He is right that the heat swimmers used to miss out. I'm not sure exactly when they started giving them medals but they haven't always.

Does not happen in the Olympics. In the World Champs you can do that but Olympic medals are restricted to competitors in the final except in very rare circumstances and this is not one of them.

You're a f**king idiot...f**k up

Congrats to Rice and the other girls in the 4x200m. Wasn't expecting us to take that one out, but Rice and then Barratt and Palmer took it out real well. Wish Rice could be our Phelps and swim more events. Looking at it, if she had done the 4x100m relay and the 4x100 medley relay she would have 5 medals already.

Other than that race it was disappointing, was expecting 2 golds from today in Shipper and Sullivan.

I think you are being a little unfair on Sullivan. It was always going to be a toss of the coin job and both swimmers were pretty much on a par. 0.11 seconds between them for gold and that's bugger all. He holds the world record and it's unrealistic to expect a record every time he hits the water. 2nd best in the world is nothing to be ashamed of.

I must admit that some of the comments on the News site are quite disgusting:

I agree it was a toss of the coin, just doesn't change the fact I was expecting the gold from him after his swims so far.

Sullivan still has the 50m to go. Hopefully he can use this as inspiration for that. Im pretty sure he touched out bernard at the 50m mark in the 100m.

Unless they changed it for this Olympics, I know they did not award medals for "heat" swimmers in Athens. I doubt they would have changed that rule to be honest in one Olympics.

Yes they did in Athens and every previous Olympics

I think it's weird that people specialise in backstroke. That would like running backwards for a living.

I'm watching the girls relay now and dying of excitement. GO GIRLS.
