AFL grew 9% in QLD participation rates last year. And AFL has been growing at 10-12% in the ACT too.

I'm glad Norths Bears are doing well again, but it's 33% more players for them because now with a viable club in the area locals can play for them, not 33% new players to the code or in the comp. It's just a demographics shift in Canberra's inner North -there's a heap of medium density apartments gone into what used to be just yuppies and retirees- there's probably10 000 more people in the area now and mostly in the young families age. Conversely the "nappy valley" boom of kids in Tuggeranong has slowed.

I taught PE in Canberra for several years, until fairly recently so I see exactly who is playing what over time and what sports are or are not doing in schools and school holiday clinics etc.
I’m glad you have such great access to afl propaganda and use it so effectively. Each league club based in Canberra experienced growth this year. Tuggeranong had a small increase but didn’t shrink. You said competitions had shrunk. You are wrong. I only pointed to north Canberra because their increase was the highest by the way. So that sort of negates your point doesn’t it?

Titans need to just sort out the pathways

Palm beach Currumbin and keebra park high were in the top 3 schools in Australia
They have.

There’s a very good development program in place which encompasses most of the junior regional clubs and schools into a streamlined pathways system.

This stretches from northern Gold Coast to southern parts of the Northern Rivers.

It’s only about half a decade or so old. One of Ezra Howes innovations and something he has been working diligently on setting up. You won’t see true results of this program for a few years yet, I’d imagine.

Keebra do their own thing. They were part of this program and now they’re not. That school for all its amazing rugby league nous and development is very much money orientated.

And stop charging 100 buck tickets for the stand facing the camera

Their top 30 is messed up.

They've got some absolutely gun forwards but have the worst spine in the comp. They remind me of Brisbane around 2019 who had the exact same problem.

Just need to pick them in first grade and stick with them if they are good

Love seeing when nrl clubs have a good whack of local kids doing well for the club in fg

Dunno mate, I have mates who live on the GC and their kids play and follow AFL now simply because AFL does a way better job of getting into schools, giving out free gear, free clinic programs etc. League sits on it's hands.

It's the same in Canberra. AFL playing numbers are growing and league is shrinking.
Yeah, have you watched the Titans lately? GC is far from anything but a RL city, you only have to scratch below the surface to see that.

Canberra, I don't know, I don't live there but the Raiders are flying and AFL has always had a presence in the nations capital because of migration. It became a RL city because of the Raiders

AFL participation numbers have been shown to be rubbery at best

Participation in Rugby league on the Gold Coast has been growing year on year and the statistics show it. Team numbers are well up again this year.
And there has been a 10% growth in team numbers in the Canberra district rugby league. As an example North Canberra junior Bears had a 33% increase in teams this year. Their seniors grew as well.
I know these things because I count them. But continue with the doom and gloom old boy.

Thanks for chiming in with the facts mate.

But, but, but old mate knows a kid that plays AFL - lol

I'm sure NRL's are too.

But what I see over years in schools and other teachers I speak to shows AFL much bigger presence than it used to be, so I don't doubt the trend.
Ok mate, let's assume those AFL figures are true (lol). 9% sounds impressive but from a small base, it's not that impressive in real numbers.

You are falling for the old AFL propaganda trap. Something like 40,000 Victorians have moved to SEQ since the Vic border opened up after COVID. You aren't converting locals in any sort of impressive numbers, you are just importing cult members. One or two generations on and their kids will just fall in line with the dominant sporting culture. I know because I'm the son of Victorians who moved here. My dad even played at State League level for Southport Sharks (back then they were Southport Magpies). I couldn't have given less of a shit. Because Rugby League was the thing. My friends, on TV, the dominant sport in the media.

Now, AFL propaganda will have you believe that this is a generational play and that by the time these kids have grown up AFL would have taken over and become the dominant sporting culture, but it hasn't played out that way. In their arrogance, they added additional teams in Sydney and SEQ and it's actually hurt the product and canabalised the existing teams. Lions and Swans crowds are down, GWS and Suns remain a black hole with ordinary crowds despite the AFL rigging the comp to bring them success on the ladder. And the latest TV ratings are dire.

You can't just throw millions and millions of dollars at something and buy hearts and minds. It comes from culture and connection and history. Something the AFL suits in Melbourne underestimated.

Very much a case of their NRL roster not being a true reflection of the good work being done behind the scenes.

Shades of Panthers around 2011/12 when the current elite pathways was being set up. Doubt Titans will emulate that but they’re giving it a red hot crack.

Can they drop the ego and sign DCE?

Absolute rubbish. As someone who has worked in 100s of schools in both Sydney and Brisbane I can assure you the AFL has completely lost the next generation of kids in both cities. All they talk about is NRL. It's everywhere and the gap is only going to get bigger.

This is the best position we have ever been in.

Actually the NRL’s aren’t because they are based on club participation and you can actually count them. I bother to do it. So lets go back to your point that rugby league is shrinking in the Canberra district. You are wrong and the data shows it. And as for your comments about the Gold Coast. A mate told you? Gee that’s solid. But continue on yapping about AFL. You seem to know an awful lot about it.

So they are playing afl at junior levels in record numbers but nobody is watching them on tv and their crowds are stagnant and the senior club is a financial basket case
This bloke smells like an afl troll mate. He’s been proven to be wrong but keeps banging on with his little stories. Stats and facts are much more reliable than ‘somebody told me’ I’m afraid.

But you guys just throw out any fact or stat you don't like...

Yeah I carefully curated an account for years and a thousand posts just so I could finally launch a secret AFL troll mission. I can't believe you saw through it! Truly a dizzying intellect.

Anyway you're getting a little bit worked up about it so I'll just leave you be so you don't have to keep seething all day.
