told them of his plans, which were formalised last September.
''I informed the Broncos last week, and they were quite good about it,'' he said. ''They will always be No.2 with me but this new team looks good, and planning is well advanced. It will have strong sponsorship backing.''
He insisted Geaney, who owns 10 per cent of the Broncos and Scanlon, who holds 11 per cent, are not part of the new syndicate.
''No current Thoroughbreds other than me are involved,'' Davison said. ''Myself, Scanlon and Geaney have our Broncos shares on the market but that has nothing to do with it. The Sydney-based party which is looking to buy our equity of 24.7 per cent will meet with us next week but it has nothing to do with the new team. Our shares were put on the market some time ago.''
Geaney told the Herald the three had an agreement that if one sold his Broncos shares, the other two needed to agree. ''I will continue to support the Broncos and put my money into helping indigenous kids,'' Geaney said.
The three minority owners approached News Ltd, which holds 67 per cent of Broncos shares, about buying their equity but were told the media giant was not interested. News Ltd, which also owns the Storm, has a 1997 commitment to reduce its ownership of NRL clubs to one.
Scanlon, who is negotiating with the Sydney party keen to buy their Broncos shares, has been told the group has no relationship with News Ltd.

Finally a QLD bid talking about using suncorp as their home ground!

TBH I was getting sick of hearing about the options of Ipswich & sunshine coast when you have such an amazing stadium right there in the heart of brisbane.

maybe , just maybe sanity will prevail.

Central coast Bears might be a tad worried aswell.

No matter how good anyone else's bid is this is something that cannot be matched.

Nope not at all. Our bid gets submitted in 64 days. We've got the neccessary funds and equity to have our best possible bid. The community support has been second to none and our sponsors have been great. We are on the home stretch as far as building our bid is concerned however the Central Coast Bears will keep working towards their goal. We've jumped every hoop and performed every trick asked of us. More so than anyone else. Our bid is rock solid I can assure you.

its great to hear TBH , using that ground only 15-17 times a year is a crime.

You realize that the QLD Reds & Brisbane Roar play at Suncorp during alternate weekends to the Broncos? (Reds march-june/Roar july-now) Whilst it also holds internationals for soccer, league & union? Not to mention most of Brisbane's big events/concerts? Add to the fact that they'll surely be competiting against the Gabba's/Lion's crowds.

It makes it interesting but im super confident that the work we've put in is second to none. Im not worried hence why I posted the articles personally.

Its gonna come down to where the NRL/ comission wants a team. The WA,CC and Qld bids will all be viable. The best bid wont mean sh#t really.

This is the bid that RL needs.

Just call them the Diehards and RL will be pumping every week out of Lang Park which is the way it should be.

The QLD Reds can play out of Ballymore where they belong.
