Why do people call RU, 'rugby'??

They were playing Rugby Football.

So were the pupils at Rugby School years before the RFU were formed yet that, conveniently, doesn't seem to carry much weight for you.

It's just a fact that both rugby and union can trace their lineage directly back to the game played at Rugby School and neither rugby nor union can claim any first dibs on the name.

bollox... however until the RFU standardised the rules, there were many and varied versions of "rugby football"... the RFU's rules were so succesful that that in 1895 the "NU" clubs continued to use them.

They both share a common ancestor in the same way that father and son have the "grandad" as the common ancestor.... RL's "lineage" INCLUDES the RFU in it. Rugbys doesnt have RL in theirs.... IF RL had have split and use based their rules on those played at the Rugby School, instead of using the same rules that the RFU had, then you would have a point, they didnt, so you dont.

More like brothers with the same father but different mothers.......quite a common theme in the Auckland region I believe....

Well that proves you are still a school kid... your lack of even basic comprehension with regards to that analogy shows a distinct gap in your education.... and what you believe you know about the Auckland region would fit on the tip of a needle, with room for the king james bible.

The Rugby School pupils standardised the rules too. The Northern union clubs briefly used the rules the RFU played to before improving on them however the name of the game comes from Rugby School not the RFU so you argument is nonsense.

The pupils standardised the rules??? they didnt even write them down... the first written "rugby football" rules were written down by a Rugby school old boy, years after leaving the school.

The name does come from the school, and nobody is disputing RL has the right to use "rugby" as the name of the code but the RFU used the name "Rugby" well before RL used it.. so they have first rights to the name.

The work to draw up the first standardised set of rules started at Rugby School on the 25th August 1845 and ended on the 28th August of that year. The work was undertaken by three senior pupils at Rugby School (William Arnold, W W Shirley and Frederick Hutchins) - 37 rules were submitted and a rule book was printed.

If you must insist on trying to argue your ridiculous assertion at least try to base it on facts.

From the same website you stole that from "The rules had always been determined by the pupils and not the masters and they were frequently modified with each new intake. Rules changes, such as the legality of carrying or running with the ball, were often agreed shortly before the commencement of a game. There were thus no formal rules for football during that time"
Still doesnt change the fact that RL spawned from Rugby which has first rights to the name "Rugby"

You said that the IRB/RFU et al PREFERED the name "Rugby Union".. YOU made that claim... the fact that its not in any of their legal names sort of proves you made that claim up... thats its relevance.
unionite in making stuff up shocker
Again.

It also re-enforces the fact that "rugby" isnt the name of the sport. Even the irFb agrees that rugby union sounds way better than 'Football as played by the x union'
irb handbook said:
Rugby Union is a sport which involves physical contact.

FFS.. you really didnt read the thread at all did you... the handbook isnt a legal document, its use of "Rugby Union" is to differentiate the codes... find one legal document that has "Rugby Union" as a name and you might have a point... but you wont find one.. because Rugby Union isnt the codes name.

Your quote refers to the game at Rugby School before the pupils I mentioned were tasked with drawing up the rules which were subsequently printed. Please at least make an effort to be factual and try not use quotes out of context.

Regardless, rules change over time in most sports - clarifying rules is no different to union teams which get in refs before a game to explain the rules they will be using.

Rugby and union spawned from the game played at Rugby School so neither has first rights to the name "Rugby".

The first of the codes has first rights to the name.. anybody with more than a modicum of intelligence would understand that...

and the simple fact is that League spawned from the RFU... it even used the same rules that the RFU codified... so its clear.. Rugby has the first rights to the name League the second.
