Kaysa is also a good defender. I'd say they're about the same in attack but Kaysa is quicker so he may get the jump ahead of IDG at this stage, he's also a lot younger and we may go with him because he may have more of a future with us.

I don't think Kayser is especially good in defence. I think he's fearless and tries hard (like Peats) but I wouldn't say he's all that effective. He's very small.

Because they obviously see Hoppa as more marketable and he is a clean living, god fearing Christian who will not be any trouble and most likely be a positive influence on others at the club. He will attract bums on seats.

There are many more reasons why clubs want certain players besides their playing ability which I would have thought you would have already known.

Agreed. Also - as hard as it is for some to understand - coaches sometimes make mistakes about the potential of certain players. Hasler might actually think Hopoate is a better player or has more potential than Hiku. That's a mistake right there.

The one we can afford?

Don't assume we're just going to chase the best player in any given circumstance. The way we structure our cap might mean we have no room for a $500k (for example) outside back, but do have room for a $250k (for example) outside back. It's not as simple as filling every slot in your 17 with the best available player at every position.

We might have budgeted $1.5M (for example) for first choice halves, which could mean that Norman is priced out of our team beyond this year. There are good reasons why you might choose to sign the less competent player when two are available.

:lol::lol: Captain obvious trying to sound like an expert.

Most forwards will have to play all their minutes in one stint, including the starters. That probably means teams will be able to stack fewer monsters in the 17. I agree we don't know how things will turn out but the fact we have four specialist hookers in our squad tells me the coaching staff are looking at carrying one on the bench.

What it tells me is that, because Peats has shown that he could be injury-prone, and because De Gois isn't getting any younger, we're probably just covering for possible injuries to our hooker.

OR Hiku might (if given the choice), want to sign for Parra instead of the Dogs.
Some (one?) around here seem to think only their opinion is valid, and present it as fa t, with a sweeping disregard to other potential factors.
Player salaries go way beyond simple market forces.

The desire to play for one club over another is itself a market force. I'm sure Hopoate and Lussick would rather have stayed at Manly but money talks.

As far as the validity of opinion goes, don't be offended that I present a counterpoint - people are talking like we have a wealth of outside back options coming up who will all be cheap just because they are being released from their contracts. Interest from other clubs will always stop good players from being cheap. Pointing that out might make me captain obvious but some posters here are clearly ignoring the obvious. That doesn't make me an expert - it just makes me smarter than everyone except lingard.

I guess we'll know when the team is named for round one.

Kaysa agree- Puts his all in but a little small so not that dominant in defense

Hoppa can play anywhere-So can i but not well. Wing or centre are his only options. And really he is a slow winger and not exactly a powerhouse carting it up.

Dogs need a fullback? Morris killed it last year.

Perret would be quite cheap so doubt moving him on would free up a lot. Also i doubt many clubs would be as intersted in Perret as they would Lafai.

Hiku - Why would he demand 350k? WHen Manly signed him i doubt they paid that much. I reckon 250k tops.Im sure he is worth 350k but i reckon you might get him cheap for his first year-Or should i say cheaper then he is worth. Hiku proabbly wants too leave cause he knows he can get more then what he signed for due to form.

When Manly signed him he hadn't achieved what he's done now. To beat out other clubs to his signature, I don't think there are many but probably 1 or 2 more we'll have to offer that much especially now as he's an international and can cover anywhere in the backline essentially. To get him to achieve his true potential he needs to stick to one position, with the outside back depth he won't be able to achieve that at Manly.

He is 88kg only 4 less then smith but the same size as Farrah.

Granville is 85kg, Rein is also 85kg, Ennis is 87kg, luke is 89kg, Ballin is 88kg, Segeyaro is 84, Friend is 85, these are just a few of the starting hookers for 2015. There were a couple at 92 kg but most under 90.

Pritchard really isn't that small compared to other hookers, his probably Normal/average size.

Phil Gould and Nick Politis could go to war for Jarryd Hayne’s signature
November 18, 2015 10:00pm
PHIL ROTHFIELDSPORTS EDITOR-AT-LARGEThe Daily Telegraph

The likely prospect of superstar Jarryd Hayne returning to the NRL next year has put lifelong friends and rugby league icons Phil Gould and Nick Politis on a collision course.

And standing between them in an uncomfortable position is Hayne’s veteran agent Wayne Beavis, who counts the Roosters supremo and Panthers general manager among his closest mates.

Both Gould and Politis have confirmed to the Daily Telegraph they will bid for Hayne’s signature should the former Parramatta Eels champion pull the pin on his stalled NFL career at the San Francisco 49ers.

It would ignite the biggest chequebook war in rugby league history.

Both Gould and Politis have the connections and contacts at the big end of town to get the required third party sponsorship and then back-end a contract that would make Hayne the highest paid footballer in Australia in any of footy codes.

Not that either are yet convinced Hayne will be coming home. At least not publicly.

“My understanding is that Jarryd will not be giving up on his NFL dreams,” Gould told the Daily Telegraph.

“Nor should he. What he has achieved in 12 short months is nothing short of extraordinary. Our game should be so proud of Jarryd.

“If, at some time in the future, he decides to return to the NRL, rest assured Panthers will be in the queue to have a chat with him”.

If Gould can convince Hayne to join the Panthers, the plan would be to play him at fullback and switch Matt Moylan to five-eighth.

Both clubs want Hayne as a marketing initiative as much as a footballer.

The increase in sponsorship, crowds, membership and overall exposure would be worth the millions it will cost them on a contract.

Politis says Roosters coach Trent Robinson is still planning to go with Blake Ferguson at fullback next year while grooming boom rookie Latrell Mitchell to eventually take over.

“We don’t even know if Jarryd’s going to be available,” Politis said.

“Like Gus, we’re keeping an eye on it. We’d love to have him but so would a lot of other clubs.”

Having lost Sonny Bill Williams, James Maloney, Anthony Minichiello and Roger Tuivasa Sheck in the last two years, the Roosters are not under as much salary cap pressure as some might believe.

Also working in their favour is that Politis gave Hayne a loan car from one of his automotive businesses when he was last in Australia.

The fact the South Sydney Rabbitohs were able to squeeze Sam Burgess under the cap on a $1 million-a-year contract shows both the Panthers and Roosters could do the same thing.

If he stays in the NFL, Hayne faces the prospect of not playing again until August in next year’s trials.

Most believe he will make a decision on his future when he returns to Australia for Christmas.
