I think we will have a good season and make the top 5, in spite of Mary being our coach, because we now have a very good pack, a very good pair of halves and a fullback who has speed and can ball play. I even think we are the 4th best chance of winning the comp this year after Easts, Melbourne and Nth Qld.

I also think that Brisbane will struggle to make the top 8 and they have got Bennett, who many on this site still think is the Messiah. Bennett doesn't have a good pack at his disposal, he has one of the worst halfbacks in the comp and a 5/8 who needs a dominate game manager halfback beside him. I think Milford should have stayed at fullback, where he had more room to move and could roam around the field and inject himself, when he liked. I also think that Boyd is one of if not the most over rated players in the comp. I would take Dufty over Boyd this year.I know that most readers will laugh at my last statement. A coach is only as good as the cattle he has to work with and think year I believe that it will show with our rise and Brisbane's fall.
Nowhere bear 4th best chance.
- Parra have the team to wipe us out, and Mary is Brad Arthur’s bitch; Arthur basically showed the entire league how to beat us last year, twice!
- Cronulla have a solid forward pack, strike across the park and dirty tactics.

We will be fighting it out for the bottom half of the 8 with Penrith, Manly, and probably Tigpies/Knights/Dogs.

Not too long ago I considered you one of the better posters on the forum but you've definitely lost the plot.

Sad!

I think we are strong in the halves and forwards and the centers have the potential on paper but fail to transfer that to the game.
Wings are slow and will not score trys from any great distance.
The bench and use of it will be the same as last year.
I still think we will make the eight but if McIdiot doesn't look at our weakness and try some of our youngsters we will struggle against the likes of the Storm and a couple of others.
We need a coach to be able to make a different game plan or start making choices to replace our centers and wingers wingers.
I don't think we have a coaching panel that can do that.
It's time for a cleanout of all the coaches and get someone else.

Interesting. Go to the one eyed forum and you'll find BA is not as popular as you think.

Nah, it'll be the Toronto option, a journeyman (Nichols), but this time with NO NRL games under his belt FFS. Mann, Lomax or Field wouldn't get a shot - too left field ha!

I know that Mary is very disliked by so many on this forum, including myself. But the only way that Mary gets sacked now, is for us to have an unsuccessful season, which would mean either missing the top 8 or just scrapping into the top 8.

If I have to choose between us having a successful season and Mary being our coach next year, or us having an unsuccessful season and Mary being sacked, then I choose for us to have a successful season and Mary being our coach again next year.

I want to know the the Mary haters on this site choose? lol
We are so starved of anything remotely resembling success that almost everyone will go with your choice.

It's Stockholm Syndrome. We have been kidnapped by mediocrity for so long that we're starting to grow fond of our captor. Hey, at least they feed us occasionally! If we escape we might die out there! So many unknown dangers on the other side of that tiny fortified window. Inside these four walls life is predictable, cosy, safe.

I say: escape. It might hurt a bit crawling through those bars but the world beyond them is full of joyous possibilities. Maybe even - gasp - a premiership.

Lots of Flagellants on the Forum - as u say, beaten into submission

If Lafai/ Nene have shockers again - and not dropped - and the captor's sycophants on here fawn over the status quo then one understands how revolutions begin.

Lafai arrived from the Dogs in a fragile and delicate state apparently, so I'm really thinking that his retention has become a duty of care thingo for Mary - ISP might destroy him FFS

Definitely have a successful season - that's my choice.
Would rather watch us win games than lose them all day, every day..
The real question is the definition of success.
In my view success, with the roster we have, is top 5 or better - so we agree on that.
My concern is that our definition of success and the board's definition of success are 2 totally different things.
I am afraid that finishing in 8th spot and playing one finals game, will be heralded as a big success and an indication that McGregor is a career coach on the way up.
That's where the longer term welfare of our club overrides everything else.
In reality he has been a dead weight ever since he was plucked from oblivion and appointed head coach of this once proud club.
He can't coach no matter what roster you give him.
So it may come to pass that he scrapes into the 8 which is a limbo result that facilitates his continuation.
That would be a total disaster and relegate us to also rans (as we have been for 6 years) for another long period.
I know we have differing opinions on this but if the object of the exercise is to win premierships, we need a great coach to go with our roster.
This is all good quality discussion and doesn't change my excitement on game day.
Love St. George - always have and always will.
Want them always to do well.

We've got no issues with Dugan: McGregor
16x9_small

The Sharks' Josh Dugan (r) comes u against his former club St George Illawarra on Thursday. (AAP)

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor insists there are no issues with Josh Dugan ahead of the centre running out against his old club for Cronulla.

Updated Updated 1 hour ago

Paul McGregor insists there is no bad blood with Josh Dugan, heading into the Kangaroos centre's grudge match against St George Illawarra.

Dugan will play his first game against the Dragons for Cronulla on Thursday night, since leaving the Red V at the end of last year after claiming he would not receive world-class money while categorised as a centre at the club.

Dugan's final weeks at the Dragons were also controversial, after he was dropped for last year's round-25 clash with Penrith when he missed the team bus.

There were also reports the 27-year-old had failed to return home on the plane with the team from Brisbane the previous week.

But when asked on Thursday about the pair's relationship, Dragons coach McGregor insisted they were on good terms after Dugan's exit from the club.

"I am," McGregor said.

"As a professional sportsman you feel you know your own worth, and it's what happens in professional sport. Players change clubs, coaches change positions.

"With Josh he felt he required a certain amount of money which they didn't come to terms with, so he moved to another club where he got what he needed.

"I wish him all the best ... Except for tomorrow night."

Dugan scored 28 tries in 84 games for the Dragons, playing mostly at fullback in his five-year stay with brief stints in the centres at the end of 2014 and 2017.

He will shift back to the No.1 spot for much of the derby, after Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan said the role would be shared with Valentine Holmes.

The Sharks coach noticed a lift in energy from Dugan at training this week while McGregor also expected the club's former big-name back to be pumped up.

But Flanagan said that had to be kept in check after the rivals fought out two nail-biters last year.

"I talk to all the players who come up against their previous clubs, and I've been doing it for years," Flanagan said.

"It's not a personal battle, we've got to make sure we go out there and do the best thing for the team.

"If it starts to become personal then you start to lose focus on the Cronulla Sharks, you're not going to do your job."

Well said sir.

To briefly expand on your point about success... 8th out of 16 should never be considered success.

Personally I think we need to finish at least in the top for it to be considered a successful season, with the roster that we now have. I hope that our Board sees it the same way. I would be happy for us to secure a new coach for 2019, no matter where we finish. I do think that the Illawarra faction at the club are very pro Mcgreggor.

Specialist 7 for specialist 7 - Nicolls should get first crack if disaster struck..
Mann should be playing every week.
He should slot into one of the centre positions or even a wing spot.
Keep him away from half back even in an emergency.
IMO

Mary's 'coaching' modus operandi is about political survival - learnt from Doust. Fu*k the fans & results.
Aim for middle of the road & don't rock the boat.
Massage your power base with rewards for loyalty over success & largely extraneous 'talent'
He banged on about 'glue' & 'loyalty on 360, but that was code for 'stick' by me fellas.
Every team has its senior group whose members are rarely sacked because that would threaten the coach's power base & foster whiteanting.
Great coaches don't operate like this - they select on form and results. Fear is the great motivator of performance at the highest level, NOT the love of coach that Mary engenders at Kogarah.
Thus we get the journeyman syndrome at the Dragons where offering safe harbour to them promises another loyal insider for the weak coach. He'll get Latimore, Nichols, Alllgood etc into the inner sanctum as soon as he can. They'll be loyal - unless he sacks someone. Sack Lafai & the other backs become unsettled - the glue unsticks. Older players have a voice & carry knives.
Young guys don't - they're dispensable- not a potential political threat. Mann has no political allegiances poor fella
