I could be wrong but my read on the $300k was that it was already eaten into the cap somewhere and just not paid.

Like I said, I could be wrong and probably am.

Why would they bother back-ending it if the salary cap didn't recognise the back-ending? Unlikely that they were just short of cash.

But even if true (and I guess it might be....if they thought it would be salary cap effective and then the NRL rejected the back-ending), and it means that his cap value for 2015 is only $600k, the 'bonus' simply puts a lower bound on the amount that Manly would have to eat of his cash salary next year.

What is the big deal about the $300k bonus? It's the same as any other promised salary. All that is relevant is that Watmough's total promised salary for 2015 is $900k (or whatever it truly is), and that his cap value for 2015 will be $900k, either borne entirely by Manly, or across 2 clubs. The fact that $300k of the $900k comes from a deferred bonus doesn't seem to make any difference.

The best chance of this going ahead is if Watmough accepts an overall pay cut to secure his release and signs a 2 year deal with us. That could mean his 2015 cap value is less than $900k . E.g. He signs a deal with the Eels for $700k for 2015 and $450k for 2016, with Manly to eat $200k of the 2015 contract.

I cannot see Watmough signing a deal with us for two years. Manly have already offered him a 2 year extension until the end of 2017. Why would he just sign for Parra until the end of 2016?

We will have to sign him for 3 years

Because he wants out of there.

That maybe so, but I cannot see him signing here for 2 years. Was not another reason Watmough knocked back the 2 year deal is because he wanted 3 years?

Just look at Isaac De Gois, we only needed him for half a season and had to sign him for 2 1/2 years to get him to leave a club where is contract was up at the end of the season.

De Gois is on considerably less money, and we were between a rock and a hard place at the time with Peats' injury.

Either way, my example re Watmough wasn't to argue for a 2-year contract....it was to point out that a contract that went for longer than 1 year, with Watmough agreeing to a pay cut therein could potentially reduce his 2015 salary cap value, and increase the chance of him moving clubs.

We needed to sign IDG, so we had to make sure if the $$ wasn't good that his job security was.

Manly defered his NSW and Australian bonuses until next season. The $300,000 will count against their cap regardless of who he is with.

If he is being paid $600,000 next season plus the bonuses and we accept to pay $450,000 they will still have $450,000 against their cap. Not too many clubs, other than ours it seems, would take that big a hit for one player.

I can't see him being released before his contract finishes.

Yes, but $450k is a lot of cap space which manly could use to re-sign cherry/foran especially if watmough doesn't want to be there.

As I have said if the recruitment drive lands Watmough for 2015 than I can understand the reasonings behind the recruitment set up. I still can't see Manly paying $450,000 - $600,000 for a player they don't have on their books. Remember that they HAVE to pay $300,000 regardless of where he is. Given the apparent issues we have I can't see us paying more than $450,000 unless we are heavily back ending his deal....

BA said in an interview not long back that he does not backend deals.

Ok -thanks for clearing that up.
Like I said, I was probably wrong.

Personally, I reckon BA knows what we need enough to pay up to $550k to $600k for Watmough.

Signing Watmough is not solve our halves issue.

We have enough young kids in Pauli, Tepai plus Gower, Terepo, Mau and now McPherson, Wicks, Nelson.

Bad move IMO

You would think the Raiders would sniff around and end up bumping up Watmough's price. I doubt he would go to the Raiders, as it is a long commute from the Northern Beaches, but I think he will cost significantly more than we're expecting

Agree it doesn't solve our halves issue (if we have one) but it sure does go along way to solve our losing, switched-off, roll-over, don't like to be favourites, softest pack in the NRL, lack of forward leadership, attitude issue.

Yes the halves need to improve, but is it really our biggest issue? I reckon our piss weak defence is a bigger problem.

I reckon our halves have enough points in them for us to win plenty of games if our defence was fixed

Our halves are fine. That was their first season together and they won more than half their games.

They need better support from their forwards. More (and smarter) movement off the ball is what causes defenders to make mistakes and gives halves options.

Don't discount the BA factor.
