Is There Anything Good About Melbourne?

The public transport is excellent, live music scene's great, good restaurants etc.

For natural beauty you're going to have to leave the city though, the Yarra river is gross compared to Sydney harbour and their beaches simply don't compare to what you'd get in the Eastern Suburbs, Shire and Northern Beaches here. There's spectacular scenery around outside Melbourne though, and Phillip Island, Mornington and the Torquay coast have some pretty great waves.

I totally like sensible responses like this and others.

Some of the others can keep their childish bickering to themselves.

FFS...I asked a legitimate question. What da farq is so good about Melbourne??

Relax princess, just because I don't like the city you live in is no reason to get personal :D

Coming from someone whose location is Belmore.

Were you conceived in the Westside Studios were you?

That's the former brothel next to the pub that got firebombed years ago.

Been there a few times...the best sort was the bitch pushing a vacuum cleaner around.

EDIT: I've just stooped to the same level as BF. Sorry folks.

Belmore is my spiritual location and always will be. The impenetrable fortress of doom...

Played numerous rugby league matches there as a kid, for both Riverwood United and Canterbury-Bankstown Jersey Flegg.

When I was bored, I used to count the train carriages going past on the western end of the ground.

The answer is always subjective. If like BF,you're adamant its crap despite giving no genuine reasons why, then nothing can convince you otherwise.

If you're open to it without being a wanker, and give it a go, you will find it is one of the very best places in the country.

As i said previously. Its only an hour or so drive to most of the great scenery, coast, ski fields etc and theres the social life as well.

Best bits of Melbourne. ...

The relaxed cafe scene on the weekends, with all the lanes in the city, or head to St Kilda.

The absolutely amazing live music scene

The fact that you can get a great feed at any time of the day in every pub I've been to. None of this bullshit " kitchen is only open until 1:30 pm". And if you want the NRL put on the 2nd screen. ....no dramas.
Melbourne pubs
Code:
make you feel welcome and comfortable

Free tram around the city centre.

Easy access from the city to major stadia.

Melb has a "vibe" that Sydney and Brissie lack.
Perth sort of has it, but beer is too expensive there.
Hobart definately has it, but Melbourne wins hands down.

Get yourself down to Tourkay pub in the off season. Best bunch of locals ive encountered in a tourist town

Been here for 18 years...avoid Springvale...pretty rough and slumsville.

Mornington is good but quite far out from the CBD...

The good things about Melbourne:

Lots of sport to choose from (NRL, AFL, Tennis, Horses, Soccer etc) - Victorians love their sport and will turn up to anything.

Food and Coffee - the restaurants are great and reasonably priced.

Public Transport - okay but not great and not reliable.

The bad things about Melbourne:

AFL - Victorians are obsessed.

Trains don't run to all suburbs.

The motorways are congested - 24/7.

Things Sydney's CBD has over Melbourne...

It's a lot smaller. Now... may appear like a bad thing, but it's not. Sydney is taller, Melbourne is wider. Sydney has beautiful sky scrapers are architecture, where as Melbournes tall building don't shine a light to Sydneys.

In Sydney, you can start at one end of the CBD, Pyrmont or Haymarket, and end up at the other end, Circular Quay or The Rocks in 30 mins by foot. Melbourne, to get from one end of the CBD to the other, you have to catch a cab. It's not as centralised as Sydney, therefore, requires a lot more to get from one point to another.

Whenever I'm down there for work, I need to stock up on cab charges.

While the food and cafes may be nice, it's not like Sydney doesn't have any... they are absolutely everywhere here... everywhere. Every suburb has a bunch of them, not to mention the hundreds (possibly thousands) in the CBD.

Another thing that Sydney has over Melbourne... (that's actually going on right now as I type of this post)...Vivid!

Even if Melbourne were to get this festival of life, colour, culture and radiance, it would not be nearly as good as the show here due to the landmarks that Sydney has... which brings me to another point... landmarks. Sydney is known to be one of the architectural capitals of the world. We have 3 world reknown buildings. When people think of Australia, they think of the Harbour Bridge, The Opera House, CentrePoint Tower, and even the Great Barrier Reef in QLD... I highly doubt they think about the MCG or Yarra river.

In all seriousness, as nice as Melbourne may be, it's not in the same league as Sydney, and never will be.

Sydney is simply... better!

You can easily walk across Melbourne's cbd in 30 minutes. To say Sydney is more centralised is ridiculous. Parramatta, chatswood, they are almost like a second cbd

BF just announced that he's not just a moron, but a dumb, lazy and ignorant moron.

The architecture comment is utter BS. Docklands modern architecture is amazing, while there are still a huge number of old vintage buildings in the heart of the CBD.

It is piss easy to walk from one end of the Melbourne CBD to the other in 30 mins. I do it almost daily.

And finally he mentions one event with pretty pictures that Sydney has that Melbourne doesn't. What about the other 360 odd days of the year?

Sydney is fine, but to suggest its better than the Melbourne CBD is utter nonsense. Melbourne and Sydney are near identical, Melbourne is marginally better.

The only people who would make such claims that Sydney is miles better are idiots who hate everything Victorian because they don't like AFL.

AFL is shit. I never watch it or talk about it and have got on perfectly fine here for over 6 years

I'd say it has changed a lot since your experience.

Melbourne has a good, positive vibe & it's clean and safe. Relatively easy to get around & find parking. Easy place to escape - 10 mins in any direction and you'll find paddocks and cows.

Great old architecture - even out in the suburbs. A lot of character has been retained and a lot of the official/govt buildings have a sense of grandeur. Great new architecture as well - especially the sports precinct.

Fantastic sporting precinct + there's also Albert Park.

Plenty of good pubs & restaurants. Fantastic golf courses.

St Kilda is a shithole - full of meth heads & weirdos. Avoid. It's easy enough to.

One thing I don't like is the trams. OK in the city centre where they are a novelty and maybe even useful for some people, But out of the CBD they are a menace. Hundreds of cars & people delayed up and down thoroughfares for these outdated eyesores. The overhead wires and permanent trip hazards detract from the place. You can see where tramlines have been planned - wide avenues with trams down the middle - and in these places they are probably OK. At least they are not a problem. But when someone has just laid tracks down existing lanes they are a joke that you can't believe made it out of the failed design stage.

I was never the biggest fan of Melbourne - I didn't dislike the place, but it felt a bit like anywhere else, just had good sporting events. Having worked there quite a bit I've come to appreciate & like Melbourne. I'd have no hesitation moving there.

Brisbane or Adelaide - different story.

From what the missus told me last night, she's probably got the job in Mornington.

Personally, I'd prefer to be out of suburbia chaos, so all looks fine. Now to look for a house to buy.

Just a short drive to nice places like Portsea and around the corner is Phillip Island.

Oh to see open ocean again!!
