We need some sort of pinned post explaining that a club which has four starting spine players all signed to at least 2027, cumulatively making comfortably more than $3.5 million, is not very likely to sign another proven NRL starter in any of those positions.

Unless something drastically unexpected happens, Ponga, Sharpe, Brown, Crossland is the starting spine next year.

Haha yeah no, I know... it was a rhetorical question intended to aggitate everyone that's been explaining to me lately why we're getting rid of players, as if I don't already know.

I just love watching how other clubs operate versus our own is all. For some reason we accept a cleanout with no clear or able replacements lined up. We accept it based on some vague promise of spending the money properly in some unknowable future timeline. Other clubs just don't really do this. They usually know who is taking the money when they start tapping blokes on the back. It's good business to know that sort of stuff, imo. If you don't, you're just setting yourself up for the next panic buy. You're also destablizing the playing group/roster with zero certainty on a fix.

Given that we can't even seem to get guys that aren't playing first grade to the club at the moment, perhaps it's a moot point. I'm still waiting for our gun recruiter to prove himself. Not spending money at all (except on a huge vanity signing) and missing out on a large and growing list of targets seems to be enough to impress us thus far. I'm not impressed yet, but I'm eagerly waiting.

I guess it depends on how responsible you think the new recruitment guy should be for the club being a completely unattractive option for potential signings. I’m sure POS is in negotiations trying his hardest to sell us to new recruits, but most players have brains. They’re not going to sign for a club that has zero success and has the coach being sacked in the headlines 24/7 when they have options to go to Melbourne or the Dogs. If you’re expecting POS to somehow sell us as the better option for them that’s completely unrealistic.

Would you prefer us to just target players that either nobody else wants or only the other shit teams want just so we spend cap money? Because we’ve done that for years and it hasn’t worked out for us has it? At this point if someone wants to try something different I’m happy to give him the benefit of the doubt before writing him off as another failure.

No idea. Not only do I not have the full list of off contract players (both NRL and Cup), nor do I watch as much footy as I used to, but it's also not my full time job to scout them, price them and recruit them.

I can't do a better job on the field than our players either, but it doesn't mean I can't make a judgement on their performances.

What I can do is observe how other, more successful clubs run their shows. What I continually find is that we like to march to the beat of our own half-tempo drum. Hasn't been working well for us.

I actually rather his slow approach, it means we are not over paying or making panic signings, which is something that has killed us for the last decade. Missed out on some good targets but it’s obvious why they didn’t come here considering the options they had.

This is such a frustrating half baked argument.

Why aren't we recruiting like a successful club? Because we are not a successful club. We are not a desirable destination. That can't at all be hard to understand?

You have to choose between here and the Bulldogs or Storm. A team who is trying to rebuild vs premiership contenders. When we're competing directly against these clubs for players we're either going to miss out or over pay.

You want us to run like successful clubs, but then you give it to POS for utilising the same recruitment blueprint that the successful clubs use (going for good players with actual talent and not just throwing anyone a contract). If we were happy to just overpay everyone out of desperation like we have in the past he would have had multiple players recruited by now. That’s not been working for us though.

What we’re doing now is targeting players that have talent. I know they have talent because of the other clubs that are chasing them. The only downside to that is we’re competing against clubs that can offer players a much better destination than we are the moment. I’d still prefer us to take our time looking for the right targets, ones with genuine talent that the top teams also want, than just throw money at anyone like we have in the past that hasn’t worked.

I have no idea how POS will work out, but the guy is trying to do something different to the same crap we’ve been doing for years that hasn’t worked. I’m choosing to be supportive of that and give him the benefit of the doubt before reverting to the standard Knights negativity.

Also we are still trying to recruit local Caucasian lads instead of tapping into the Islander market. I wish we would target England more at least.
