This would be taking over the WatchAFL service - currently performed by Foxtel.
Yes far more about exposure than making big dollars. I knows the NRL`s WatchNRL is popular amongst a segment of English Rugby League fans and interestingly last year I read that it is also well-known amongst French rugby union journalists.

But even if they got 1m @ $250.00 that`s only $250m, and then where does the other $200m - $250m come from. FTA ain`t going to pay that if someone else has the streaming rights.
I think what we are seeing here is that advertisement free, cheap streaming services, combined with anti-syphoning laws and the desire to remain on FTA, has the potential to undercut the value of sports broadcast rights especially in a small market like Oz with competing duel broadcasters.
Alternatively and as I said before when our deal was being negotiated, the most value for rights might lie in one broadcaster having the lot, so if you don`t watch the FTA they catch you on their streaming service and vice versa. This is probably what Paramount/ C10 are thinking. Is it worth between $470m and $500m who knows.
Interesting to note Mclachlan did say the opportunity to broadcast the game internationally was part of negotiations, good luck with that.
Four games would be on Ch10, which is owned by CBS like Paramount+.

It makes me wonder how Foxtel make any money from sport. A Kayo subscription is only $25 and it contains, NRL, AwFuL, Cricket, Netball, F1, Supercars and other stuff. No wonder they're $2 billion in debt. The amount they generate from advertising inbetween halves would help, but it wouldn't be enough to cover their losses.

Good luck considering they have no presence internationally. This is something that the NRL should be pushing in places like England. It even due to its somewhat similarity with Rugby Union, it would be easier for us to push into rugby markets in Europe for example
France is a market worth tapping into. If successful then the Roosters might end up having a fanbase!

Don’t forget foxtel viewers too
So nrl 600k subscribers across Kayo and fox at 400 pa is 240 million and they pay nrl less than this in cash

then there’s the advertising they get from nrl who knows what that’s worth

Kayo paid subscriptions rose 138,000 (13%) during the quarter to 1.151m but the bigger increase was on Binge which had a 30% subscriber increase for the quarter up to 1.284m

Importantly for Foxtel, Broadcast ARPU rose 2% to $82.

how can the arpu have gone up when the growth is in lower cost streaming And theres a drop in STV?
Foxtel's lying. Murdoch is a shady character. There's no way they're making money from any of this.

1,151,000 customers x $25 x 9 months = $258,975,000.

Thats almost $40m more than what they're paying for NRL, but when you combine how much they're paying AwFuL, cricket, netball, F1, Supercars then it becomes obvious they're losing money on this platform.

Kayo need at least three times as many customers to be able to make a profit from all of this content at just $25pm. They need to charge about $45pm to make a profit on NRL and AwFuL alone.

Add another $40m to $45m pa for F1 broadcast rights, $33m pa between Foxtel and Seven for Stupidcars and it's obvious the current model is unsustainable.

You`d really have to say the only way forward for broadcast deals now is for a FTA broadcaster to own all the rights, both digital and FTA.
The FTA because no sport is going to put their product totally behind a paywall ( the Gov`t won`t let them anyway ) and digital to catch all the rest of the viewers. Until perhaps, and only perhaps, smart TV`s become so ubiquitous in this country that a streaming service provider could buy the rights and stick a couple of games in front of their streaming paywall to meet anti-syphoning requirements.
Until then the only hope of competitive tension has to be between the FTA networks.

Leagues future is foxtel

their numbers just keep growing each year where pretty soon they will dwarf the fta numbers

I can’t see why the grand final or origins need to be exclusive to fta either they should be allowed to be shared with foxtel

it’s going to be hard listening to nine for the origin coverage

foxtels overall coverage of the game is excellent. They get it

nines coverage is a joke

weird thing is somehow Seven screwed themselves with their dodgy pay tv offering...was it presto - the joint Fox venture swallowed by Foxtel Play?

and Fox have no FTA arm...which is why they created Kayo freebies. Maybe Fox should have made a play for Ten.

That's the one. I wouldn't be surprised if both parties go back to some sort of arrangement.

AFL looking at twilight GF’s to bump up their price as they can’t offer much more and they’re not getting the viewing numbers that the NRL is getting. If they do, they’ll get a few extra dollars but their supporter will hate them for it

They should introduce a ptb that would bump it up a little more
