Alcohol advertising has been scaled back considerably since last century - I can't remember a booze ad as part of a RL broadcast.
Overall it would hard to find a business enterprise that ticks the boxes as for as ethics and the good of society is concerned. Banks? Real estate? Telcos? And the ones that could tick the boxes wouldn't want to be associated with League anyway.

In uk the mobile companies seem to be big players in the sports market, don't know if it's Telstra influence in nrl but we don't seem to see the same sponsorship opportunities in nrl. Surprising given how much money and competition there is in the market.

Same doom and gloom was said when they decided to ban tobacco advertising.

That Jim Beam Double Barrel bourbon ad was on at least 6 times during last night's Test.

About as terrible as banning cigarette advertising, pity it's not a total ban.

I remember when I was a 13 year old and Blacktown was surrounded with bushland, given good pocket money to sit on a log with a whistle in case the cops got anywhere near the local 2-up . . . there's a place for everything and no place in RL for gambling

Yeah a total ban will work..

Just look at the war on drugs

Biggest boon for organised crime in Australia ever.

You are shoving the concept of gambling down the throats of children from the time they are old enough to talk. The same has been happening for a couple of generations with alcohol, and smoking before that. It is why we now have an epidemic of binge drinking among teenagers.

The upshot for sport is that player salaries will have to fall. They've risen by an extraordinary amount in recent times anyway, by comparison to incomes in general. This might mean some players will go overseas for the big money (where they don't have these laws), but this will affect soccer and rugby much more than RL or Aussie Rules.

This move is unexpected coming from the party that so strongly opposed poker machine reforms, I'd suggest.

Then parents need to step up and do their thing. Stop blaming society for their shitty abilities.

With current tech it's easy to edit out the ads for kids to watch.

Or watch with them & change the channel when the ads come on. Ie. do your bloody job as a parent!

"The gambling advertising restrictions will see all betting ads banned between five minutes before a live sports broadcast and until five minutes after the final buzzer or 8.30pm, whichever comes first." (SMH)

So they'll be allowed to run gambling ads/content during preview programs up to 5 minutes before kick-off, and no doubt during half time (which may be regarded as not a live sports broadcast especially if it is a panel situation in the studio) as well.

Expect quarters to be introduced to the game as a result.

OK so parents need to record games, then edit them so kids can watch. Of course they won't be able to watch games live cause the kids will want to watch too. It all seems a bit complicated and not many people are going to do it. I'd support advertising for products that are harmful to children not occurring during children's viewing hours. This includes junk food ads.

Yep.
Time kick off so that quarter time is about 8.30. In addition extend the game by stopping the clock when the ball is out of play.
Its all good. League can do well out of it.

Not all bad news for tv

Australia's free-to-air broadcasters have welcomed a $100 million win from the federal government's broader media reform package, which includes the slashing of free-to-air TV licence fees, trimming the anti-siphoning list for sporting events and tighter restrictions on gambling ads during live sports matches.
Existing exemptions for advertising that covers the racing industry and lotteries will remain.
Anti-gambling campaigner and Senate crossbencher Nick Xenophon said the measure was a good first step but didn't go far enough.
"It's not the end of the story in terms of gambling reform," he told AAP on Saturday.

"We need to ban all gambling ads during sports broadcasts, but at least we've made some progress."

He said sports previews shows should also be monitored for their promotion of gambling odds.

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie said gambling ads in sports broadcasts during G-rated viewing periods were normalising gambling for children and had to stop.

"We know that children are especially susceptible to advertising and hero worship and that gambling advertising has a real and measurable impact on the children who are subjected to it," he said.

Australia's free-to-air broadcasters enthusiastically welcomed the new package.

Excellent move, people have every right to gamble but keep it seperate from sport. Hate having to watch bookies pretending to be commentators. At least since Tom Waterhouse they've toned it down.

Except Jamie rogers appearance on matty johns show which is nothing more than a betting section of the tv show, the remote is accessed as soon as I hear johns say "and please welcome....."

The last four ads before the first test match today on fox were beer, betting, betting cheese. I'll do a HT update.
