Even though I go for NZ, it's not hard to feel a little for SA. Big disadvantage.
The other thing D/L doesn't seem to take into consideration enough is that with only 43 overs to bat NZ doesn't necessarily need to consolidate wickets as much as you would in a 50 over game.
We saw the Windies make 250 in 30 odd overs in the quarter final just going for it from the start. They were never going to win and lost wickets in the process, but the less overs there are the more wickets become less of an issue for the batting side.
100% agree with the part in bold.
I understand the point some make about wanting to finish the match today where possible. However, at what point do you go from giving NZ the minimum 20 overs to chase the target, to using the reserve day and allowing NZ the maximum possible no. of overs the next day? Where do you draw that line? Why have a reserve day in that case if you aren't going to use it?
Nevertheless, South Africa currently on 226 with 3.5 overs to go. Whatever they end up getting, after the target is adjusted for D/L, will be very difficult to chase down in these conditions. In a lot of ways, that is an advantage to batting first
