The Demise of the ATM?

Yesterday I had the misfortune of visiting a brand new shopping centre called M-City at Clayton in South east Melbourne. It opened in August, has two floors covering an estimated 40,000 square metres.

It has Woolworths and Kmart along with a plethora of speciality shops on the ground floor while the other floor appears to be just one massive food court.

Just one thing missing. There is not one ATM in the whole place and none on the exterior walls. WTF!

Is this the shape of things to come?

The website of the centre says there is a ATM outside Woolworths, but that is the only one mentioned so very strange, no mention of any bank in the centre either.

I checked the website on the day too, looked everywhere to no avail.

Asked the Woolies checkout girls and they said they've never seen an ATM at the front of the store.

It's built in to the checkouts. Buy your crap and get cash out at the same time. Then you can go to the boozer or smoke shop without your bank or insurance company tracking you. Cash out makes you seem like a normal meth-head instead of a drunk or a smoker.

I have a feeling that ATM's just add maintenance costs that the bank's no longer want to have to concern themselves with.

There is a small plaza with a Woolies near me that I do my supermarket shopping at. In years past there used to be a St George and a CBA ATM in the plaza. Now, they've been replaced by one of those non-Bank generic ATM's that charge the $2.50 transaction fee if you use it. f**king shits me. So of course, I just get my cash out at the Woolies.

But yeah, essentially I think the bank's just can't be arsed having as many ATM's out there so that maintenance costs and hassle can be reduced.

Same thing at my Plaza. Most of the time they unable to supply a receipt or a message saying "this ATM only dispenses $20 notes".

Whoever owns these things should at least adequately maintain them.

I suspect that reducing and eventually eliminating ATMs is a part of creating a totally cashless society. Will Mummy and Daddy put a credit card under their kids pillow for a tooth instead of cash?

The number of bank branches is declining as well. Some regional centres across the country don't even have a branch and/or post office.

Tap and go can get f**ked. I know of a few people who had a lost or stolen card, not reported it immediately (as within 5 minutes) and find their funds have been eaten into.

The major problem is you don't get an account balance with tap and go or EFTPOS. Just to f**k up the banks, I will go into a branch and ask for a balance, come back a few minutes later and withdraw $20. If I can find a branch.

Its funny, the Marrickville Metro shopping centre had just recieved a major upgrade with a whole new part across the road and now some of the old centre is being done up, in the old part a new NAB bank has just opened so it has NAB, Commonwealth, ANZ, St George and Sydney Mutual bank all in a small area all have ATMs besides the branch and there is also a rediteller ATM to near Woolworths, the new centre across the road has sweet f*ck all, may have a generic ATM or rediteller but none of the major banks presence.

When ATMs come up about in the late 80s it was going to be the demise of the bank, and this actually happened, you had places like Marrickville that used to have 2 Com banks on Marrivkville Rd, now there is only one, here where I live In The Shire Gymea and Kirawee have both lost their Com branches, which mean that elderly folk have to travel to Miranda or Sylvania for service, So what has lead the demise of ATM the answer is simple Supermarkets.

Before I had to isolate, I checked out numerous shops in my area, both in the main streets and the plaza.

The number hat had a sign out the front saying "No EFTPOS - cash only" was amazing.

Mainly butchers, gift shops, take aways, two bob shops and tobacconists.

The law was changed just a few years ago to limit cash purchases to $10000. This renewed the discussion that cash was in its death throes and would soon disappear. What people forget is that not every location has reliable internet. There are loads of places where EFTPOS drops out regularly. Try pulling out your card only to find it's useless.

I think cash will still be with us for some time yet.
