Hes a particularly noted rugby league historian. He does good work, but like Ian Syson - the soccer historian - his work is often coloured by bias towards his chosen sport.

I dont particularly subscribe to Marngrook as a foundation - its entirely based on things that *may" have happened or *may* have been seen. Its pretty clear that many of the rules originated in English school and village sports of the day, but were cobbled together and codified into the Mellbourne Rules in a hotel in Melbourne in 1858. And before that it doesnt really matter where they borrowed ideas from.

Telstra pays for the digital rights and the right to operate the club and AFL network - this has been 60m a year and wasnt reduced during the pandemic. In the extension, this has been enhanced with some other jazz they are doing at Marvel Stadium, an increase in actual sponsorship, and balanced by dropping the live rights.

  • Telstra continues its partnership through the 2023 and 2024 seasons, with highlight, replay and on demand rights while increasing their investment in sponsorship assets.
  • Telstra will become Marvel Stadium’s official technology and innovation partner over the next four years, ensuring the revamped Marvel Stadium offers supporters the best digital experience of any stadium or entertainment venue in the country and ensuring supporters have the technology to connect them to the game they love.
  • Telstra technology and connectivity will be deployed at Marvel over the next few years including fixed and 4G/5G networks upgrades, Artificial Intelligence, and mixed reality and edge computing. From booking a seat to parking to engaging with the game, attendees will soon be able to experience a new stadium experience before, during, and after they attend the game.
  • Telstra will also expand its visual sponsorship elements such as on-field Telstra 5G signage, and continue the development of the AFL’s digital assets such as AFL.com.au, club websites and the AFL Official LIVE App. The updated sponsorship also deepens Telstra’s connections to AFL Clubs and extends the agreement with the AFL Players Association that engages all listed players as ambassadors for use in social marketing campaigns and other initiatives.
Yeh I know that but that means the value of digital revenue is included in their overall media deal they announce where as the nrl digital revenue is an addition to the media rights deal. In effect adding another $24mill ish a year to the nrl media deal if we are comparing oranges with oranges, though the revenue from nrl digital may be in decline since Vlandys cut the media Dept from it.

If people arent paying for the rights, its not part of your rights deal. That said Ive always added digital revenue to the broadcast deal while those funds were known

First of all it 'was reported that Telstra payed $50 million per year in the old contract which ends in 2022 ( not 60m ) for Live Mobile AFL or 'live actual games steaming' which totaled $300m over the course of the contact for 6 years.
When 'all media companies and streamers encountered the Coronavirus and the end/interruption of the NRL/AFL seasons negotiations took place whereby discounts were applied to current contracts caused by the Coronavirus. We heard about Seven TV and Fox negotiating and receiving discounts. Funny we never heard about if Telstra did anything regarding their contract. Keep in mind Telsra owns 35% of Fox/Foxtel with NEWS LTD 65%.

It's this relationship and cross holdings which pressured Telstra to stop entirely 'live streaming of the AFL. So why would they pay $50 pa for something that Telsra no longer shows? If the business operations of Telstra leave a lack of accountability in the use of shareholdings funds- maybe a inquiry might out some improper dealings. However finally Telsra did negotiated a new contract (with Foxtel) whereby Telsra announced 5g upgrade Marvel stadium and maintaing Telsra AFL website. In the 'press release NO OTHER DETAILS of cash amount were mentioned. My take would be if Teltra were going to continue it's ( replay only ) streams and they were paying , either Telsra OR the AFL would have disclosed the cash amount. In fact even the upgrade ie 5g costs amount was never released. So with all this hiding I would go out on a point that their is no cash amount from Telstra to the AFL in the new (negotiated) contract, which then puts into play their $946m figure. It's not like we are talking about pidderlins sums of money - for example by your reckoning the new contract is like the old, $60 yearly ( OR $120m all up ) goes from Telsra to the AFL for little benefit.

Telstra are effectively paying for the digital rights though and take the revenue that creates. Where as nrl run its own digital services and keeps the revenue.
Yeh it’s a shame nrl has now bundled betting and merch into the license line with media and digital so we can’t do a comparison anymore. Last time they were seperate (2019)betting was worth $84mill and merch $12mill.

It mentions in one of the articles the telstra deal was unchanged during covid. as we’ve been talking about telstra are buying the rights to the afl and it’s clubs digital platforms and they then sell the advertising on those platforms and keep the revenue. Plus they are getting more sponsorship advertising in the new deal.
That’s why they will be continuing to pay a large amount.

Got yourself a copy of the contract there have you?

As part of the last deal - " Telstra will once again hold the rights for hand-held devices, AFL.com.au and the club digital network."

Under the extension they have the same terms they've had for the last two years - no live matches - and as far as Im aware Telstra did not recieve a discount in 2020.

The arrangement with streaming partner Telstra has not changed.

Telstra have been paying for the digital rights, including the right to manage the AFL network, for years. Thats not a free service. Keep in mind that Telstras ownership of part of Fox has been a thing since well before the last deal was signed.

Not being published doesnt mean they dont exist. The NRL hasnt revealed specific amounts paid by Fox either. Neither the AFL or Fox have specified how much they are paying for the rights there either. lol "with all this hiding".

I would point out that no one has any idea what Telstra is paying in the new contract, it hasnt been announced at all., but the idea they are getting their side for free is borderline ridiculous. As is the fact that you all keep talking up the gap between Fox/Seven amounts and the announced rights total without making the next logical step. Truly baffling logic.

Telstra, which is the other major shareholder in Foxtel, also extended its direct rights with the AFL for the same period, while announcing it would become Marvel Stadium's official technology partner, turning the Melbourne ground into a showcase for its 5G technology.

Betting revenue has gone through the roof cause of your mate vlandys and the premium tax on bookies for events like origin.

in all this discussion it’s the digital revenue which is confusing things. Gill purposely aggregated that with the tv deals to make it look like their tv deals were so great

If that is true re the betting revenue then the discount in the tv deal of 2021 must be even bigger than we thought given the whole area was $405mill. If betting has gone up that is even less money in that line for media revenue!

Just pointing out the facts based on your claim betting has increased. How you want to interpret this new information is up to you.

At the last break down info in 2019 betting was $84mill, merch $12mill, Digital $24mill. If you are inclined you can assume those same figures to work out what the media revenue part of the licensing line is, not very accurate though as things in each of those areas may have gone up or down. The joys of NRL hiding its revenue like there is something they don't want us to know?

Turn it up! Have you got a copy of the financial/cash amounts???? I Don't think so. My responce was a well reasoned account using YOUR links which go over what I said anyway. So with old and NEW contract announcement the individuals parties and joint ventures CAN AND SHOULD laid out the amounts AND other benefits one party is giving to another. That Tesltra (alone) only mentions upgrades- creates confusion and problems of accountability WHICH as in this example fall entirely on AFL/Telsra press release. Sorry to tell you when you don't mention anything about cash amount, this leaves open speculation (fully justified I'd say) what amount Telstra is actually providing.

It’s 2022. What happened last year is irrelevant now other than a point scoring excercise

look at the games financials. It’s pretty clear they are in rude health

It is interesting only FTA in both codes deals have been open about what they are paying. and even then seven have only quoted an avg not what they will be paying in the extension part for afl.
