Ben Creagh backs St George Illawarra’s decision to chase Corey Norman

ST George Illawarra veteran Ben Creagh has backed the club’s decision to chase Corey Norman, labelling the troubled Parramatta playmaker a “special player” who deserves a “second chance”.

And the Dragons’ longest- serving current player believes his club has a proven track record of helping players get their careers back on track, pointing to Josh Dugan and Russell Packer as proof.

Despite being stood down for the rest of the season after pleading guilty to possessing prohibited drugs and being involved in a sex tape scandal, Norman is on the most wanted list for off-contract players.

While Norman has previously stated his preference to stay at the Eels next year, the Dragons have reportedly weighed in with an $800,000-a-year offer to make him change his mind.

RECRUITMENT DRIVE: Cashed-up Dragons chasing superstars

It’s more than twice the Dragons offered Benji Marshall, who played his 250th NRL game on Sunday.

Asked if he would want to see Norman at the Dragons, Creagh told Triple M: “Definitely. Corey Norman is a special player. Watching him run around on a rugby league field, he is a handful.

“He has had a few dramas this year.

“But I think, you see with a lot of players in rugby league and in sport in general, when they go through tough times, when they go through turbulent times in their life where a few things aren’t going right, I think when they are given a second chance they make the most of it.”

Creagh also spoke about the work the Dragons had done with Dugan and Packer as examples of why the club could help with Norman’s career on and off the field.

“There is two perfect examples,” Creagh said.

“Those two have come along leaps and bounds.

“You could arguably say Josh Dugan is one of the best fullbacks in the game and Russell Packer has been outstanding for us all year.

“He hasn’t missed a game and really turned his life around.

“Guys like Corey Norman deserve a second chance.

“He has done a few things wrong.

“If a guy like that wanted to come to our club and we could get him I think that would be great.”

Kiss of Death...he will re-sign with Parra. Why would he want to come to our rabble ? Mary will ruin him as a footy player.

If we buy Farah and Norman it could be a magnet for players wanting to come here, we have a few good players that will be resigned, add to that a few juniors and will be much better...oops one more think fire our useless coach

Corey Norman....brother please come to the mighty Dragons and help rebuild our club...we need you badly!
One good half and well go alright, get rid of Rein, get a new coach we showed So much potential today just all the little things that are fixable as Gus said..... were a damn good team but just a very badly coached footy team! I saw so many great things today from the Tigers game...one things for sure, Aitken and Milne should be our centres for years!! Damn that Milne is a gun and Aitken getting better and better....imagine Norman there with a decent hooker and a good coach wed be unbeatable!

As i said elsewhere we need to get smart !!! Management needs to get smart !! 2.4mill to get Norman is this wise ? 2.4 for Norman or maybe 2.4 for 2 or 3 quality players or maybe 2 quality players and keep some promising youngsters ?? (maybe this approach could have been used to keep Bird or Hastings or now Leilua) They say big name players will attract sponsors but will Norman attract Sponsorship with his past ??? Winning games also attracts more fans at the game and sponsorship and we need more that 1 superstar to achieve that !!! So guys please lets get smart !!! If we have the money well then lets splash it around but i think we all know we dont really have it

norman also rejects the dragons massive offer....

CONTROVERSIAL five-eighth Corey Norman is close to rejecting a massive offer from St George Illawarra to sign a new deal with Parramatta.

In a major boost to the Eels, Norman is believed to be set to put pen to paper on a rich new three-year deal at the club.

Norman has been suspended for the remainder of the season after being caught in possession of drugs and participating in a sex tape.

The eight-game ban and $20,000 fine put his future in jeopardy – but Norman remains a hot property despite his indiscretions.

His decision will be another huge blow to the Dragons, who continue to throw big money at players without any success.

This year alone, the Dragons have failed in their pursuit of Cooper Cronk, Luke Keary and now Norman.

Norman began his career at the Broncos but has been at the Eels since 2014 and is regarded among the classiest playmakers in the NRL.

Yep, we'll have enough for 2 teams in 2017 - the official team & the combination of players who supposedly rejected our deals

Good. Don't care. One good injury and you have blown $2.4 million. Rather spend it on a decent coach.

Confirmed, Norman just re signed with the eels, rejecting the big money offer from St George Illawarra, Did anyone really think he was going to sign with us??? And with all the good things Brown is doing at Newcastle, we won't get Hodkinson either, That f**kwit Doust needs to get rid of Mcgregor, and quickly, Very quickly, otherwise the wooden spoon will be coming our way very shortly.

Our offer to Norman wasn't much more than Parra's.
I didn't expect him to come across.
Parra will have a new board and will get the payments of 3rd party deals in order once Greenburg shows them how to do it correctly.

We are stuffed and cant get anyone decent in.
Poor coach and poorly run club are to blame but its us the fans who suffer.
We need a complete overhaul as a club bit a new coach would be a good start.

Sigh...once upon a time we paid overs, but landed the signing. These days we offer overs and all we catch is thin air time and time again.

Utterly bloody depressing.

The deafening silence from the club on recruitment and retention is very frustrating and worrying. At least Mulholland would give interviews and updates on what the recruitment team were doing and the process they were undertaking. Has anyone heard from or sighted the current recruitment manager?? and I don't mean the twit Millward who supposedly is the manager of "Pathways"...the only direction the pathways for the juniors is heading is into oblivion

One of the saddest things about our clubs current situation , is that there just does not appear to be one , single person who can turn the clubs fortunes around !
Not one , look at the current board members . They all seem to be hamstrung by their own inability to think and act in a logical manner . So the club is basically suffocating through lack of oxygen , almost in the same manner that a person does .
Another forum member mentioned in a post how Brian Smith upon his departure from the club , made mention of the fact that the Dragons had the same stench of death that Newtown had about them , when that club was in its death throes.
I most sincerely hope not . There is no point in wishing for a miracle , as that will not happen . The Clubs Board must look long and hard at themselves , right NOW , and do what is right for the Club , not for themselves !
We , must have something to look forward to next year ,they at least owe that much to the fans , the team and the Club itself !

Jobs for the boys equals on-going failure as they dig their heels & think they can fix the mess they've created. The worst mistake we can make now is to pay overs for a 2nd string player like Ray Thompson.
