All they need to do is change the rule so the defensive team based on territory gets the ball, so last night manly would have got it back OR if the dogs were coming out of their own end and it hit the ref they'd get a fresh set.

That change means the ruling will always have minimal impact on the game. Pretty simple really.

Voice of reason as usual Danish. It is too simple.

I also think it is funny that you can punch a guy in the head and if you're holding the guys shirt you don't get binned. I understand why they made the no punching rule but I think the only difference between Starling and the Dogs player he was fighting was that the Dogs player held his jersey while doing it

Jackson hit him with a clenched fist to the head first whilst holding Starling's jumper. Common sense says he goes to the bin. Sadly that is lacking at NRL HQ but I guess we will get wifi soon so it is all good lol.

At the end of the day it should always be the tackling teams scrum feed - it is the kicking team who have stuffed up. The tackling team have no control where the kick goes. The kicking team have acres of space to aim away from the refs. If they miss and hit a ref they deserve to lose the ball. Common sense.

It is only because it happened to Manly in a big game that it is now an issue.

I was a referee and when they taught this rule everyone said, "But that's not fair". I already knew the rule and have had player try and execute a play like this when I was refereeing, that is why I never got hit because I was always looking out for it.

Yeah that's why because it was Manly

Wake up

Good point.

The uncontested scrum is the main reason the rule is not acceptable to the majority. It is amazing how one change in philosophy 20+ years ago results in the flaws behind obscure rules being exposed now.

To that point, the rule states the attacking team gets the scrum and feed. The attacking team is defined by territory - so if that had happened inside the Bulldogs' half Manly would have the feed.

Even that shows how much the game has changed. These days everyone involved with the game would consider the attacking team as the team with possession of the ball.

You do understand teams generally have a game plan and structure their plays accordingly.

"So we got a defender who isnt up to standard, but lets not run or kick to him because the referee is over there too".

Great coaching there.

Ah the old jumper punch. The AFL boys have been onto that one for years, until they started getting suspended for it.

why not just make it play on? Like the posts?
I mean if a kicker thinks they can hit a moving target with a kick and it will advantage their team, so be it, good luck to them

Yes, it should just be play on. All these people on here saying the rule can't be changed - bullshit. It's pretty simple.

It's not that simple.

When a player is called held the ball isn't in play and there is a definitive reference point to restart. What if Canterbury run 50m before they kick? Where do you restart? It's not fair to send them all the way back. A play in motion is never redone and never should be.

The rule only comes into play maybe 3-4 times a season. It's one of the odd ones regarding the restart but that's the way it is, and I can't see alternative which is viable.

How about a play the ball or tap from where the ball struck the ref, team last in posession gets the ball at the spot where the ball hit the ref, no restart of the tackle count.

I think a lot of you guys are missing the point. With 2 referees nowadays and one standing right beside the play the ball what’s to stop the dummy half deliberately throwing or kicking the ball into the 2nd ref?

"Waaaaaaah, my team lost so we have to change the rules."

Toovey and Manly fans could whinge under concrete.

So its a good rule then?

My early Xmas present will be the Cowboys going out 4 seasons in a row from this rule next season then.

Its a bullshit rule for all teams at anytime. Fullstop.

The existing rule allows for discretion as it is - if the referee believes the ball contacting him had an adverse effect on the play - i.e. he stopped a potential scoring play or whatever, which is what happened Saturday. In the case of what you describe above, it'd likely be play on, as the player nearest to the ref would instinctively pick up the ball.

It does seem unreasonable that the bulldogs got six more tackles after it hit the ref. simple rule change: take the play back to the last play the ball and restart that tackle, just like they do when players don't hear a held call.

Toovey's just a born whinger. Even I f he was being showered by $100 notes and being tit f**k by kate upton he'd still whinge at his press conference.

I don't think I'd want to be tit f**ked by Kate Upton. In fact I'd definitely whinge.

But on a more serious note...to me, once you kick the ball, possession is no longer yours. There may be a discretionary note in the rules if it is a grubber where the player was very likely to regather, but otherwise a handover is more relevant.

And the rule needs to change this week. It sucks. Wasn't there a rule that changed mid-week earlier in the season?

I know this is a difficult time for Manly supporters but there is no need to be truly pathetic.

Your club could learn a lesson in class from Paul Green and North Queensland. But I doubt that will happen.

Most kicks these days are an attacking option, not just to hoof the ball down to the other end of the field.

Using your logic of "once you kick the ball, possession is no longer yours", one could kick, regather and that would constitute the start of a new set.

The rule is fine as it is.

There are plenty of rules in the NRL which are stupid. There are also 365 days in the year. Why do coaches like Toovey 'suddenly' realize a rule is shit and moan about it only on the one day its application has impacted their team. They just come across as whingers and sore losers. If they want better rules, raise it in the offseason ffs and keep your moaning pieholes quiet during the season.
