I cant recall one time where a team has hired someone looking for "the next..." and it's worked out.
All the best hires have been good fits with ownership/GM, and have established a quality staff around them

Robert Mays just made this point on twitter... McVey aggressively pursued Wade Phillips and surrounded himself with quality staff. Pederson aggressively pursued Schwartz, and was eyes open to keep a number of Chip Kelly hold over staff who he thought were good (Fipp, Duce, Stoutland, Undlin etc). Nagy was willing to keep Fangio.

None of those guys at the time were the next anything.. they were just guys who fit what the organisation wanted and had a good plan for infrastructure around them.

I think that's why i like the Fangio/Kubiak move most. It just feels like a plan and not Elway just looking for "the next"

There is no next McVey, Pederson, Nagy, Reid, Belicheck, Payton or anyone. You just get who you get, and their either good enough to take their experiences and use it to be a good team builder in their own unique way, or they arent.

Looks like Keith Butler will stay as DC is Pittsburgh, one year on his contract to go.

The RBs coach responsible for Bell's career and Conner getting to a Pro Bowl doesn't get renewed.

Flabbergasted I tells ya.

Butler staying on feels like a real upset
The Steelers have invested a lot in the defence, high picks, free agent money etc and it’s still a middle of the road d that you can move the ball on without concern

Haha, that's a good comeback, but i'm a little tiny bit with Screamin' A on this
Im not allll the way there and all the coaches of colour who got fired i think deserve to be... but man the minority coaches situation is a real thing IMO

.

As these teams will abruptly find out, there is only one mcvay.

.
This is just my 2cents worth...

The thing that people gloss over with McVay is that he may be young.... but almost his entire coaching career has been in the NFL.

Right when Jon Gruden brought him in as a QC guy in Tampa when he was in his early 20’s he’s worked in the NFL under the Gruden’s or The Shannahans.

There was no transition from college to the pros needed for McVay as he has been pretty much raised in the fire of the NFL from the start.

The likes of Kliff Kingsbury have been working exclusively in the college game where they see nowhere near the types of athletes and diverse defensive schemes as they do in the league.

It’s pretty f**king easy looking like an offensive genius when your working against teams where most kids probably won’t end being pros.

It’s not to say they can’t do it... but it isn’t as easy as just hiring the next young offensive guru out of college... McVay was always more than just that...

that's what i meant but you just expanded on it very well. mcvay had a ton of experience in the nfl and communicates his opinions so well that his success as a hc was guaranteed to occur. the first time i heard him speak i knew he was gonna turn the rams around.

Kingsbury isn’t the next anyone. He’s a poor mans Chip Kelly. Chipper ended up a failure/not being suited to the pros but at least he had a College CV which warranted taking the risk. I doubt Kingsbury wins the division and takes the cards to the playoffs in his first season.

Tomlin's first DB coaching job was at Arkansas in the late 90s, Butler was DC at the time, Fichtner was the OC too. It's all stupidly placed loyalty I think, same way they clinged onto LeBeau.

I see the attraction in getting a NE coaching staff member, but I'm not seeing it working. Patriots D isn't what it once was.
Dolphins will be back on the coaching/GM carousel in 3 years time, if not sooner.
Happy freakin' days.

Basically whoever Miami gets will need to be given time to get the roster sorted out. Gase got rid of anyone who could play. The rest is an aging team.
So I won't be judging the new coach on the first, or even second season. By the third we'll know if there's light at the end of the long, dark tunnel.

Congrats Patriots on the 10 AFC East championships.
Jets be Jets.
Bills be Bills
And Phins be Phins.

I thought Vance was a pretty decent DC.... people always shit on bad HC’s going back to coordinator roles but rarely remember they were usually very impressive coordinators, which is how they got HC gigs

Exhibit A: Gus Bradley

He’s got plenty of talent to work with on that side. And likely an elite pass rusher coming into that group

Joseph wasn't he only had 1 season as a DC which Miami finished something like 30th in D, every other season before Denver he was a DB's coach
