ST GEORGE Illawarra will start the search soon for a new coach in 2015 and beyond but the immediate task falls upon caretaker coach Paul McGregor to turn the team's flagging fortunes around.
The Dragons are 13th on 10 points and have lost six of their past seven games.
McGregor, 46, was given the job by chief executive Peter Doust and the board after they sacked Steve Price last weekend.
McGregor, who is on the NSW State of Origin coaching staff, flew back to Brisbane yesterday to prepare for the Blues clash with Queensland at Suncorp Stadium.
NSW coach Laurie Daley, who worked on the Dragons coaching staff in 2003 when Nathan Brown was head coach, for the moment has ruled himself out as possible replacement.
Gold Coast Titans assistant coach Neil Henry, a former Cowboys coach, has been mentioned as a possible candidate.
"Under the circumstances if I didn't do this then someone else would have and the only reason why I am is to make it an easier transition for the players rather than having someone from the outside come in," McGregor said after training on Tuesday.
"Steve is a really good guy and he is hurting. Anyone in that position would be but he understands that that's rugby league.
"He said he still wants the boys to work really hard and perform for the rest of the year.
"It's hard for me because he's a mate of mine and we work well together but he's not here."
In other news, towering Canberra forward Tom Learoyd-Lahrs is being sought by the Dragons to bolster their forward stocks.
They are keen to sign him for the remainder of this season before the June 30 deadline.
