He has always been second in the playmaker pecking order though.

This was Moylans team. He chimed in at 1, 6, 7 and 9 from fullback as he saw fit. Whenever and wherever he wanted the ball. He got it. Once he left Maloney came in and Nathan went from our best player before injured in 2018 (he was the guy making things happen) to taking a backseat to Jimmy once he returned. Which is what everyone on here said he needed to do as when Nathan was the dominant player Jimmy was not effective.

There havent been many games where he was missing a senior playmaker. But the few that have his form is very different and many of his better games came when he needed to be the man.

So in 2020 he is for the first time in his career starting the season as our primary playmaker. Which changes what is expected of him from both us and the team. Maybe he fails miserably having to be the man every week rather than on a few occassions. Maybe he thrives knowing he's not stealing the thunder from a teammate who is more experienced than he is.
So I'm (Nathan) not going to steel someone's thunder and let them be the dominant half?..that's a ludicrous statement. Penrith put all their eggs in his basket and are waiting for him to become the dominant half? What happens when or if it doesn't happen, is his DAD going to try someone different?..Not a hope in hell. His dad has no idea how to get a team anywhere near the top, Penrith have been shafted big time by trying to keep a player who is overrated and wont deliver like the great halves who demand his wage.

Its f**king ludicrous to think he wasn't defering to Maloney. do you watch us play?

How do you judge this?

take this year, wouldn’t the no.1 playmaker touch the ball more?

Cleary had 6 touches more a game than Maloney, and importantly had more touches in the last 20m.

The only thing that makes Maloney the no.1 playmaker is he was more successful at it. They mostly played a left/right side field configuration.

At worst he was on an equal footing with Maloney this year.

Watch our last game, I counted four or five times Cleary passed the ball to Maloney inside the 20. Not once did I see Cleary pass Maloney the ball outside the 20. Our attacking sets were very predictable, we'd take 2 or 3 settlers to set up a backline play for Maloney to have a crack at them. Maloney got ball out wide for the set play most of the time, Cleary would still get more touches in the set catching and passing to a prop etc but the sets were structured to give Maloney the good shot at them most of the time, you know he was out there with Kikau our go to weapon and only weapon for many games.

Numbers without context are just about useless.

Lol not sure what deferring is, but I'll answer your question..Yes I watched every Panthers game...so be more explicit in what you are trying to say..

When he played without Maloney, he was the dominant half on the field and in my opinion, we looked better.

The problem is it was such a small sample size.

This year Maloney didn’t play 2 games which Cleary played , we won both by 6 points.

last year it was 3 games, we lost all 3.

I'll try and say this without it being too difficult for you... creative players make things happen..they don't just offload to forwards and expect things to happen.. they should have a little bit something different in their game..is that easy enough?

Numbers do need some context, but you also need more than one game to go off.

I thought we played quite differently against Newcastle than we had all season.

He was deferring to the game plan and Maloney, that is what has been explained to you multiple times which is obviously too difficult for you.

Yeah that was in a game when Nathan did dominate and Maloney was still getting set plays run for him in that manner. Believe me or not but I can tell you Nathan and Maloney were combining inside the 20 a lot, especially after the first ten rounds(or so) when they started to try and make adjustments to our attack when we were getting slammed for our lack of tries in the papers etc

I watch most of our games twice, I re-watched the Newcastle game after we had this number of touches/dominant half discussion last time which is why I was sitting there counting and paying attention to Cleary/Maloney.

Defering again..you need to proof read what you are saying.. obviously you are a N Cleary supporter. I know what's been said, I watch the games, I have been a Penrith supporter since 1969, I get a feel for the game and what works. And from my point of view, and I'll say it again, Penrith have been dudded with the Cleary combo.

I'm backing Nathan. The kid works as hard as anyone ive ever seen

He just needs to back himself now, first part of the year he just looked like he was constantly in two minds whether to run or pass and he was quite poor(as we know). When he was backing himself towards the end of the year he looked like a different player.

The problem has never been effort, it’s that he’s not a natural with his passing & kicking game. He’s talked about this himself where he said he needs to read what’s in front of him better.

So much of the time he looks robotic out there.

Jimmy Maloney is the dominant half in what ever team he plays in.

Why anyone would expect a 21 year old kid to change that is beyond me

I didn’t see what you saw, they looked very much on a equal footing this year.

As I said yesterday, I think the mistake we made was not having Maloney as first receiver. This would’ve made it clear Maloney was in charge. And in fact when it happened in the 11 games Cleary missed in the last 2 years, we were a much better team.
