Alexander backs Ciraldo to coach Panthers next year
Greg Alexander has seen enough from Cameron Ciraldo over the past month to suggest he is capable of taking over from Anthony Griffin on a full-time basis, declaring:“If Cameron is our coach next year, I’d be happy.”

Ciraldo will become the least experienced coach ever to taste finals footy when Penrith takes on the Warriors at ANZ Stadium on Saturday. It will be Ciraldo’s fifth game as a head NRL coach, breaking the record previously held by Jason Taylor, who took Parramatta to the finals after only 15 matches in 2006.
Speculation that Ivan Cleary could return to the foot of the mountains in the off season won’t go away, although the Panthers hierarchy maintains no decision has been made on a coach for next season.

Alexander, a Penrith director, has worked closely with Ciraldo since the former Sharks, Knights and Panthers forward took over a month ago. The man dubbed ‘Brandy’ has been sufficiently impressed to suggest he would be comfortable for Ciraldo to retain the job permanently despite his limited NRL experience.

“Honestly, I’ve been so impressed with Cameron, just his attitude and how they’ve been training,” Alexander said.

“I like him, I think he’s a good coach. He’s not overwhelmed. There is no panic in Cameron, he’s very measured. I like the way he speaks to the boys, they appreciate it.

“I like his thoughts on the game, the little subtle things. There are a lot of people that can talk up a good game but it’s transferring that knowledge and getting your best out of the players.

“That’s the key to coaching - getting the best out your players, getting them to play their best footy.

“If you do that, you’re a good coach. There’s no doubt it’s been difficult because the first couple of weeks he couldn’t get the best out of them. He got the best out of them at training but it just didn’t transfer on game day. That’s the key for Cameron.

“It’s hard to make a judgment on a coach if you’re not there all the time. I have been there all the time over the last month, I’ve watched and listened to Cameron talk to the players, watched the video sessions, watch him analyse our game.

“I’ve been impressed. I like what he’s been doing.”

Asked about Ciraldo staying on in the role next season, Alexander replied: “If Cameron is our coach next year, I’d be happy.”

Alexander was less pleased a fortnight ago, when the Panthers dropped consecutive games against the Knights and Warriors. Those performances prompted him to publicly question whether his team could make a finals impact. However, after Penrith beat the Storm in Melbourne, Alexander believes they can contend for the title.

“I believe we can,” he said.

“I saw enough in that Melbourne game, although there is a lot of work to do. I saw enough improvements in a lot of facets to suggest we’re not far away from playing our best footy. When we play our best footy, we can beat any of the teams.”

Penrith faces a Warriors side that beat them 36-6 just a fortnight ago, but Alexander believes the side isn’t mentally scarred by the result.

“With the players we’ve got it doesn’t take much more thought or effort to get yourself another two or three tries. That will be the key,” he said.

“I’m sure we will be there defensively, as long as we play smart with the ball.”

Dean Pay and Scott Seibold have done wonderful jobs this year, none of them can touch Demetrious resume. Hiring the the rookie with the best resume doesn't mean your getting a good coach. Ill take the guy we know(assuming we a decent showing in the finals).

Dean Pay was a classic bulldogs hire, they wanted to go back to being the family club.

Seibolds name is Anthony btw, not Scott. And he has a very good record as an assistant & lower grade coach. Having been a coach at 3 clubs.

Demetriou’s record doesn’t guarantee he’ll be a good coach, no one said it would. But it is clearly less of a risk than a rookie like Ciraldo who has little experience.

I am a bit unconvinced if we go down the Ciraldo path, but if we do he needs a full time experienced assistant coach next to him.

No its not clear. Not at all IMO.

Ciraldo already knows our players personalities, their character flaws and strengths, their footballing flaws and strengths. He has been successful with a huge amount of our squad in the lower grades so the players also know him. They have an existing relationship already and it seems like he already has the respect of the playing group. He wont need to make mass changes to adapt to his style, he is in the system already, that counts for a lot.

What type of coach is Demetiou? is a man manager and motivator? Is he a brilliant tactician? Does he coach expansive attacking footy or is he more of a bennett coach who like basic safe attacking footy? What are his attacking structures like? How well does he manage a teams culture?

How many demetriou coached teams have you even watched play footy?

I'd be happy to keep Ciro in the job. No more dodgy broken contracts though please.

Given he’s been successful everywhere he’s coached, it is very clear. Maybe it’s just a coincidence he’s had success as head coach at 3 seperate clubs? LOL

How long do you think it takes for a coach to get up to speed with a players strengths & weaknesses? That’s not exactly a long term process. Steve Georgallis had the respect of the playing group circa 2010, I don’t think players are the best judges of who should coach.

My understanding is Demetriou is known as a good tactician, and I’m pretty confident in saying he manages a team culture pretty well. I doubt he’d of had the success he has without it.

I’ve seen the Cutters & Pride play under him, but I can’t remember specifics.

It’d be absolute madness to put such an inexperienced coach in charge of such an inexperienced team. But given the appointments the club has made in recent years that’s what you can bet they’ll do.

You've literally just picked the highest rated assistant over the last couple years and are pushing him. lol good for you mate, hes not an experienced coach, Ciraldo has more experience running an NRL team than Demetriou. That's a fact.

I disagree its clear, I think its madness to bring in a rookie coach when we have Ciraldo already here coaching.

If he's that good bring him on as assistant. With his experience at beoncos surely he'd be an asset.

No harm in interviewing him though. Look at the record

Ive got no problem with them looking at any applicants. But there is absolutely no way of saying which rookie coach will nail it and which will bomb, Ciraldos time in charge now will tell us much more about him then any interview.

He’s much more experienced overall than Ciraldo, 3 or 4 games at NRL level as a fill in don’t count for much.

I picked him out because of his record, and he’s not my number one preferred option anyway. But I’d take him over Ciraldo.

Unless we’re offering big bucks I don’t see him moving to do the same job he’s doing now. He’s at the most professional club in the comp.

We need to sort out the head coach role before any assistants anyway.

Ciraldo could be a stop gap until ivan comes over maybe a 1yr or 2yr deal hes done ok so far 4 games 2 wins 2 losses and he does have a win in melbourne which our previous few coaches couldnt achieve. The players seem to like him and he did have success with the younger boys and knows a few of them that played under him.

Yeah I get that he has a great resume and it’s a good reason for wanting him. But you keep mentioning getting an experienced coach, he’s not an experienced nrl coach.

For sure he has head coached more teams than Ciraldo and been very successful but he would still be a rookie coach with a lot to learn.

Ciraldo is less experienced but not as an nrl coach and as I keep mentioning he knows the players and club inside and out and from what I can tell is establishing good working relationships with olayers and staff.

If we have to get an inexperienced Nrl coach I’d rather take the devil we know than the one we dont. IF and it’s a big IF we continue to improve on our recent performances than give Ciraldo a shot if it has to be a rookie or get someone with more nrl experience whoever it may be. Swapping one rookie for another doesn’t make sense to me when you consider all the factors.

It is a shame how it has all played out.

Question marks are inevitably raised over whether or not Ciraldo is ready for the job or what we need going forward. He doesn’t get long enough before the off-season to either prove those doubts wrong or alternatively confirm the doubts.

That’s not the best for the club (given it creates a sense of uncertainty) nor is it the best for his career. The same question marks aren’t really raised in the same way if, say for arguments sake, Griffin were never sacked, and Ciraldo were picked up by another club as a head coach. He then gets at least a season or two to prove himself.

I also can’t help but feel that Griffin would have made a good assistant coach, particularly in coaching defence and coaching forwards. However it would be next to impossible to relegate him from head coach to assistant and maintain a functional working environment. I still think assistant coach at another club is where he is most likely to turn up.

That’s why I said I’d prefer Bennett, Cleary etc.

But if we were to go with a younger coach then Demetriou would be my choice, or possibly Justin Holbrook (coach of St Helens)

There’s a limited amount of experienced coaches out there, it’s entirely possible we may strike out on getting any of them to come here.

But as young coaches go they don’t come much more experienced than Demetriou.

Stop gap makes no sense to me.

This is top level footy, you can’t have a guy as a placeholder. He’s either the head coach going forward or not.

If Cleary can’t come in 2019 he shouldn’t come at all. (Unless the soon to be appointed head coach gets naturally moved on)

Nb. Wayne Bennett might be the exception to this.

Peachey wants to stay with the Panthers.

Overall I’m pretty happy if we can pull this off, he’s a real spark for the team. We need experience too.
