A young 6 will just put them in the same boat as you guys. They need an experience 5/8 to compliment Elgey, sadly Maloney fits that description and is a goal kicker.

I wouldn't be surprised if he left us for the Titans with all the money they've got spare.

Does that much talked about NRL warchest to be used to top up salaries to prevent players leaving the NRL apply to ESL or only to potential code-hoppers?

They would still have to offer huge money for mine and do many of their clubs have that sort of money considering they often draw smaller crowds than the nrl?Most of the top nrl rep players now are on $600k-$1million in a couple of cases,so you would think esl would have to offer $1.2 to $1.5million a year before a real top liner would look at going there.

I doubt any of the absolute top stars like Inglis etc will go, but we could see clubs making plays for the guys just below that like Gallen, Cronk etc. To be honest I think the rule will probably be used more to keep top ESL players like Sam Tomkins in the comp, but expect to see a bunch of media/agent talk when the major NRL stars are up for contract renewals and potentially driving their market value up.

Maybe although I still think when you look at Cronk hes probably on $600-650k from the storm but then you add $30,000 a game for origin,money for playing for Australia and any personals sponsors and 3rd party deals he would probably have and I think he wouldnt be far off $1million a season all up.It would take a lot to get him to the uk imo, and given that even the big clubs there only average 12-15,000 home crowds where are all the clubs going to get the money from for these marquee players?

So the Chooks get Paea and Matagi pre the 30 June sale? Is that correct? Even with their wall to wall rep squad, and the best young talent raped from every other NRL clubs junior systems, they STILL have money left over in their cap!!! Amazing... and no alarm bells ring...ever..:sarcasm:

3 key factors;

1) Martin Kennedy's top 25 spot has been freed up

2) We haven't used anyone outside of our top 25 which is where the bulk of match payments will fall under

3) Even though they'll essentially be at the club for half the season (more if we make the fianls) we'll only be paying them for 5 months (not the 12 most contracts are) given contracts roll over on November 1.

There's really nothing too amazing or flash about it when you actually sit down and think about it, those alarm bells you're hearing might just be the echos of empty space between your ears.

THE Knights are on the verge of re-signing former Kiwi Test enforcer Jeremy Smith to a one-year contract extension.

The 35-year-old lock was also considering offers from the Dragons, with whom he won the 2010 NRL premiership, and Sydney Roosters. Smith reportedly knocked back Newcastle’s initial bid of about $150,000 last month, but the Knights increased their offer after Joey Leilua exercised a get-out clause from the final year of his contract, which freed up space under their salary cap.

The Newcastle Herald was told on Thursday night that Smith was ‘‘likely to agree to terms’’ for another year, which would almost certainly see out the end of his NRL career. Smith, who joined the Knights from Cronulla at the end of 2012, was considered a priority retention target after fellow hard man Beau Scott announced he would leave the club at the end of the year to join Parramatta.

The veteran forward has missed the past two games because of a sternum injury which is likely to keep him out of their game against Canberra at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
