Really, that’s why he’s been the driving force behind the expansion into the country, the Women’s comp and making all players available for rep duties.

He was frustrated when the all stars game was cancelled and has been very vocal in his support for the emergence of Tonga.

He has many faults, but this is not one.

He’s on record many times as saying he wouldn’t have a team in Melbourne, he’s also been asked about expansion into Perth and scoffed at it.

In terms of expanding the game beyond its traditional boundaries he’s very old school.

We dont agree on much. But on this I have to agree.

Gus seems to care greatly for developing players and expanding. Look at how quickly he agrees to release players for better opportunities elsewhere.

All the money we put into developing players outside of our catchment area. Taking home games to the country. Letting any fit player on our roster participate in any representative matches. Even those like City vs Country which weren't real rep matches and were more like exhibition matches for the country areas.

He is stuck in the 90's.. As a result we aren't where we could be

Gus has done plenty wrong in my eyes!

Your mental if you think his ego is stopping shit like this. He is all about spreading the game and getting the team into the media with interesting stories.

You don’t think Gus would love a story about the boys heading to NZ and training with the All Blacks???

Wake up to yourself. Gus is happy to let the coaching staff handle the coaching.

You’re unbelievable.

The argument at the trial game would say otherwise.

So why don't they do things with other codes then?

Other teams around us are losing experienced players. Slater, Lewis, maybe Smith and etc. I don't think there'll be much of a gap anymore.

A step in the right direction... Now to get Gus to stop praising other teams experience and get us some. Then we may make the next step

This. We are about to go through a big shift in the power dynamics of the sport. Just have to let our core get experience and once these guys all retire over the next 2 seasons we'll be right. We'll never match the teams with a few 200+ game premiership winners.

Lewis retires. They sign Josh Morris.

Tim Grant covers the loss of Wallace. MWZ covers Crichton

But still we will start behind this season experience wise as CHN and Peachey won't be covered

Yeah we will be behind this season. So what. By 2020 we would have made finals 4 years in a row and most of the useful experience will be retired. Guys like Slater and Smith are gone. Storm have less than a 40% win rate without Smith. Sharks won't have Gallen, Lewis and Holmes. Roosters will lose Cronk.

The scales will tip in our favour as our squad becomes more experienced. We are next in line to become the powerhouse club if people can have some patience.

Not once in that time have we looked like we'd actually win it.

CHN left and is hardly a high paid player. There will be a few others like that kinda takes a step back.

Is there a person here that sees Merrin, Tamou and Maloney finishing their deal? There is 700 or so games gone. That is the issue we have had during this finals run

Short term pain for long term gain. 2020 onward I see us as a premiership force IF we can keep a core of players to gain the required experience. Cleary will be a seasoned rep player by then for example.

If we can fix our back 3 and hooking position plus off load Merrin we will be a force.
However the worry is we have only signed Tim Grant and MWZ for next year IMO both are only NSW cup standard

We seem to constantly get younger though, I don’t see any signs of us slowing the player turnover.

I think in part this is driven by the obsession with our juniors, for a long time ive noticed many fans get more upset over losing a promising junior than a seasoned pro.
