Rabbitohs knew about Brandon Smith’s gambling problem when they signed him

All up, Smith borrowed thousands of dollars from a number of Roosters players. He also borrowed $10,000 from one of the game’s biggest stars, and owed the player that money for years. It was finally paid back to the player – who confirmed to this column during the week that he got the money – at the Roosters’ insistence.

The star, who did not play for the Roosters, was not aware of the Bondi club’s part in making sure Smith cleared his debt. It was only when I told him that he learnt why he had eventually been paid back.

This column has previously approached Smith to discuss his problems, but he has declined to talk. I approached him again this week, but he has not responded.

I held back from reporting the matter for a long time because Smith was still receiving counselling. But given the police interest in him, the circumstances have changed.

Smith was issued a bench warrant on August 20 to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on September 18, at which point he will be charged with one count of disclosing “inside knowledge” for illegal betting and one count of supplying dangerous drugs.

Smith is an intelligent and interesting individual who is loved by his close mates. There is little love for him from the Roosters.

How can a professional sports team sign any player with a known gambling problem?

It's only a matter of time before they take a loan from the wrong people and it becomes an issue on the field

A player allegedly giving betting info being not a big deal to LU, suggests how many degenerate gamblers there is within society and this community.
My you really are a superior being. We can look on and be inspired by your higher moral status which we can but aspire to.

Very unsurprising when you consider how many teams still deal with players managed by Isaac Moses.

bit hard not to as we've been watching gambling adds on the televised NRL games since we were rug rats, its ingrained into our culture, unfortunately

He allegedly told someone he was starting instead of being on the bench. The article says there is no suggestion he encouraged them to gamble.

Out of interest who is he allowed to tell this information to in your opinion? Like are players allowed to tell their family this type of stuff or are they not permitted to talk about work?

I think it's more that the allegations (at least as reported) around that are pretty lame.

He's clearly a degenerate gambler though based on more recent info and it wouldn't surprise me if that ends his career. Maybe not now, but there's gonna be a big black line drawn through his name when he eventually comes off contract

Again, the Easts mob are so concerned about drugging and gambling. That’s awesome.

What did the Roosters know?
When did they know it?
Who did they notify? - ie integrity unit.

and if they knew before Souths signed him, hmmmm.
And a hearty lol at Souths for signing him too.

I think you're overstating the amount of posters on this site that gamble. Sure, there are a few who go crazy with the anytime scorer multis, which I think are silly bets. But I bet if we did a poll, that less than 25% believe they have a gambling problem on this site. What odds would you give me on that, just out of curiosity?

If the Roosters said anything, Souths would interpret it as an an attempt to stop him being signed. South Sydney - forver with a chip on its shoulder.

Its not the Roosters job to do due diligence for the Rabbitohs recruitment staff.,

I meant more that this seems to be an ongoing issue that the Roosters knew about. Surely being the moral crusaders of the game, they’re dobbing him for their own good, for his own good, for the game’s good? You would hope they’re not trickling shit to journos to bring the game in to disrepute? As moral arbiters and carers of young men.
And yep. Suck shit Souths for signing him anyway.

Smith joins Tandy as further reasons not to buy players coming out of Melbourne Storm.
