Yeah just thought of him lol pretty obvious. Hayne must of been on huge money.

It's not necessarily what hayne was on but what he was going to be on that is freeing up room, remember he said when he left he said he walked away from signing the biggest deal in nrl history, that was 2016 onwards meaning we had to make sure we cleared cap space for it

Bit of a hefty read incoming but the TL;DR is that Parra are finally doing what the other tops clubs do with their cap - bring through good juniors, utilise journeymen effectively and retain internal talent for sub-market value as well as make efficient use of 3rd party deals.

There is no doubt that Hayne was exceedingly well paid and we are making full use of both the space he left us for 2015 as well as the projected space we set aside for him for 2016 and onwards but we are also just smarter about our cap in general after years of piss poor cap management.

We are steadily filtering in talented juniors (Junior Paulo, Tepai Moeroa, John Folau etc) and have unearthed a veritable gold mine of budget players in Manu Ma'u, Kenny Edwards, David Gower and Danny Wicks.

Ryan Morgan and Peni Terepo should be the last of vastly over-paid fringe first-graders (thanks Ricky :?) as they presumably leave the club at the end of the year while Hopoate is negotiating a supposedly fair deal as per the SMH today for what he brings to the team i.e. a quality centre that can cover wing and fullback.

Darcy Lussick and Chris Sandow are also off-contract and should they stay it will almost certainly be for a team-friendly salary which accounts for the majority of the players we paid hefty overs for in recent times.

While the idea that Brad Arthur is a super coach that gets players to come to Parra for significant unders is worthy of poking some fun at I do believe that he will get the existing roster at the Eels to stay for below the market price they would command. Just like you would expect from Robinson, Maguire or Cleary.

At the end of our recruiting drive for next year I expect plenty of neutrals to toss out the usual jibes about salary cap cheating but in truth it will be the culmination of a long, long clean out of our cap.

I honestly don't think AJ will be ready for fullback straight off the bat if he signs elsewhere. He'll need at least a year of practice (Similar to what the Roosters did with RTS and Minichiello where they'd interchange during games). In the trials this year when he was put at fullback he struggled at times and was very raw. He's a great winger and has already gotten that position down but still needs time to adjust to fullback. He will be a great fullback one day though that's for sure.

I reckon he would be fine. If he signed with us (rumoured) we have 2 other guys that could elevate the pressure off him in Hopoate and Robinson who will have a fair bit of experience between them at the back.

Eels playing the unlimited cap game again
Thats pretty rich coming from a Souths fan, thought April fools was yesterday.............

We've been beyond shitful for 5 years and put a side together stacked with local juniors and smart buys plus some stars and we are cheating the cap  If we are so are at least half the other clubs. We are finally utilising our massive junior base plus throw in bargain basement signings which have come up trumps like Gower, Mau, Semi, Edwards and Wicks add in not paying overs for average fringe first graders and not paying players to play at other clubs and you can see why we have plenty of space.

We did just lose the best player in the game FFS!!

Junior base? Most of the money is being tied up in Foran, Sandow, Watmough, Hoppa...now they're after Johnston, Scott, SKD...that's the majority of your cap right there in 7 players (more so when Foran's and Watmough's contracts are absolutely massive).

You still have to form a squad of 25. Be interesting to see how they're planning on paying another 18 players with what would be left.

Tepai, Paulo, Pauli, Falou, Goodall, Lavaka, Davis, Zack Docker Clay, Prichard, Terepo, Morgan, even Semi have all come through from harold Mathews, SG ball or the U20's. Most of these blokes will be in the top 25 in the years to come. Who do you think we are the Bulldogs?????

Same diff I guess, they planned on having a lot of cap tied up on him. Anyway good for Parra i hope they do sign him. I like the thought of young talented players moving from the city clubs to a westie club.

Tupou is as good as gone.

With Maloney, RTS and Fergo still to retain for 2016 there's no way we'll be able to afford Toops... who will probably get 500k thrown at him but some stupid club.

A key to Premiership success is dirt cheap wingers. Souffs showed it last year and we did the year before. As did Melbourne in 2012 and so on. They can be quality players, but you don't want them on much money as that needs to go to the spine and forwards.

We'll recycle next year... SKD and Toops out on good money. Joe Burgess, Nene MacDonald and Latrell Mitchell in there place for half the money.

Burgess wouldn't be on chump change, he won't be breaking the bank, but he would be on decent coin.

I agree with regards to wingers. There are exceptions where you pay good coin, someone like Yow Yeh for example pre leg snap. Hoffman had he remained at the Broncos happily playing on the wing I would happily see the club fork out 300-400k for. I guess the cheap winger thing is why we see so many great wingers want to play fullback for a decent pay day.

All those players you still have to pay though and the basic wage is a lot higher than it used to be. Realistically your average first grader (i.e. the bottom end of your squad) will receive 200-300k at least now. It'd be more for some of the blokes you mentioned, maybe a bit less for some of the blokes promoted from the juniors that may still be on a small contract...but it still averages out to needing at least a million dollars for say 4 of those blokes.

I'm not saying Parra don't have juniors. My point was that you can't use juniors as a reason for being able to buy so many players when the majority of the salary cap is, or will be taken up by blokes that aren't juniors anyway.

So how much does everyone think Alex Johnston would be looking for? I reckon he would almost be a straight swap for Ryan Morgan cap wise. From what I've been told by someone involved with the Wenty club, Morgan is on ridiculous coin. Another beneficiary of some diabolical retention decisions on the past.

Lmao what?

Another case of:
Player at the club "playing for next to nothing"
Player left the club "was on ridiculous money"

Don't worry about it dude. They take digs at playing rosters calling them crap, spoon contenders etc like they have done with the Eels, but the second they start signing a couple of players those same "plodders" are suddenly superstars and the team is cheating the cap. They want it both ways, they are the bisexuals of league fans and can't decide between the sausage or the taco.
