Both teams named today.

2017 All Stars squads announced
National Rugby League | December 14 2016 10:02AM

A host of players will make their World and Indigenous All Starsdebut in Newcastle next year when the two teams meet for the seventh Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars occasion.

Jarryd Hayne, Latrell Mitchell, Jake Friend, Jack Bird, Moses Mbye and Adam Elliott were just some of the players named today by World All Stars coach Mal Meninga and Indigenous All Stars coach Laurie Daley ahead of the game on Friday 10 February at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Meninga said he was excited by the opportunity to coach the World All Stars team for the first time, with many of the World All Stars players also new to the team and experience.

"The All Stars match is a fantastic way to kick off the rugby league season in Australia and I'm looking forward to the chance to be part of the build-up," Meninga said.

Daley, who will coach his fourth consecutive Indigenous All Stars team, said he was pleased to see the game being shared with a new audience and fan-base outside of Queensland for the first time in the match's history.

"The All Stars is a wonderful celebration for players and fans alike and I am sure that the people of Newcastle and further afield will get right behind the chance to see some of the best Indigenous and non-Indigenous players on-field," Daley said.

The Women's All Stars teams will be announced in the new year and further information about the week-long All Stars celebration will also be available in the new year at www.nrl.com/allstars.

The Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars match will be played on Friday 10 February at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.

It's embarrassing that the "world" team are basically all from three countries but have the word "heritage" slapped on them to make it seem like it's really diverse. And even then there's only one pom this year so it's more like two countries. And merkins bitched about city-country.

What a load of rubbish. Just because they live here doesn't mean they don't identify with their family heritage.

"Identify with family heritage" sums it up. Code for not really from those countries but the NRL will use it to make this shit look like a "world" team. The likes of Hayne and Trbojevic and Mbye all have Australian "heritage" too but no mention of that, just the "foreign" heritage mentioned. Either get some players in who are actually from other countries or stop calling it a world all stars team. The term "all stars" is already a massive stretch so there's actually nothing about that title that is relevant. Yet a development tool that made money for bush footy was scrapped.

Yawwwwn.

If any game on the RL calendar deserves to die, it's this one.

If we need an Indigenous game then have them play against someone who actually cares, like an NZ Maori team.

Have to agree that 'World Allstars' is a stupid term to be using for this concept. It should've jus' been left as 'NRL Allstars' seeing as that's where all the players are from. But when the likes of Smith, Croker, Graham & Shaun Johnson aren't in the side, kinda makes a bit of a joke of the whole idea that was initially put forward & either term they use to describe what the team is

PS. CvC was a way better concept, but they found a way to screw that up & make it fold. History shall repeat!

Seems like they wanted to end it last season but there was an uproar about how much it meant to the indigenous players.
So rather than scrap it there just going to kill it off slowly until nobody cares anymore.

So out of the 40 players named today, how many do we reckon will actually front for the game?

That world all star team is dead set embarrassing! You can't call that a world all star team! What did they do just pick the players out of a hat?

I'm surprised they didn't pick another Pom just so they could say Turner was of Jamaican heritage and claim another country.
They could have even named one of the Aussies who were rumoured to play for England at the 4 nations and said they were English heritage lol.
What a joke.

I was saying to my Eels bretheren in the Parra Forum that Neil Henry will be shitting bricks during this game... Imagine if Hayne and Ash Taylor both did their ACL's in this mickey mouse game... I'd be surprised if both end up playing... Hayne might be able to get patenity leave....

Moses Mbye 'African" heritage lol.

They are really clutching at straws now. Why didn't they just name the country, being Gambia, rather than the whole continent? It is a wonder they didn't put European heritage next to Trbojevic or Asian heritage next to Mitchell Moses. Perhaps they believe the whole of Africa has one distinct culture?

I guess that attitude does fit in nicely with the inherently racist concept that is the all stars. The sooner this dies the better and we can concentrate on making a real difference to indigenous people by engaging their communities more effectively and bringing NRL games to them.

Yes! An Australian Indigenous vs New Zealand Maori game would be amazing, for the War Dance vs Haka alone:

Why couldn't they fly in a guy from France? That would at least make the World part seem a little genuine. With a World Cup next year what better way to gain experience. Its more Australian than world

They need Monsieur rosenfeld on the selection panel. If it was up to him, there would be 19 frenchies and Jordan turner.
