Nah don’t want to spoil the thread with too much afl talk

You haven’t actually said what’s going to be difficult now

Junior pathways are already in place

They already have a team

The stadium is getting uograded

They are building athletes village

They have tax exemptions

The nrl is controlling how and where the money will be spent not the Aussie govt or the png rl

So what’s the hard bit going to be going forward to getting the team starred

I follow the png bid closely it’s good to have actual facts on hand rather than just feelings and bias
One of the biggest issue is money and player recruitment.

How do they survive when the government tap turns off. And how do they recruit NRL quality players for whom the tax exemption isn't a draw.

They will also not be a big draw for Australian TV or advertisers and will have comparatively little to no revenue from game day attendance or merchandise.

Just remember this conversation when the team is a success

People have a habit here of just doing 180s

I have 100 percent confidence in the team being a huge success

I don’t get the negativity

League has expanded to loads of places where there are only poor while people and 50 years down the track those teams are a success (Penrith or Cronulla)

Is it sour grapes their favourite expansion team didn’t get in ? Or just png isn’t cool like Tasmania is lol
comparing penrith and cronulla to PNG lol

Wait tilll Anzac game next year in that stadium the talk will ramp up

And discussions will be held shortly about the nz tv rights with sky or dazn

If they are providing more money for a second team then that will push their start date up
A big question mark is Government funding with regards to NZ 2.

The NRL have been firm on expecting some kind of Government funding/investment as part of Perth & PNG's entry - and they've managed to negotiate terms acceptable to the NRL & the Government(s) involved.

It's not a crazy assumption they'll look for something from Governments (local and/or central) here in NZ as part of the deal.. BUT we're in austerity at the moment - local Governments are grappling with decades of under-investment in infrastructure (chiefly water pipes), and central Government is the driest administration since the double whammy of Rogernomics & Ruthenasia in the mid-80s to mid-90s.

While there are local government elections this year, the big show is the General Election that's due next year... if Labour/Greens/Maori Party succeed in making the current lot a one-term Government, that could well open a door to some spending towards NZ 2.

Thing is, a one term Government hasn't happened here since 1972-5, and it's NEVER happened to a National-led Government.

They’ve built two new stadiums they don’t need to spend a cent more

Ahh, but that's for the NRL to determine.. not you or I.

Who are we to say that stadium (which wasn't built specifically for an NRL team) is "enough"?
Nrl doesn’t just ask for govt money for the sake of it

Its either for stadium, juniors, a centre of excellence or to pay a license fee

The coe has been mentioned previously as covered by chch govt by the orcas or maybe it was the orcas themselves

Junior funding has also been mentioned to be covered by orcas

Plus nz unlike Perth or dolphins has its own tv deal

Each bid has to be looked at its own merits

Png needed so much govt money to make up for its other shortfalls

Perth also in a smaller way

Dolphins needed zero govt support

At the least you'd expect them to want a kick back to clubs, a CofE building and some funding to Jnrs. Be it from NZ Govt or from a private owner bid.

Dolphins had a CofE and got lucky re the club kick back demand and significant increased jnr funding or else they probably wouldn't have got in.

Sure it could come from the bid themselves

That’s my point

The govt doing those two stadia is already the heavy lifting part

I genuinely believe when nrl games are being played there it will ramp up nz2

I can’t remember the exact figure … but didn’t the NRL also get around $20m a year for 5 years from Fox to bring in the Dolphins ? Not a bad incentive

Dunedin having a stadium built 15 years ago, is the "heavy lifting" for an NRL team.

Only on LU

Let’s all be honest …NZ2 will have plenty of time to get their act together …Team 20 most likely won’t be happening until the TV deal after the next … so 2033 at the earliest … the NRL have two difficult projects that they are taking on at the same which will keep their hands full in the medium term…
Do you think 2033 is too late.
