Lock over the last 5 years has evolved into pretty much a 3rd prop over the last 5 years, think of guys like gallen, lolo, eastwood, taupau, myles etc. With a reduced interchange, smaller more durable locks may become the fashion again. With the way Tom was being dominated in tackles at the 9s is cause for concern, if that doesn't change in the trials, it may lead to Sam or Grevsmuhl partnering with tyrell for round 1 until george gets back

yeah there's nothing wrong with using the lock as a second 5/8, as long as he is good in defense, and sutto is. you don't need the lock to be a third prop. sam can play 80 mins and when george needs a rest, tom could come on. grevs would make good metres from the second row too.

I think Sam is one of those players that will benefit from the change due to his mobility. The players you mentioned don't have the same lateral ability as Sam.

I do think however that Carter will benefit from the reduced interchange and would make an awesome ball playing second rower.

My best team at the moment is;

1. Greg Inglis (c)
2. Alex Johnston
3. Kirisome Auva'a
4. Bryson Goodwin
5. Aaron Gray
6. Luke Keary
7. Adam Reynolds
8. George Burgess
9. Cam McInnes
10. Dave Tyrrell
11. Kyle Turner
12. John Sutton
13. Sam Burgess

14. Damien Cook
15. Jason Clark
16. Chris Grevsmuhl
17. Tom Burgess

- GI, AJ and speak for themselves and are our two best backs. Very unlikely they will be dropped.

- Goodwin, Auva'a Gray have performed well in the rest of the positions but will be under pressure to perform from the likes of Oldfield, Hunt, Olive, and Nielsen, which is exactly what we need to ensure we have our best possible backs on the field.

- Reyno appears to be safe but Keary will have a lot of pressure on him from Cody, who should definitely be our 5/8 come round 1. Of course there is hype around Cody but his defence is yet to be established, so Keary will need to perform well in that area as well. Definitely an interesting competition to see who gets the 6

- Our starting props should be Tyrrell and George. I know the verdict is out on Dave, but he is a very solid front rower who does a lot of dirty work and has great handling and has great defence, and with pressure from Tom, Clarky, Brown and Musgrove he will be doing his best. Tom will be doing his best to take his brother's starting spot, which happened a few times last year.

- The battle of the hookers is gonna be a good one, because no matter who gets the no.9 jersey, we know they're gonna perform, and we only just got a taste of it this weekend. My preference is to have McInnes start and go through the motions, then put Cooky on when the opposition is tired so he can capitalise using his blistering speed and direct running. It's gonna be a great combination I reckon.

- Sutto and Sam will definitely have two positions in the back row. The right side second row position is up for grabs, with Turner, Grevs and Carter contending for it. At the moment i'd have Turner starting with Grevs coming on for impact. I can't elaborate how important impact is going to be with the new interchange rules, and just in general.

- So many times in the past we had strong starting sides with benches filled with workhorses that wouldn't really be able to capitalise on the work the starting side had done. If we have most of our workhorses on at the beginning of games, the impact players can make their mark at the end. Tom and George are a direct swap, as are Clarky and Tyrrell, while Grevs and Cook bring impact in for Turner and McInnes.

the main reason i'd have carter over mcinnes is because carter is able to play second row/lock too

Carter isn't exactly a hooker though. Much better in the second row.

McInnes can play back row too and looks to have bulked up and can take a hit or two. He's been used there before as well

i've seen carter play dummy half and he looks alright there.

if madge uses players like turner and grevs in the second row, i don't think those two would be setting up many tries through passing and kicking, but sutton does from second row. sometimes he puts a good kick through to set up a try, or by timing a pass perfectly. if he plays second row then he will basically only be on one side of the field. if he plays lock he can pop up on either side of the field. i think it would make the team better in attack and not so predictable in attack, and the go forward and defense would still be as good

True that but I think Sutton is on the left side to help out Keary, whereas Reynolds can control the right side by himself.

Personally i'd rather have Sam roaming about than being confined to one area than have Sutton roaming around. I think it suits Sutton having a side he can call his own as opposed to being given more responsibility.

R95 mate you have the same team as me. Great minds think alike.

I just read it actually R95. I knew it'd be quality so I couldn't wait to read it.

Brilliant post mate. Best post in this thread. It's full of truth telling at its best.

Best post of the whole off season actually mate.

Completely agree R95. Spot on.

That's exactly how I see it.

Madge will see it this way too.

Yeah I do. There would have been so many. Also coming from the other side of the field and stopping what should have been tries from a grubber kicks. But Sam somehow forces the ball dead. It's great to watch.

Remember the try saving tackle on Moa right on half time in the 2014 prelim???

I'll never forget it. That's one of my favourites.

I think we could go on about it all day:lol::lol:

Re the backs I guess it is what it is. We just have to get behind the boys. I'm concerned a bit with the backs but I know the boys will do their best. I want to see committment.

Obviously we can't lose GI to injury. AJ is a very good finisher and gas very good speed.

Auva'a will go well I reckon. Obviously Auva'a isn't a D. Walker though.

Goodwin is solid and gives his all without being that match winner.

A. Gray is a good finisher. Injury prone unfortunately as we know.

The other guys must improve and work hard on their games eg: Hunt, Oldfield, Olive.

As for Nielsen I don't expect much from him tbh with you.

Also we have signed Samisoni Langi on a second tier contract. It will be interesting to see how he goes with Norths. If needed we could use him in the backs if he's playing well for the Bears. I think he's only 22 or 23 still too.

Agree here--he has shown some classy glimpses of ballplaying!

He will have to have the leash loosened though to try some off-loads.

I expect him to improve this year. Last year he got a taste of first grade and will hopefully have learnt a few things.

For Round 1 as there is no George I have Tom starting and Brown on the bench.

8. Tom
9. McInnes
10. Tyrrell
11. Turner
12. Sutton
13. Sam

14. Cook
15. Clark
16. Grevsmuhl
17. Brown

18. Carter
19. Oldfield/Hunt (not sure yet actually)
20. Musgrove
