Nathan Tinkler withdraws Knights offer

yes, it would be an instant return to the bad old days... and make all the pain and bullsh*t we went through with the Brian Smith sagas pretty much redundant.

additionally - my main concern with getting Tinkler, given all of the push and shove thus far, is that he'll come in feeling he's bigger than the NRL and start rorting the cap and sh*t. you can't just run around throwing money everywhere, it's not the way this works. there will be some more opportunity for 3rd parties - potentially - but it really shouldn't be the holy grail of recruitment that everyone thinks it is, as far as the amount of spend on players we have is concerned.

ignorant people just blab about 3rd party agreements like they are just this absolute free for all. there's more to it than that, and if the club (and that includes Tinkler, if he owns us, obviously) is guarenteeing income it still comes under the cap.

Your right man, I think a lot of the benefits will be off field with coaching and such and the quality we get there.

Plus dont forget just his presence when he sits down with players is huge.

With Souffs even if they had the $$$ and Piggins was still running them do you think they were ever a chance of getting a Burgess or a GI?

If the Bulldogs can have 2 massive shopping sprees within 3 years I'm sure we'll be okay having one little shop for 2012. If we don't bring in at least 2 maybe 3 rep quality players I'll be very disappointed.

March 30 looming as decision day for Nathan Tinkler takeover of Knights

MARCH 30 is looming as decision day for the Newcastle Knights as a deal with mining magnate Nathan Tinkler to take ownership of the NRL club edges closer to reality.
If all goes to plan Tinkler could be the new owner of the club just days before the Knights take on defending premiers St George in the first home game of the season at an upgraded EnergyAustralia Stadium on April 3.
Lawyers for both organisations were working yesterday to finalise a final draft document to take to Knights members after a breakthrough in negotiations on Wednesday.
Two days after withdrawing his $100 million offer for the club and insisting he would not renegotiate again with the existing board, Tinkler had a change of heart, addressing all of the Knights concerns in a revised bid.
The Knights board met on Thursday night and agreed in principle to the re-worded document, opening the door for Tinkler to take over the club.
Knights chairman Rob Tew said yesterday that provided the draft document was a true reflection of the offer put to his board on Thursday night, there would be an extraordinary meeting of members called. Tinkler will need a 75 per cent majority to vote in favour.
"At this stage, that meeting is likely to be held around March 30 if everything is in order with the new documentation," Tew said yesterday. "We haven't got there yet and it's my understanding lawyers for both parties have been working on that today to get something finalised.
"We are still having a members' information meeting on Monday night where a full history of what has happened over the past month will be outlined."
It's understood Tinkler's revised offer stipulates a guaranteed $10 million a year in sponsorship revenue over a 10-year period, around $3 million more than the club generates now.
He has also guaranteed to pay off the club's accumulated debt, rumoured to be between $3.5 to $4 million.
There are also buy-back and on-sell guarantees in place to protect the rights of club members and Tinkler has upped the ante with his spend on junior development.
A sweetener is a minimum $300,000 a year grant for 10 years to the domestic Newcastle Rugby League competition.
The future of the Patrons Trust financial model the Knights had intended adopting if Tinkler had not come back to the table is in limbo. It will remain a potential option until the Tinkler proposal is officially accepted.

Newcastle warm to Tinkler's latest offer
Robert Dillon
February 25, 2011

NATHAN TINKLER could own the Knights before the end of next month after Newcastle officials responded favourably yesterday to his revised takeover proposal.
Knights chief executive Steve Burraston said it was "likely" that the board would call an extraordinary general meeting for March 30, at which members could vote on Tinkler's bid.
If the required 75 per cent of voting members back the privatisation, Tinkler would effectively assume control of the club immediately, subject to legal formalities.
The ceasefire in hostilities and the new-found goodwill are remarkable given the breakdown in negotiations on Monday, when Tinkler and Knights officials traded acrimonious comments in the media.
The Tinkler Sports Group subsequently tabled a "clarified" proposal on Wednesday that attempted to resolve a number of sticking points the Knights had identified in the previous offer.
"It appears that all our concerns are being addressed in the new documents," Burraston said yesterday.
Nonetheless, Knights chairman Rob Tew said last night it would be premature to suggest that accepting the new proposal was a fait accompli.
Tew said it was "subject to us viewing the [full] documents", as opposed to the summarised draft the Knights received on Wednesday.
Asked whether it was too early to start speculating that Tinkler's offer would be approved by the board, Tew replied, "Yes it would be, because for us it's subject to perusal of the documentation.
"We've been there once before," he added. "We thought we had agreement on those items last time, yet they didn't appear in the draft documents. So we're cautious but optimistic. It's subject to us perusing the documentation."
Tew said lawyers representing both parties had been "to-ing and fro-ing all day", trying to reach an agreement.
He said he hoped that by today "at the latest" the Knights would have all the relevant paperwork, and that they would be in position to endorse, or otherwise, the Tinkler bid at a members' information meeting on Monday.
If the Knights board chooses to accept Tinkler's deal and endorse it on Monday night, it could avert a potential rebellion.
Club member Mark York presented the club yesterday with a petition signed by 150 members. Only 100 signatories are required to call an extraordinary general meeting, at which a vote of no confidence in the board could be tabled.
York said "hopefully the petition will not be required" because the Knights would reach an amicable settlement with Tinkler.
If, as expected, that scenario plays out, the much-publicised "patrons' trust" would be withdrawn.
Burraston said businessman Andrew Poole and the two other unnamed benefactors, who had pledged to provide the club with between $6 million and $10 million, had stipulated their offer did not apply if the Knights were privately owned.
"The guys in the patrons' trust have clearly said they would put their money in to ensure it remained a community and membership-owned organisation," Burraston said. "They wouldn't put their money in if it was privatised.
"I briefed Andrew Poole last night about where we were at, and he said, 'That's fine. It's a members' decision. If the members want to privatise, that's their prerogative.'
"But they're still there. If it gets to a members' meeting and it doesn't get voted through, their offer is still on the table."
Tinkler Sports Group executive chairman Ken Edwards did not respond to messages left for him yesterday.

Let's be real here JW we don't want to get off the coaster if we do in fact get TLL and Snowy etc. and more to the point do it legitimately leaving the rest of the comp scratching their heads as to how we do it. Man if we got Coops back and sign big jamal we would have a killer backline with Liki liki , Aku and Kids rounding it out. Make it happen Tinkler but do it legally.
