Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

Looks like they’ll target anybody to fill the teams. They face several hurdles:

1. Getting an audience to watch a boring spectacle;
2. Finding enough players to fill the squads; and
3. Finding enough players of any reasonable standard and understanding of the rules of rugby to fill the squads (a bigger problem than 2 above).
The only way anybody will bother to watch a competition like this is if it is of premium standard and is exciting. This comp will be neither unless they make significant rule changes. Thats going to alienate the core rugby base who love scrums lineouts mauls and rucks.
And given the players will basically have no international profile how will you attract the casual observer?

Bring it on!

Good for him. He should take it!
There's no guarantee of a starting spot in the NRL for him and he may never see an opportunity like this again.

There's no guarantee that r360 willl get off the ground or survive as a competition. Setting up franchises, buying players at top dollar and traveling the world like Formula 1, does indicate an expensive competition to run.

Even if r360 gets a tv deal and private investors, they all want a ROI. Also having a breakaway comp in the same year as the RWC, does represent a massive risk.

So Jye Gray possibly has a choice. Go to a breakaway comp with so many question marks and perhaps red flags attached to it, or stay in a competition that has been around since 1908?

As much as I love watching Gray, we know he's one injury or bad performance away from permanent reserve grade, if not a roster squeeze..then it's reserve grade or 150k in the SL..
He's one of the very few that I'd recommend taking a chance on that big pay packet. This is his million dollar ticket-take it.

Nah he’s good

Souths should bite the bullet and make him fullback and move trell to centre or even six and punt Cody Walker

Latrell could be a very good six

There's been plenty like him. He's at peak performance- anything less than that and it's coming will see him drop like a stone.

Starting a comp from nothing is extremely difficult …no one is invested in plastic teams that have been around for 5 minutes playing against each other ….

Of course , history also shows us that sports people will jump ship for multiples of money, so whilst it may not succeed, they could disrupt our competition. You would be a bit daft to be laughing it off if this is really a serious bid to get a competition running with Middle Eastern money..

I do laugh at some of the Union types though that think it’s just going to be a problem for the NRL and not Australian Rugby

More often than not, it is difficult to judge a player and what kind of career they will have after just 28 games. So Gray going to r360 would be premature. Although it could be the right decision for him in the end.

Another consideration is the personal circumstances of a player. If a player is single, with no kids, then why not. I don't know Grays personal life, but if he is not attached, then maybe go for it.

However players with partners and kids under the age of five, it may not be ideal. The way r360 is set up by traveling the world, it may not suit everyone.

I think someone like Gray might be ripe for the picking …he has been offered three times probably what he is on playing RL …and I would suggest he won’t reach the top in our game …he is still young enough to make some money and return to the NRL if it falls over ..

also shows that they are casting the nets pretty wide …

Yeah I think if it actually gets big money backing from the Middle East it could be a decent threat. Not like it’ll kill the game or anything but I do think some here are significantly under playing it.

With the sorts of numbers they’re throwing around though it boggles the mind how this thing could keep going without some serious investment and willingness to burn cash. Then again we have seen this in other sports.

Hard to know what to think until the competition actually materialises as something more than ashes and dust.

I'd say NRL player agents would go to r360 and talk up their player.

There's lots of comparison to other sports doing the same thing as r360 but seems a ridiculous stretch at best! LIV golf, a sport that has always travelled and done events that relies on sole entities.. F1 ,again, always events relying on sole entities. These sports aren't built on tribalism the same way team sports are!
We're talking groups of 30 including coaching staff, flights, accommodation , stadium hire and of course these incredible pay packets they're proposing.
That's unbelievably expensive!!!

You'd need to be selling tickets for $100 and selling out stadiums of 50k every game ...
To watch what?
I'm struggling to see a scenario where it isn't the hardest flop in sporting history.

it might be … it won’t matter though if the players have already moved over from the NRL in the meantime
