AFL chair Richard Goyder has rejected speculation from some league pundits that the code had been lobbying against the franchise with the WA Government to try and block its expansion.
“Zero chance,” the prominent WA company director told The West Australian on Thursday following an announcement by State Government and ruby league chiefs.
“It’s not what we do. We’ve probably got more in common than not in some cases. We all want good facilities and good processes to encourage young people to play sport.”
The AFL has no fears about rugby league’s expansion into its WA heartland, saying the NRL Perth team will enhance sport in the State and boost its economy.
“I think it’s good, good for WA,” said Mr Goyder.

“There’s enough people in WA now to support it, as long as the NRL does it well, the team is strong and it’s supported, it will be great,” Mr Goyder said.
WA will provide $60 million in direct assistance over seven years to relocate the North Sydney Bears to WA as the Perth Bears, with $35 million set aside to promote grassroots rugby league.
Also included in the deal is $5.6 million match day support and marketing through Tourism WA to encourage east coast League fans to travel west to watch games in Perth.
Mr Goyder, a former chairman of Qantas, said there were a lot of rugby league and union followers who had moved to WA who would support the new franchise, with east coast fans likely to use the occasion of their team playing the Bears in Perth to take a holiday in the State.
“It will be good for airlines and hotels,” he said.
