Defamation is virtually impossible to prosecute in the US.

With a scotus that is now dominated by folks who interpret the constitution literally, I'd say even more so.

I'm not an expert on US law, and I'm sure there are limits, but I can say that those are not so clearly defined as for someone who is, to be able to answer your question on the limits of the example posed.

But yes, I could well see circumstance where I could make such a claim in the US and not face any consequences beyond having to defend myself should I find myself having to do so.
