And where in that rulebook does it say the ballboy must place the ball on the sideline for the tap?
I can't find it anywhere.

Interestingly, there is no mention of the role of the ball boy in the section 9.8 of the Rugby League Laws of the Game, released in February this year.

The new rule states: “When a kick in general play and from inside a team’s 40 metre zone, finds touch (other than on the full) in the opposition’s 20 metre zone, the resulting tap kick restart will be awarded to the kicking team 20 metres in from touch opposite where the ball crossed the touch line, but no closer than 10 metres from the goal line.”

It is the only mention of 40/20 kicks in the Rugby League Laws of the Game.

In the NRL Handbook, sent out to every club, there is a point about ball kids.

“Ball persons must place and leave the ball on the touchline at the point where the ball crossed the line and next to the touch judge. Ball persons MUST NOT under any circumstances, throw the ball into the field of play or to a Player close to the touch line.”

Hayne had the ball knocked out

every other time that happens they rule knock on against the defending team

No, I think it depends upon whether the ref judges the ball carrier as holding the ball 'loosely' Like most things in league unfortunately it is the refs interpretation.

In terms of loose carries, it depends on which way the ball came out.

If it had have come out backwards (in relation to HaHa) then it would have been a Dogs knock on and they couldn't have grabbed it but we could have and played on with six-to-go. Unfortunately for us, it came out forward in relation to HaHa, so it was our knock on.

Just to ice any doubt over the legality of Sandow's use of the knee for the tap restart.

2014 NRL Rulebook

Doesn't change the outcome of the ballboy/Toutai call but Sandow DID correctly restart play and would have scored had play gone on.

When I said he used his knee (I was the first one to point it out, merkins) I was being loose.

From what I saw last night, he used his thigh, just above his knee. I think it was just incorrect.

This was just posted regarding the Drags V Raiders game

Dragons just scored a try in U20s from a quick tap following a 40/20. The ball was passed in by a team mate.

it went forward off the Dogs hand

Gould said in commentary that 9 times out of 10 they rule that a knock on

we are always the 1 time out of 10 team

Tap Kick: Making contact with the ball with any part of the leg (except the heel) from knee to toe inclusive; ground/territory cannot be gained from such a kick.

So what the f**k is wrong with a "heel"? ... geez, that'd be hard - if you can heel it then play on I say!

I saw the U20s 40/20 .... there WAS a ballboy - he ran in and put the spare ball on the line - HOWEVER a st george player ran off and got the original ball that was kicked and threw that back in and they took a quick tap and scored a try on the far side

so very different to our case

Still doesn't sound legal according to the 'rules'.

I don't what you blokes are whingeing about. I got home from the pub/dinner last night, just in time to turn the TV on and what do I see? the 40/20 - ball boy - no try incident. I've watched the tape of the first half....can't quite bring myself to watch the second yet.

They also got some penalties on tackles 1 or 2. It's swings and roundabouts. We made more than 3 times as many mistakes as them. They held the ball much better than us. Generally the team that holds possession the best will win the game. We need to learn to hold the ball better and stop running ourselves into touch

Yes, why do we continue to run towards the sideline? You could argue it was inexperience for Pauli and Radradra, but Hoppa at the end?

FMD, we are hard to please, a team that has won successive wooden spoons, their 2 best forwards out for the majority of the season in Peats and Ma'u,playing 3 kids under 20 upfront and there's a moan about the season

Give them and the coaching staff a heads up for being where they are, it's been a pleasure to go to games thinking we were going to win, how different from the last 2 pretenders that coached

With what the club has coming through and with some astute recruiting, the future looks good

I was responding to a post that it was only 3 games that defined our season. I was responding and was pointing out that there was more than just those particular 3.

I am not sure if anyone else has said it but we had 35 minutes to score, dominated them but couldn't get the try. Forget what happened with the 40/20 in the 78th minute and see that we just don't have the polish to get the winning try. Even after that incident Hopoate gets talked into touch.

We had so many half chances but couldn't get a try, we basically dominated for the last half but we didn't offer enough in attack to break them.

The Plane was brilliant, but he just wasn't brilliant enough on this night...
