WTF?

You're saying the only metrics that matter are ones that are favourable to your position?

😝

80,000 people marching once doesn't mean shit when only 5k people were attending Redfern Oval to watch the Elmer Fudds in the late 90s. Revenue from attendances, merchandise and membership is what makes clubs strong. The fact many of Sydney's clubs were deserted by their fans during their time of need proves they're fairweather at best and not the dyed in the wool supporters teams need to survive through thick and thin. I've heard dumb as shit Cronulla fans claim they had 40k at the 2016 GF. Big bloody whoop. That's bandwagon support from people who probably haven't been to a game in years.

The fact an "event" game on ANZAC Day or Easter Friday / Sunday / Monday can draw 30k to 50k in Sydney is further proof that most of the people who attend these events are fairweather fans. They're just there for the occasion. The same two teams would draw 8k to 16k on a normal day.

It's ARLC doing what Arthurson and Quayle did. Putting sentimentalism and Sydney first because they're biased and too stupid to see beyond their own backyard.

Who gives a f**k what Politis said?

What authority does he have to grant the 18th licence to North Sydney?

Cowboys are one of the highest drawing clubs on Ch9, hence the decent coverage they get on the network. Ch9 only cares about teams that draw strong ratings. Most Sydney clubs draw low ratings compared to the Cowboys.

Cowboys don't want Thursday or Friday games because many of their fans travel 6 to 8 hours each way. Playing a Cowboys game on Thursday and Friday eats into game day revenue.

Except there's no evidence to support your claim. Cowboys draw better ratings across Australia on Ch9 than most Sydney clubs.

Wow that’s an epic meltdown even for you

the cowboys are a great little club tucked away in far North Queensland

but they will never be another broncos lmao
Read and weep.

"The Broncos are clearly the most watched team in the NRL. It might surprise people see who follows them: Melbourne, North Queensland and South Sydney. Most of the Sydney clubs sit mid-pack with the Raiders, Sea Eagles, Knights and Titans rounding out the bottom of the table."

They have a modern state of the art stadium though which people actually want to go to.
No one wants to go the brookvale or pointsbet or Leichardt stadium except for the local riff raff. Most League fans cringe when these ground are shown on TV lol

Out of 16 clubs you would have to rank the cowboys 12th I would say.

let’s be honest if the club failed and they relocated to Brisbane they would add more to the nrl than they do now

The NSW Government has allowed the stadia in question to sit in a dilapidated state for decades. Many of them have a low brow hill along their eastern sideline like something from the 1920s. That makes them about 100 years out of date.

Well they will have Spent over 2 billion dollars by the time they are done

meanwhile Suncorp looks really dated now and Redcliffe is crying out for an upgrade or a new stadium

Another place they could relocate too that would offer more value to the nrl is Singapore
Singapore would be a good place for a team like the Dragons or Sharks. The apartment development in Cronulla might appeal to a Singaporean businessman looking at establishing a profile in Sydney.

Lang Park still shits over anything NSW has and it's almost 20 years old. It's been upgraded regularly.

Whose fault is that?

Can't expect the ACT gov to be inclined to invest heavily in the sport when the NRL, and previous entities, have treated the ACT as the red-headed step child for decades.

Broadly speaking the more effort you put in the more you get out of these sorts of things, and comparatively over the last 15-20ish years the AFL has put significantly more effort into the region, so they've got significantly more out. As a result Aussie Rules is out preforming RL in the region without even having a local team, and god help RL if they ever do give Canberra a license.

Not to worry though, the NRL can just import all 'their' juniors from the PI's lol. Don't know what they'll do when it becomes necessary to import fans though...

An 18 team comp in 98 with these clubs would have been so so so a better outcome. Imagine where we would be now 25 years later if this had been the make up after SL!

Qlnd
Brisbane Broncos (SL)
South Queensland Crushers (ARL)
North Queensland Cowboys (SL)
Gold Coast Chargers (ARL)

NSW
CC Bears (ARL)
Newcastle Knights (ARL)
Parramatta Eels (ARL)
Canterbury Bulldogs (SL)
Penrith Panthers (SL)
South Sydney Rabbitohs (ARL)
Manly Seaeagles (ARL)
St George Illawarra Dragons
Wests Tigers

Rest
Melbourne Storm
Auckland Warriors (SL)
Adelaide Rams (SL)
Canberra Raiders (SL)
Perth Reds (SL)

We could now be talking about an exciting international inclusion for teams 19&20
Roosters?

Afl put in no effort but the act govt pays millions for 3 games a year and already spent money on Manuka

How many times do I have remind you

You cannot quote crowds in Sydney in the middle if the SL War and the period 97-99 when when fans voted with their feet and cash over super greed Pay-TV war

What you can quote is the 80,000 who marched against the cull of clubs in Sydney

Or the 30-50k crowds that will turn when scheduling is properly planned and the city us not in flood or covid
The numbers that marched when Souths were axed (including a hefty amount of non-Souths fans) should've been enough of a demonstration that cutting/ merging long established clubs is a terrible move for the game.

Yet here we are over 20 years later and some are still adamant we should piss away decades/ centuries of history so we can put dots on a map in the Quixotic hope that a few decades from now (after pumping AFL-esque loads of cash into it) it'll pay off.

(Before the inter-state brigade accuse me of narrow-minded Sydney-centric thinking, I have been saying for a long time- over 20 years in fact- that the likes of Redcliffe, Wynnum and Easts should become part of the NRL one day. Traditional clubs in NSW and Qld are the foundations upon which we can build the NRL and turn it into a thriving national contest. Culling/ merging teams just alienates one group of supporters to try and woo another. It's not worth alienating lifelong, generational fanbases to try and woo bandwagon jumpers who'll only support with their attention and wallets as long as the good times last).

Its only a few misguided folk here who think cutting any current established clubs in the NRL, especially the sydney based ones, are going to somehow improve the competition, its dumb statements like that, that should ban anyone who visits these expansion threads...
I'm totally for adding more teams all around australia and the pacific, but if you take any away all you do is decrease the quality of the competition, take away manly and you lose those fans and sponsors, leave a large northern area that is already sparse due to the bears being gone from 1st grade, take away souths, they already walked the streets, lose one of the largest fan bases in Australia, take away Penrith, Cronulla or Bulldogs and there dries up the current talent pool most teams raid, etc. then there's itll be alright in 20 years the left over teams will eat up that area and its fanbase, nope doesn't work that way and what are we watching in the meantime?, in this 20 year span of new expansion teams taking their spot playing like a busted adding more of likes of the titans and warriors, but in just in Adelaide and Perth.
Dots on a map is great if they are competitive...
We must only ADD to the competition,

Melbourne Storm are winners, they have bugger all juniors... but people forget they cover an area of 5 million people, if AFL didnt exist, they'd be another 8 nrl clubs there too... for those who shit on Melbourne storm for their lack of juniors or effort in their community etc, fk all that, NRL wins in VIC, purely coz they exist.
I want Perth, I want Nz2, I want PNG, maybe even Adelaide, but not at the cost of the current (soon to be) 17 clubs

Fair enough MugaB. I wouldn’t worry about what people say on these threads as the idea of rationalisation is not going happen unless something drastic happens.

By putting club grants up to $15mill there should be no reason clubs need to be cut, decide to relocate or go bust. You'd have to be pretty bad at your jobs to not be ok with a grant that size! NRL just needs to stop using it as an excuse not to invest and grow the game and stop listening to the self interest of the clubs and state bodies.
