Sunny Coast won't happen in the next 5 years. The costs of running a QLD cup side are huge, and they need some time in the FOGS cup first, then a good sponsor and then maybe they can think about it.

PNG had elaborate plans to enter a second side in 1998, the Rangers, to balance the Port Moresby Vipers, with the visiting teams playing two games a visit in either direction to ease costs. In the end a lack of support from the Qld Clubs put paid to the Vipers and any chance of a continued PNG presence in the Cup.

The colour and international flavour that the Vipers brought to the mainland was not enough to convince either the QRL to assist (considering that all Clubs were travel costs were paid for by the QRL except the Vipers who paid their own way - hardly fair) or to off-set the security concerns players had when visiting PNG (although from my personal experience even though the games were tough, the visiting teams were treated very well by the local officials and fans alike).

Two PNG sides, the original sides such as Bundaberg, Mackay and Sunshine Coast less Brisbane teams NT (who used to be the Titans), TI or Peninsula - you name 'em and if the costs can be met get them all in. Similarly a NSW/Vic/SA/Wa comp too. And while we're at it why not a proper Pacific Island comp? Talk about heads in the sand. The whole issue comes from not enough cash so how about media sponsorship for the NRL including mandatory support for the out posts aka the heartland of our sport?

Cairns are putting in a serious bid to join next year, with the backing of the local league and the Cowboys. The bid team is headed by Dennis Keeffe, who was the CEO of the Cowboys from 2002-2005.

Great for the NQ mob - how about something from west of the Great Divide and less from the Brisbane?

That would make sense so we all know what the chances of that happening are...

A real Red Hill boy would be backing the once-mighty Panthers back in and frig the usurping Ponies. You're right though, get the NRL out of the Qld Cup and make it truly QRL based. Sadly, that's as about as likely as merging the remaining Sydney teams.
