North Sydney Bears believe they can change 'cycle of failure' of Gold Coast

The North Sydney Bears believe their revolutionary dual-city model proposal for the Gold Coast Titans can end the "cycle of failure" for sporting franchises on the holiday strip.

The Bears are one of the parties attempting to buy the Titans in a revolutionary move that would bring one home game back to North Sydney Oval each season. A consortium of business people is providing the financial backing that will finally provide the stability missing during rugby league's various incarnations on the Gold Coast.

The Bears have been tight-lipped about their plans out of respect to the bid process, although chairman Perry Lopez granted a rare interview to outline their vision for the Gold Coast.

"We offer in an innovative model that would end the cycle of failure on the Gold Coast for sporting teams," Lopez said.

"We offer the fans of the Gold Coast a chance to build a stable, sustainable NRL club.

"We want to work in partnership with the existing Gold Coast management group.

"The Bears would bring to the table a network of 230,000 fans. We can drive another 10,000 members and a group of sponsors committed to driving the success of the franchise."

Under the proposal, the team would be rebadged as the Gold Coast Bears in a move that would allow disenfranchised North Sydney fans to reconnect with the game.

"Let's be clear, this is a Gold Coast team," Lopez said.

"We would play one game at North Sydney Oval and the remainder at Cbus Stadium. That would give North Sydney Bears fans a chance to revisit North Sydney Oval in a heritage match against Manly in what would be an iconic match for that round. The massive hype and lead up to that would be something the game has not seen for a long time.

"It's a great story for Bears fans, but it's an even greater story for anyone who wants to see league thrive on the Gold Coast for many years to come.

"It brings new life to a key rugby league market that has been allowed to decline over the years.

"There are 230,000 additional fans that would give this franchise a national presence. With that comes greater revenue and corporate opportunities, which will help us to attract and keep the best players on the Gold Coast.

"That sense of history, pride and community would build on the great work that's been done already in the region with one of the game's great national clubs.

"It's a new model, something the game has not seen before."

No mention of a game on the CC, unfortunately. The CC people would feel pretty disappointed given how they supported the Bears there a few years ago.

Searle was competent,local and respected. They might have all those attributes but I feel to change the titans to the bears will be there downfall. As I right this Greg (media tart) Florimo is going to be on channel 9 footy show next. Wonder what he is going to talk about?
Sometimes it is best to be quiet rather than forcing a opinion on people.

I also find it interesting these numbers that the bears keep peddling? Who is there supporter base? Where is it and who is it? They have left the central coast so it's roosters territory now. So the bears supporters are the immediate north Sydney area/catchment and the over 50yr old bear supporters? Hardly a massive base if you ask me. Only spot for the bears now is Adelaide.

Agree, He also became owner of the titans on the back of an impressive business history, but as we all know he was out of his depth. Do the bears have any backers and fans left after roosters central coast move?

If the NRL are genuinely concerned about the game in Australias largest city , the Bears should be located on the Central Coast. Its a good fit locality wise and will consolidate existing rivalries and creat a new one with the Knights. Its growing and consolidating rugby league in areas that are being neglected by the NRL for way too long.

Absolutely. The dilutting of clubs in NSW is a mistake courtesy of superleague ear agreement which is proving disastrous over time. More clubs , Yes. Should be a 20 team comp right now!

I actually agree that CC was the best fit for the Bears and I would love to see them back in the comp. But I think that boat has probably sailed and sadly, it's not going to happen.

The loss of the Bears, Reds and Crushers was the worst part of the peace deal.

B2, NZ2 and Perth are all more important than a CC fairytale coming true.

Gosford is outside of Sydney. What it does is consolidate the game and increase rivalries with more local derbies. The mistake being made is that diluting the code sends a negative message to neutral fans and many longtime fans.. Additional clubs are the way to go. Otherwise the mess continues.

I would add the Central Coast Bears so a 9 team top flight presence would occur. Eventually these 9 teams would be part of a metropolitan only relegation and promotion conference . Eventually a 20 team comp would be good with another Brisbane club, West Coast team and another area that shows promise.

You jest.they do turn up. The two local derbies that would be instant success are Newcastle v Central Coast Bears and Manly Warringah v Central Coast Bears. Plus you regain lost Bears fans and the influential business district of North Sydney. It makes sense but this is easier said than done.

Eventually a 20 team comp would be good with another Brisbane club, West Coast team and another area that shows promise.

I'd drop 4 Sydney teams, bring in bears in Gosford and expand the game with big city clubs, nsw cup can be second division for the small suburban clubs.
