It's all part of Ivan's mantra. He wants players that have skill but equally a good attitude.

Its a pity Cleary used up his 'on the bus' mantra at the Tigers last year. It could of been used to great effect this season given what the team is going.

The efforts and attitudes of the young players Too, Kenny and Naden, as well Mansour and RCG responding to the challenge of being dropped, Tamou and JFH playing their best footy, are all embodiments to the 'on the bus'. With DWZ, and perhaps Blake, those who chose to get off.

I think Gus was too close to them. Lacked the rationale to make the tough choices
Nah. Lewis, Coote, Grant, Petero, Merrin, Soward, Jennings and then Cleary himself. He has gotten rid of many players when it's needed. The same players he said were brilliant (Merrin), great clubman (Petero), alway have a job at Panthers (Lewis). He is plenty ruthless.

Alex Ferguson always said the hardest job in managing Man Utd was telling a player they weren't good enough. He said he always delivered the message personally and always made sure he had another club for them to talk to. I think that's Gus's mode. Loves Merrin, pushes him for NSW captain and then when needed he is on a plane to the UK with a Bon Voyage card signed by his Panthers' team mates in his hand luggage.

Looks like Peachy got off on the wrong stop then.

With any luck we can get him back. I'll be the first to say I was wrong with thinking we would not miss him.

How Phil Gould helped deliver Watene-Zelezniak to the Bulldogs

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has revealed a conversation with Phil Gould about his future helped convince him that Canterbury was the right place to reignite his NRL career.

Watene-Zelezniak had no shortage of suitors after requesting a release from Penrith, with Wests Tigers, Parramatta and North Queensland all keen to secure his services. The Kiwis captain sought the counsel of a range of trusted confidants in coming to the decision, including several close friends now playing at the Bulldogs.
The chief consideration in coming to a decision with his wife was finding the right environment for their young family, with only those close to Watene-Zelezniak aware of Canterbury’s interest before the announcement. In his first interview since leaving the foot of the mountains, Watene-Zelezniak said a conversation with former Panthers supremo Phil Gould - a former Bulldogs player and coach - solidified his view the ‘family club’ still lived up to its moniker.

"I talk to Gus a lot, I always talk to him about decisions I make," Watene-Zelezniak told the Herald. "He’s a really good guy to be able to talk to, he knows a lot about my football and a lot about my family.

He’s helped me along from such a young age and I trust what he says, the counsel and advice that he gives. I took it on board with making my decision.
"He said he had been [at Canterbury] before and the one thing about the Bulldogs is that they are a strong club and will be very good, that the players would be good for me.

"He assured me they would be big on family as well, he gave his little input there.

"I wouldn’t say that [alone] made my decision, at the end of the day it came down to what they had for me.

"Then my wife and I made the right decision. I’m lucky to have his number to call whenever I need to get some counsel and advice."

Watene-Zelezniak will make his Canterbury debut in the centres against the Roosters on Sunday, but his long-term position remains unclear. The incumbent Kiwi custodian, who can also play on the wing, said his preference is to fill the No.1 jersey longer term.

"I get asked that question a lot and all I’ve ever said is I prefer to play fullback," Watene-Zelezniak said. "That’s where I grew up playing. It’s just where I prefer but I’ll play anywhere I’m needed.

"(Coach) Dean (Pay) knows I’ll play anywhere just to play - if he wants me in the front row, I'll play front row."

If Watene-Zelezniak was intent on playing fullback, he could have shifted to Townsville to immediately take up the Cowboys offer. He may well been the long-term replacement for James Tedesco at the Tigers, where he has a strong relationship with New Zealand coach Michael Maguire. However, "DWZ" said finding the right fit for his family was more important than playing or even ladder position.
"Madge [Maguire] is a good friend and coach," he said. "It was always out of Tigers and Bulldogs, but I just felt Bulldogs was where I needed to be.

"I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be coached by Madge if I’m good enough to get into the Kiwi team.

"[The Cowboys] was tough because Townsville is a massive move for my family, I have two kids and a wife. With the kids, it wasn’t the right move at the time.

"With Parra too, it was one of the hardest decisions I had to make in my life. We’ve made it now and we’re happy."

Watene-Zelezniak fell out of favour at the Panthers just months after being handed the Kiwis captaincy. Penrith coach Ivan Cleary dropped the local junior in mid May after an apparent falling out. However, the Test star declined to comment on his relationship with Cleary or the Panthers.

"I don’t really want to talk about it, my main focus is on the Doggies, how I can do a job for them," he said. "I'm really happy. I’ve tried to leave it all behind."

Watene-Zelezniak will come up against the Panthers for the first time at Bankwest Stadium in round 20.

"I’ll find it awkward because it’s all I’ve really known as a kid," he said. "I grew up in Penrith, been there since I was five years old. The boys know how I am, they’re really good mates of mine. It’s different, I’m sure they will go hard and I’ll play hard."

A good attitude is most of the problem. I like Blake but if the attitude dropped and given we don't use our centres then I can live with it.. Provided if like with Dallin we strengthen the squad elsewhere not just pay overs for some kid

Sadly I can't help but agree. Blake also seems to get injured fairly easily too. Always seems to have ankle issues.

I think Peach would be a great replacement. Can fill in so many spots. I also like the look of Nathen. Like the other boys that have come through. He appears hungry and determined.

This hunger and determination sadly is lacking in some players, who are hugely talented and rely on this talent only.

Kenny could also be a pretty handy 14.

I’ve liked the look of him so far, but if there’s a better hooker out there you have to look at it.

Yeah I take your point. I guess it also depends the kind of money Turpin goes for. Sounds like he'll get good money if 3 clubs want him. If we do I don't see Kenny getting lock over Martin so it'll be 14.

If any team needs a Hooker with a running game it’s us, would take serious pressure of Nathan Cleary to produce.

That touches on what I said the other day. The top 4 all have extra firepower in the spine, some at fullback some at hooker. You need it to be successful these days.
