Crowds for the World Cup

The sole promotion of the Central Coast game was Craig Fitzgibbon on a bus in a Scotland jumper.... This basically sums up the RLWC promotional campaign.

The big advantage of the RU WC was the pairing up of nations and local communities, ie basing a team in Perth and playing the majority of pool games there, plus the opportunity to purchase tickets to the big games only if you paid for a low level game...

If it was upto me I would have the WC held in not a host nation but a host hemisphere every 4 years... Ie if in the north we play pool games throughout British Isles , France etc... If its in the South we play pool games and even some finals in NZ Aust Pacific Islands and PNG, its a TV sport anyway so why not take the players to the fans...

So 73,000 to beat the 1992 aggregate. It is disturbingly quiet on the Australia v Fiji front to see if it can be beaten.

There was a huge deal being made of ticket sales before Centenary Test and a good crowd turned up. Another media push (too late now) for this game would've been great.

Yeah it's pretty weird, I thought there'd be more people at the game last night. I got my tickets a few months ago and my pax was 20K-odd (it's somewhere the ticket-watch thread) but we got them exchanged last night at the gate for new tickets to get into the cripple seats (one of us was on crutches from playing footy). Pax for the new tickets was 40,440 but the crowd was 26K. I wonder where the rest of the tickets went.

Rabs just said "I don't know who counted them" in reference to the crowd.

The guy must be friggin blind. It's 15k if I've ever seen it. STFU Rabs.

so this wc will be the 2nd highest average

2nd highest aggregate.

Assuming around 48K turn up for the final, we'll finish with an average of around 16,400 which puts us in the scheme of things as:

1957: 35,820
1968: 31,526
1954: 19,761
1960: 18,367
1995: 17,707
2008: 16,400ish
1992: 14,289
1970: 9,816
1975: 9,737
1972: 8,922
2000: 8,514

So the crowd average will be above the NRL.

Also on 57, 68, 54 and 60, there were only 4 nations in those tournaments, so if you were to compare apples for apples, and we just took into account Super Pool crowds and finals so far, we had an average of 20,802 and say with a tournament final of 48,000, we would finish with an average of 23,823.

Hey yak. Could you post where those world cups were held? Would be interesting to observe. Also, when and where is the next one?

I think that the grounds that got a match should have offered 10 dolar seats to season ticket holders of the respective teams.

Kills two birds:

1) Gets crowds up
2) rewards membership

Great idea...wish the ARL had done this.

Another game in Melbourne would have boosted the averages.

Whichever way you cut the numbers, I think the crowds for the semi-finals can only be regarded as disappointing. Playing what should be a showcase for the game, its major international event, in half full stadiums is not a good look. And by all reports, even those half full stadiums have been achieved with the help of plenty of freebies.

I don't want to rubbish this world cup - I was very cynical about it being a complete waste of time in the leadup, and I think it mostly has provided much better competition than expected - but the crowds, and the TV coverage have both been poor to very poor. I think to say otherwise is gilding the lily.

Reflects the low profile RL has amongst the general masses. Whilst other sports internationals are seen as must attend "events" RL continues to only be able to draw from its own fanbase. That comes down to lack of media, lack of TV coverage, lack of marketing and lack of players etc being on TV, in adverts etc etc.

Lets be honest the "waste of time", "joke tournament" articles were coming out weeks before the games started. What message does it send the general population? Have you ever seen a major sports tournament treat this way by the media before in Australia?
