This is why I find this forum so amusing at times

the fact that people are trying to argue that a second nz side will have zero value to a broadcaster is hilarious

people come up with better fiction that George r Martin I swear

Of course it adds value. But that doesn’t necessarily equate to bidders being willing to pay more than Sky currently pay.

Which is why most sport subs now on sky are on the app, streaming rather than by satellite. It won't be too many years before the satellite side of sky is gone.
100% agree there, satellite and cable are dying as dedicated platforms as it can all be IP based now

But who is going to take it off them? If there isn’t competition that could potentially take it off them why would they need to blink.

Essentially all cards are in their favour and they would have to be extremely poor negotiators to concede or lose out. It could happen (for all we know they might be really bad negotiators at Sky) but I don’t see that as very likely
All They have to tell is tell Vlandys they’re worried about catching a cold and they’ll get them for half the price!

Yeh fox sports had a fixed contract with the nrl

they then varied it by 20 million pa because vlandys offered them something of value

did they have to do that ?
haha yeh course they did!

Skynz increas wass because of spark, that’s the only reason .it isnt double. It’s $12mill more than the $20mill they’ve been paying for the last decade. and we don’t know how much of that extra is actually cash.

50% of pay TV revenue comes from ads. That's why TV chases high rated content
nonsense. I’m watching dolphins on kayo and just spent 10mins looking at a blank screen saying on ad break back shortly lol. Kayo isn’t even screening all the fox ad breaks. 75% of the ads I have seen are for their own programming Not commercial products.

For the kiwis on here who don’t watch much rugby league the nrl won’t want to stick with a bye for long

the only options are nz2 and Perth

the Perth bid has a lot of problems with it

it’s not essential either for sky nz to pay for the bid

the nrl turns over 640 million pa

fitteen million extra revenue pa is basically a rounding error

if the nrl wanted to they could fund a second nz side tomorrow from the profits they make and they would still have a 9th game to sell to anyone that wants to buy it probably worth 50 million pa

it basically comes down to which area offers more for the nrl

the 18th team is inevitable

getting zero extra money from sky nz won’t stop nz2 if the nrl feels the area offers more than Perth

Guess they'll show world series curling insteax

Strawman alert.

Or they could play all the other sports that they have. They control sport broadcasting over there

In all likelihood NRL will take what they can get from NZ and in any case the next team most likely wouldn’t be picked because of Sky (why would they?) It’s insignificant in the whole scheme of things (you can do the maths if you want) They are more than likely going to be picked because either a) the Australian broadcasters see value in it or b) they think the long term view and say we’ll take the hit financially because we see the potential for player development over there.

If they get picked, I’ll be very happy - at least it’s not another team from NSW or even Qld. But at least be realistic about why they would be likely chosen.

The NRL has next to nothing to do with the decision. Aussie pay tv will decide where the next team is going to be.

The clubs will want the most money they can get and not turn off the pipeline of the odd NZ Junior.

Perth will be the next team.

Exactly. You finally got it. The league can fund any reasonably big area/location in NZ or Australia if they wanted.

In reality team 18 decision will be based on

1. who they think is most financially sustainable
2. which meets nrl strategic plan most(haha)
3. what Australian tv wants
4. what the existing clubs are most likely to agree to

thats how it will be decided. Perth or nz2, the good thing is we will be finally getting real expansion.

If pay TV wants Perth team then they have to fund it. We know they wanted brisbane2, but nothing has been said about perth

I’d add
5. What (if any) additional international broadcasting revenue a bid can attract

But as the debate here has illustrated that may not be a significant amount.

The thing nz2 offers is stronger international rl

so future world cups and test matches are worth more

it’s not just short term but longer term league wins

afl can’t do international expansion but the nrl can
