AFL looking at twilight GF’s to bump up their price as they can’t offer much more and they’re not getting the viewing numbers that the NRL is getting. If they do, they’ll get a few extra dollars but their supporter will hate them for it
Looks like all the 'streamers' Disney Amazon just got a kick behind. Looks like no bids will come from Amazon/youtube as the Labor Government is set to amend broadcast laws NOT to favor 'streamer' for ALL Australia sport. So with the Law change I cant see competitive tension being generated and Seven and Foxtel can sit back an out wait the AFL and low ball them latter. Geez glad the NRL got our deal already set. Tough times coming up with a world wide recession this year, and the AFL media buyers not in a hurry-

Like trying to hold back the tide. it doesn’t exclude anything, streaming could put three games on the service free and the proposed change only requires fta to be allowed to bid, not that they’re guaranteed to win. Besides isn’t the likely bid battle going To come from ch10/paramount for afl rights?

Best outcome for nrl is if afl get $500mill from ch10/paramount, that would leave seven and nine to fight over nrl and fox/kayo desperate to hold onto nrl When rights come free again in 2028. Maybe if we hadn’t signed for five years so early we could have seen that opportunity come round sooner?

The way the cost of living has increased this year, Fox might be losing a number of their $100/mth customers to a Kayo/Binge combo for $30/mth. Fox might not be willing to pay big dollars when they’re losing revenue and AFL viewing numbers compared to other years.

PVL got in early, that was smart business.

As long as theres no reduction in the number of games on FTA, it doesnt matter who the paytv/streaming provider is. the idea that other streamers are out of the picture because of this is patent nonsense - especially if Ten/Paramount commit to the same FTA/Stream split as Seven/Fox are doing now - and ViacomCBS are reportedly very keen indeed.

I guess only time will tell. If afl acheive anything like $500mill then Vlandys is going to look pretty stupid for signing such a long deal at a time of weakness.

With the fact challenged Gill leading negotiations to get one last deal under his belt before the end of the year where he retires, I would give one bit of advice do a deal now as probably it will be less than the NRL because after 6mths from now the AFL will be lucky to a little over $300m per year as opposed to the NRL getting $400 million. Why would that be?
Well first Seven have already gone onto the record that they will not pay more, ie ( won't blow the brains out)
So a definable bid of only $100m from Seven is on the cards. Remember Seven took the Australia Cricket to courts for around he same amount, so pencil in a reduction their from Seven to the AFL.
Next foxtel, the first thing the AFL did wrong was the same as our bright spark Mr Smith CEO NRL, pubicily bagged mainly Seven ( AFL released rumors of poor production from Seven) to talking to 'streamers' and then Paramount with the intention of cancelling Foxtel. This won't be lost the 'ownership' of Fox. So the streamers re out of the picture because of the Australian government change of laws just leaves paramount/Ten. Now when Dill met with Chief Executive Officer Bob Bakish CEO CBS /paramount however no deal has been announced which would give them impression that CBS wouldn't pay over the current deal- because if they did bid up a deal would have been signed then and their. So it will a reduction even if Ten?paramount latter bid. So this leaves Foxtel a pure subscription service which is intrinsically or heavily linked numbers of subscribers with the general health of the economy. It's not like the pandemic where the Government throw around buckets of money and people had lots of time on then hands due to lockdown, great days for Foxtel, however remember the NRL out rates them on Foxtel, which won't be lost on Executives at Foxtel. So if the economy sours/recession then falling subscriber numbers will lead to tightening the belt the media deals, so this bodes not well for the AFL. You could easily see Foxtel paying decidedly under what they payed before. The door to to AFL getting more is now closed and it's time dependent, ie the longer this goes on the less the AFL will get.

Yes because the AFl would just jump at whatever CBS offered without talking to other parties or trying to see what else can be landed,

Definable bid of 100m from Seven you've pulled out your backside - they already pay more than that. And unlike the cricket, Seven havent made noises about being unhappy with the AFL.

Fortunately the AFL probably doesnt take your advice. This reads like rugby league fanfiction.

The AFL definitely put out statements that their UNHAPPY with Seven. SEE
It not long ago that Seven was on the verge of bankruptcy and was 6 cents a share- one mistake and all those bank guarantees come -calling.
Ten are not in the race- they still have a problem with Australia Soccer football and not making any money on their 100's millions dollars investment their. So Seven will low ball them.
So we are left with Foxtel/Kayo which is in two billion dollars of debt.
"Foxtel also has significant debt. As of June 30, it owed about $914 million to several credit facilities and more than $1 billion to its two shareholders." SMH
Epecially Foxtel is NOT worred by Paramount ANZ, so that leaves open a bid that reflects Foxtel debt situation. If the value is not their, especially latter in the year in a climate of business reductions, that will set the scene for a lower bid price.

Tbf to McLaughlin that backended tv deal could pay off for them. He’s going to say you guys are now paying 473 million pa or whatever it really is minus Telstra media

that’s our starting point for a raise

where as if he had just done the deal at the real average of 400 million it would be harder to get that increase

it’s a crazy world but such kookiness could well pay off for the afl

Yes, but in Crickets case it was Seven complaining about Cricket, This hasnt happened with the AFL. Seven have noted that they are interested in a streaming component this time around. Something that theyve never had.

If paramount are in the race, then so are Ten. Ten are fully owned by ViacomCBS - along with paramount. The bid would be FTA and pay rights, and its amusing to see that dismissed out of hand despsite considerable reporting on it.

To say the AFL are left with Fox is laughable given the reporting around Paramount/ten. PayTV/Streaming rights could literally go to anybody at this point. Any change to legislation wont alter the ability of streamers to bid on streaming rights, however unlikely it may be that Amazaon/Stan will give it a go.

Stan will probably bid for the nrl but they won’t be able to match foxtel

but if they are serious about growing after getting the union nrl would be the key for them

Make your mind up, one post they’re going to get $300 mill, next they going to get $500mill. Lol pure speculation.
from nrls point of view best outcome is ch10/paramount/telstra pay $500mill. At least Vlandys can then play hardball with fox, or hopefully the new non compromised chair and ceo by then.

You're kidding , if you think Ch 7 will fall for that BS ..
its the AFL who wanted the deal back ended so they could proclaim to the world & their dopey fans they achieved a huge increase .... but failed to highlight it only came after they took a huge decrease for the first 3 years of the 5 year deal from ch 7.

Ch 7 will insist the starting point is the deal averaged out over the 5 years ( 20-24) , about 146 mill pa
Around the same amount they paid from 2017-2019.
With foxtel paying essentially the same amount in 23-24 that they did as well there has been no increase.
Both carriers aren't falling for fake bidding tension line & all the headlines in the world aren't fooling Ch 7 or foxtel.

Yeh I know because I was the one telling you vlandys is waiting for the afl to do their deal to work off the back of that
Let them do the hard work then have seven or Stan if they miss out on afl to bid for us
