‘it’s not just the clean out that has us in our position .

i feel this is the first time forever (and that may even include the Smith years to a degree) that it feels like we have an actual plan in how we are playing , what players we are looking too recruit , juniors that we are bringing through - the complete package with real coaching thrown in.

i felt like the BA tenure he had no real idea of what players he wanted , more about grabbing who was available and who we could get
No. Smith played to the change in the rules. Remember the run from dummy half where we just made metres and metres. Smith had gameplans for each team as well.

2009 we had a style too.

BA had a plan too. Chase collision, effort, completion, 1 outs and kick to corners

Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield’s highlights and lowlight: Phil Gould twists salary cap committee facts

For someone who constantly bags the way the NRL runs the game, why did Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould refuse to contribute to real change to an issue which must be fixed?
Phil Rothfield

Phil Gould has developed a reputation for standing on his soapbox saying he knows all the answers - but then refusing to contribute to real change.
And his comments regarding his withdrawal from a salary cap committee only support that.
Gould said on Channel Nine last week that he refused to be part of the committee, which also includes club CEOs Blake Solly and Dave Donaghy, Dragons chair Andrew Lancaster, Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon and player manager David Riolo, because the scope of the committee was not broad enough.
“The reason why I pulled out of that committee was because the scope of the investigation was not extensive enough,” Gould said.
“I said there was nothing I could contribute unless they wanted to go back and blow it up and start again, which they’re not prepared to do obviously.

“All these other things are just cosmetic changes and aren’t going to make a great deal of difference to salary cap management.”
These comments are actually a load of crap. Typical Gus twisting the facts.
The truth is the scope for the committee was about as broad as it gets.
The original email to the committee, which initially included Gould, stated the group would “review all aspects of Salary Cap including third party contracts, allowances and exemptions”.
For someone who bags the way the game is run so much, Gus talks so much rubbish.

HIGHLIGHT

The Titans’ victory over the Warriors in New Zealand to celebrate Dessie Hasler’s 500th game. Sadly it won’t be enough to save his job.

LOWLIGHT

The Cronulla Sharks attack against the Rabbitohs in Gosford. They won by just two points despite a having massive advantage in the penalties, six-again restarts and territory against a side decimated with injuries.

SHOOSH

Daly Cherry-Evans will turn out for Manly against his new club the Sydney Roosters next weekend. His signing at the Bondi Junction club will be formally announced as soon as both Manly and the Roosters are finished for the year, sometime in September. DCE’s management and the Roosters have an agreement to say nothing until then.

SHOOSH II

We’re hearing Wallabies superstar Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is no certainty to stay at the Waratahs next year and that he could be headed to a rival Super Rugby franchise. We tried to check in with his twice-deregistered agent Isaac Moses, who declined to return our calls.

SHOOSH III

Former Australian schoolboys and Queensland Under-19s halfback Tom Duffy is heading to the Brisbane Broncos as a back-up for veteran Adam Reynolds. The 22-year-old has played five games for the North Queensland Cowboys but is on the outer with coach Todd Payten and has not been offered a deal for next season. Duffy had offers from the UK Super League but wants to back himself in the NRL as a long-term replacement for Reynolds in Brisbane.

SPOTTED

Jake Duke has done an outstanding two-part interview with superstar Greg Inglis which raises great awareness around mental health that airs on Fox League’s Face-to-Face on Tuesday night. It is an extraordinary insight into his life, recreational drugs, rehab and his darkest moments.

All three plans got us into grand finals and no further. You can’t help bad luck.

I noticed whenever the NRL set up a committee from club land for anything to review or possibly change rules

We never get a start at the table.

The Dragons even got there chairman in.

In terms of Gus pulling out.

I think the NRL knew that from that get go.

Gus has never been apart of these game wide reviews.

Which I reckon is on purpose as it gives him free reign to bash the game whenever he wants to suit his agenda so he can claim he wasn't responsible.

Gus would have been like the smug prick at the table keeping his mouth shut and letting the other fools talk thinking he was too clever for the other blokes and that unless he is in fully in charge or control he cant deal with it.

^^^ Well there was a time when Dennis Fitzgerald headed a body which represented all franchise CEOs. He said in a presser once (IIRC seeking a sympathetic ear when it came to pokie tax) that he didn’t know if the Eels would be around in 5 years - because of the precarious financial position that all clubs were in at the time.

Boy, didn’t everyone use that as damning statement of fact in these pages for years and years after. It was an absolute pile on. It was like parliament question time at it’s very worst where reason and logic went out the window and “LOL, he said it” was the go-to response. That was the nail in his coffin to get rid of him.

Didn’t we have some fun years after that….2008.

He was partially right, as clubs at the time weren’t receiving the huge NRL grants generated by today’s broadcasting deals. What funding they did receive wasn’t enough to keep pace with the rapid rise in player salaries. That’s why he argued that no player should be earning more than $400k.

Don't forget 2010-2016.

The context is club representation in NRL advocacy body or change agency.

So what's your point about 2010-16 ?
It was a continuation of your point about 2008. High level decisions have long ranging consequences. Penrith won their first premiership of their recent run nine years after bringing Gould on board, but he was absolutely the catalyst. Likewise our instability around 2006 set us up for a decade of failure, the dead cat bounce of 2009 notwithstanding.

We won heaps of games during his tenure. It was awesome.

I feel like we where the Manly/Sharks during BAs period. We never felt a genuine title threat. Just kinda make finals and bow out easily.
2022 we copped some wild thrashings and late in the season also. By memory we had the 8th best points differential and if im being honest id say the Cowboys dominated that semi final game and where the better side. We held tough and got a bit lucky.
2017 I felt was our best chance. A poor ref's call cost us an away win at Melbourne in the first final. We had the x factor to win it.

The Dogs and Canberra on the flip side both look genuine chances. Tbf but Penrith are in a semi rebuild and Storm haven't fired yet.
Its a weak comp.

There is absolutely nothing about this that you should feel guilty for. On the contrary, you have given great service to the rugby league community.
