He is probably the quickest of our middle forwards, and doesn't miss tackles. He just tends to offer little in attack - he has line breaking ability but for the typical middle forward run against numbers he lacks leg drive and always seems to lose the wrestle. Plus there is the issue with his hands.

But he was excellent last night. I'm referring to the game against Newcastle and not anything else.

Was he a bit disappointing in other areas?

On ninemsn there’s a link to an article with the BA quotes about French, with the heading ‘Arthur warns star, he expects more’.... and of course there is a photo of Hayne accompanying it.

Matterson wouldnt get near out first grade side.
And with Gower,Niakuore,Stone,T rex all battling in Wenty for a first grade spot I am unsure he would be a huge upgrade on any of them.

FoxSports Rnd 1 team prediction

Eels
1. Bevan French
2. Josh Hoffman
3. Michael Jennings
4. Jarryd Hayne
5. Kirisome Auva’a
6. Corey Norman
7. Mitchell Moses
8. Tim Mannah
9. Cameron King
10. Daniel Alvaro
11. Manu Ma’u
12. Brad Takairangi
13. Nathan Brown

14. Suaia Matagi
15. Kane Evans
16. Kenny Edwards
17. Beau Scott

Unavailable: Clint Gutherson (knee)

Eels notes: Clint Gutherson is at long odds to be fit for the Eels’ season opener as he recovers from an ACL injury. Bevan French will get the nod at fullback, while Jarryd Hayne will slot into the centres at the expense of Brad Takairangi who has been training in the backrow. Cameron Kinglooks to have grabbed first opportunity to nail down the 80-minute hooker role, while Brad Takairangu’s switch to the back row puts Tepai Moeroa’s position in the club’s best 17 in serious jeopardy..

I like the fact if we have an injury in the backline , pretty much Taka can cover

Allows us to play 4 forwards on the bench, all quality as well
