What are everyones thoughts on player managers do you think there r such thing as good and bad ones like do they influence clubs on how much money the players contract is worth or is it only down to the players ability?

Player managers, currently, like our current NRL Management is severly inept. As we move towards a more americanised and professional era in sport, Player Managers and the Management will become more of a neccessity as the code evolves.

George Mimis, Wayne Beavis, Sam Ayoub, Jim Banaghan why do we here these names more than others r they better?
I'd say those you mentioned manage most of the higher profile players.

Well basically they are expert negotiators with deals, they organise sporting sponsorships etc etc. They take care of the business affairs for professional atheletes and leaves them to concentrate on performing. Ofcourse some are better than others, but there is no quantitative measure and you would have to go with 'past results' or 'gut feelings'

Players decide themselves if they want a manager or not, no one is telling them to sign with one, it just lets them concentrate on footy and thats it. A player manager takes care of all the off field business, such as, taxation, legal side of things, finding homes for players whether it be to live in or as an investment property, as well as get them the best possible deal from clubs and sponsorships and promotions.

Smile in answer to your question, yes they are the more respected managers in the game and do have some high profile players to. There are also bad managers who have a bad reputation, that being Gavin Orr, he has done alot of things to get in the bad books of his clients, it is why SBW left him, he also signed a contract and forged fuifui moimoi's signature on a melbourne strom contract a few years back.

It's a sure sign that today's players are being paid too much if they have money to waste on these player manager merkins...

Get rid of the lot of 'em, there is more risk of them bringing the game into disrepute than having them bring any real benefit to the code or their client players to be honest.

They have the most players on their books

They have that because they are the most aggressive in recruiting players - often at young ages

Managers are out to get the best deal available for their client. Not everyone has the best negotiating skills and a player manager can do this as well as properly incorporate and explain all terms of the contract. I can applaud a player who wishes to do all this themselves but with the big money league players earn, and the clubs sometimes treat players they wish to discard a manager certainly helps. Obviously some are better than others as per any other job out there.

What has changed in recent years is that managers have no interest in protecting the code at all.

f**kwits like Gasnier's manager and his ilk treat union as another NRL or Super League team.

When Gasnier is missing from the RLWC at the end of the year and the ads all feature him, maybe the f**kwit managers will put two and two together and realise it isn't all in their best interests after all...

At the end of the day, we need to remember the more money the player gets the more money their manager gets. They are trying to make money for themselves at the same time.

Players can do it themselves, but player managers usually have contacts within clubs, and they can get the best deal at certain clubs

Vultures. You only have to see or hear the way they treat many good juniors to see what kind of scum 90% of them are. The worst thing is there are more and more of them, especially targetting the 15 or 16 year old kids, every year. And what's worse is the new crop are possibly even dodgier than the old ones.

Most managers sign up kids at about 16, or even younger, and only show any interest in them when the money starts coming in. Basically they sign them up and ignore them until they get to the age/ability where NRL clubs are lining up. Then they show up with their hands out. I've seen several cases where a kid has been signed at 15 or 16 because he's shown promise, then the kid has been injured or gone off the boil a bit and the manager is nowhere to be found. Sometimes those same kids find their feet again and the NRL clubs start circling. Suddenly the manager is back. And there are even worse examples of the dodginess of managers than that believe me.
