Geeze, Josh McGuire, are we planning for 2016 already? 6 year plan.

Well, up until yesterday we had arguably the best fullback in the game playing for us. Today we are in the hunt for anyone we can get. Our odds of making the eight next year lengthened considerably. We are back in the same boat we have been for every season since 2009....

EELS TARGET FOLAU TO REPLACE HAYNE

October 16, 2014

THE Eels have already started to look for potential replacements for Jarryd Hayne following the star fullback’s shock decision to quit the NRL to follow a dream to play NFL.

Israel Folau is set to be targeted by the club for a second time, with the Eels suddenly finding themselves with over $1 million a season to play with.
“Anybody who says they don’t want Izzy is lying to you,” Eels CEO Scott Seward told News Corp.
“We’ll look at every opportunity out there and if he wants to come back to rugby league, we’ll certainly be a club that wants to have a chat with him.
“From a player perspective, we can definitely attack a little more than we could before. We have to attack.
“We have to find a replacement for the best player in the game and we will. Obviously you can’t replace Jarryd — I don’t think we should try — but we do want a side that can get out there and win the competition.”
Despite Hayne’s excitement at the prospect of a potential NFL deal, the superstar fullback says he won’t be leaving without plugging his former team to good mate Folau one more time.
“Izzy is really close to Timmy Mannah and Junior Paulo too and we all go to church together as well . . . and we’re always talking about the possibility of Izzy coming to Parra,” Hayne told the Triple M Grill Team.
“I know for a fact that deep down he loves rugby league . . . so I’m sure if the opportunity came up and the deal was right, then I’m sure Izzy would come back.
“He loves in Kellyville too so he is a local boy.”
While Broncos duo Ben Barba and Josh Hoffman have also been reportedly linked to Parramatta, one player the club won’t be looking at is controversial Wallabies player Kurtley Beale.
“I don’t think Kurtley would be at the Eels,’’ Seward said. “I have never met Kurtley and don’t know a lot about him, but I’m not sure he would be the right fit for what we’re trying to build at this footy club.
“But the net will certainly be cast far and wide. There might be someone coming off contract in 2016 who is unhappy where they are, there might be a club which has surplus requirements.”

to those "supporters" that have deathrided jarryd till now, as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for

I'm stoked. With Hayne gone we now have the money to strengthen the rest of the team. There is also now room for better leaders to step up and for all our other players to take some ownership.

Absolute blessing in disguise. You'll see.

How long do you think until we will see these benefits?

If he played at 105kg this year, and was a similar weight when he ran the 100m in 11 seconds, then it further enhances my point - a guy who is significantly heavier than world champion Bolt was "only" 2 seconds slower than his average time, despite not being a specialist in that area anymore.

I used it to highlight Hayne's athletic ability. He's a pure athlete. If he fails in the NFL, it won't be because of his physical attributes IMO.
"only" 2 seconds slower. over a short distance that is an absolute lifetime. hayne's speed, if he were to concentrate on just sprinting, wouldn't even qualify him for nationals in sprints. the nfl is stacked with guys who can run, or are very close to running, olympic sprint qualifying times.

hayne, and every other nrl player does speed training through the year. his absolute fastest wouldn't be much better than what he has shown. he is a great athlete by our domestic standards but the reality is that he looks a hell of a lot better than he is because he shows what he has against significantly lesser athletes. i honestly don't believe he has what it takes to be a good nfl player, especially making the transition this late in his career (similar to izzy when he went to afl). union is a whole different story. a guy like hayne would tear that game apart playing alongside izzy.

ps. this guy doesn't "specialise" in sprinting but as you can see by his numbers, is freakin fast and can jump

he's a guy that the nfl would look seriously at. hayne wouldn't come close to him on raw athletic performance. much like a lot of the ncaa guys that won't make it in nfl.

like i said somewhere else, it's all just discussion stuff right now (and personal opinions) but we won't really know too much until 6-12 months down the track.

By August next year Hayne is unlikely to have played a game in the NFL. Surely he has to first register for the draft, and either get picked or passed over (at which point he can sign for whoever he likes). Then the season starts in Sept 2015. I guess he might learn enough in his time on practice squad to find out if he is no chance at all.
yep. late april/early may will be a telling time.

he may wind up getting to the cfl and spat out like the rock did.

Never said our pack was like that but you under estimate our forwards. I'm saying if we can get a big pack together a fullback like Hoffman or Barba wouldn't be the worst option. And barba wouldn't be expensive. Brisbane want him gone and at the moment no one wants him. Eels could hold Broncos to paying some of the contract just for them to release him.

And I'm feeling fine. Sucks Hayne is gone but it presents and opportunity to spread the cap evenly and strengthen other positions especially if we can get a decent fullback or even Hopoate at the back. We will be right.

I don't underestimate their pack. You over estimate it comparing it to the pack that Barba played behind. Along with arguable the best coach in the NRL.

I am not even going to give you stick about Hayne. It sucks seeing him go. He was a freak of a player and will be missed in league. Shame he never had enough help to compete regularly.

I think your delusional if you think that Broncos will pay you to take a player they paid 300k to get released. It's not their style at all. They are much more likely to wait for him to screw up and sack him. Regardless of that if he was willing to leave "home" the crap he put us through over that lol. I would almost bank on the fact both the Eels and Raiders would pay his entire contract. They need something without Hayne parra are spooners all over again. Raiders are in urgent need of something though I think Austin is a good pick up.

Hoffman is solid though doesn't have the same qualities as Barba.

As an outsider looking in I would almost bank on Parra using Arthur, Hoppa and if true Watmough to get in B Stewarts ear. He is obviously not happy. If they added him with Choc they are not taking that big a step back of losing Hayne.

You would almost think unless Hayne kills it in NFL he will be back in 2 years tops which is about all B Stewart has left in him with Watmough... Money freed up in time.
