I hear this argument all the time, that we should be blooding a new half. There are issues with that argument. We know B. Hunt is coming and he has the 7 jersey all wrapped up. To blood a young half I think would mean getting Widdop's nose out of joint (unless we have already told him he is not required next year). Yes we could dump McCrone but he is the one that Hunt will be coming to directly replace (not only number but role in the team), and therefore blooding a young half would sent a very clear message IMO to Widdop and the rest of the team making them unstable. The Dragons have Dugan, they just need to agree on a price. The Dragons have Hunt and McInnes so the main position left to sort out in their spine is five-eighth. If it is not to be Widdop, Mary should be at least testing what he has in-house and Millward should be using his white board eraser to make room for an external purchase in the case that Field / Dufty / Mann / Hutch don't fit the bill for 2018.
In addition to that, regardless of what we think on the 2017 season, we still need to field our best side. Yes there is a strong argument to say that McCrone is not in our best side but that is not about "blooding a half" that is about replacing a plodder with someone with a lot more potential upside. Sadly in the end it is a mute point because I can't see Mary removing McCrone regardless.
